Yay! Sophie Baek is finally here and with all of excitement of this casting, I think it’s also important to bring attention to the new intersectionality that comes with the character of Sophie (specifically show Sophie).

Why should you take my words into account? Well, as an Asian woman in society today, I feel that I am qualified to speak on this topic since I’ve experienced all of this.

All of my words come from kind intentions, and I purely just want to communicate to the fandom how to approach Sophie being Asian in a respectful way.

Asia is a gigantic continent filled with various countries that have a multitude of cultures and ethnicities. While on the surface they all seem similar, they each have their own customs and traditions that have meaning within our culture. Do not combine them.

It’s important to remember that not every Asian person is Chinese, Japanese or Korean (East asian).

With Sophie being Korean, please do not generalize when writing about what you think you know about Korean culture.

You like Kpop and Kdrama? Great! BUT that does not define what Korean culture is and you shouldn't use that content as a reference.

When writing, be aware of explicit and unconscious biases you have about Asian people.

Asian stereotypes (Model Minority, Dragon Lady, Lotus blossom, etc) are very harmful and spread false narratives about us. Stereotypes eliminate the dimensions of who we are as Asians (South, South East, East, North, West).

Please, please, please do not fetishize. Especially since Bridgerton is a romance series it's extremely important to be mindful of the scenarios you put in your fics.

This also includes the White Savior Complex we see a lot in media!

If you’re writing about something specific, research it and fully understand the content you are putting into your work. Feel a little iffy about if you should put it in your fic? Probably don’t then. It’s that easy!

It's always great to ask someone who is a part of the community as well to see if what you're writing about is appropriate or potentially offensive in any way.

Describing Sophie is something new as well. Be mindful on how you describe her and other Asian characters.

Let me be clear: descriptions like 'slanted eyes' or 'yellow skin' are harmful

To wrap this up, I want to be clear that I’m not a professional on this topic, but as someone who has been affected by harmful portrayals in media, I feel compelled to share my perspective. My hope is to spread awareness and encourage others to be mindful of how they approach these subjects, especially if they may not be fully informed. It’s about showing respect, doing the necessary research, and recognizing the impact our words and content can have on real people and cultures. By staying educated and considerate, we can be more aware and thoughtful in our actions.

There are so many influences nowadays, whether that be social media specifically or your own social circle, that almost demand people have life figured out right after they graduate high school or University- that if you don’t have the dream job or major aspirations by your early twenties or even before you’re somehow already failing at life and unable to catch up- when that’s NOT. THE. CASE. AT. ALL. There’s no linear timeline to how life works and there’s no linear timeline for goals or aspirations either. Plans change, people change, circumstances change, all of the above can flip on a dime without notice, and that’s okay! There’s no rule book or all mighty guide that shares how you live life and ‘figure it out’ to a T, because everyone’s lives are different and directed towards whatever path they choose to direct it to. It’s okay to have plans and hopes and dreams, and it’s okay also to NOT have any of those things and to just simply exist in the life you’ve been given if you’re content to.

There’s no timeline for personal achievement or age limit for personal achievement, either.

The controversy surrounding the Reylo kiss in TROS is interesting because, in a way, both people who think it came out of nowhere and people who think it made complete sense within the characters narratives are kinda right.

The kiss makes sense when you consider their dynamic in TLJ, how Rey was willing to save Ben, how Ben went against his own master to save Rey, how he wanted her by his side and how despite of their different philosophies they still wanted to engage with one another because they understood each other on a deep level.

But the thing is, TROS goes above and beyond to try and make the audience forget TLJ ever happened. Which meant the movie going back on Rey's character growth and her connection with Kylo that was the starting point of her development in the previous movie. TROS already shoots itself in the foot by sidelining Ben, the most interesting and layered character of the ST, and then it gets worse by having Rey no longer be a character with conflicting feelings towards him. Most of the time their dynamic just looks like a typical hero x villain enmity where she views him as a regular bad guy that keeps getting in her way and that must be defeated.

So of course when the kiss happens, a lot of people including some reylos themselves, feel a bit confused and underwhelmed. Because if TROS had picked up where TLJ left off, the kiss would've been a natural step for their relationship. But no. TROS just ignores everything that happened in TLJ, regress Ben and Rey's dynamic to the hostility of TFA almost as if Rey had her memory of everything she'd been through with Ben in the previous movie wiped out, and then, in the end, have them kiss because they're aware Reylo is the most popular SW ship and they'll try very hard to appease everyone at once, antis and shippers alike. The kiss felt underwhelming even to some reylos because there was no build up in this movie, because most of the time the movie refuses to portray Ben and Rey as characters with romantic feelings for each other in fear of twitter "activists" yelling at them for unapologetically developing a romance between the villain and the heroine. It's good that the kiss happened because it validates Reylo as a romantic pairing in canon, but the circumstances in which it happened, just like everything else in this movie, are very disappointing.

In case no one told you growing up

Bras last longer if you let them air dry. Don’t put them in the dryer.

If you have a problem with frizzy hair, don’t dry your hair with a towel. It makes the frizzies worse. (I recently read an article that said to use a t-shirt? I brush mine out and let it air dry.)

Whites wash best in hot water. Everything else can be in cold - save on your electricity bill.

You can kill 99.9% of germs in a sponge by putting it in the dishwasher for a cycle or by microwaving it for 2 min (be sure to make the sponge damp before microwaving and to put a cup half full of water in with it and please DO NOT squeeze the sponge until it has cooled off)

Airing out your room/house and letting sunlight in every so often can decrease the number of household pests like silverfish and ants.

Black underwear is best during your period as stains are less likely to be visible.

To save money, put aside 10% of each paycheck into a savings account. It’ll add up.

Unless your hair has something on/in it (like grease or mud or something), using conditioner first can actually be the better choice. The conditioner holds in the good oils that help you hair look sleek and beautiful, which shampoo would otherwise wash away.

Speaking of shampoo - if you have long hair, washing just the bits that touch your scalp is generally enough. The rest of your hair gets cleaned with just the run off from your scalp.

If you put a tampon in and it’s uncomfortable/you can feel it, you didn’t do it quite right. A properly placed tampon is virtually unnoticeable by the wearer.

Apply deodorant/antiperspirant a couple hours in advance of when you need it. This gives the product the chance to block your sweat glands. Using deodorant just before going somewhere where you’ll sweat (this means walking outside for people in high humidity places) results in your sweat washing the deodorant off and starkly limiting its usefulness.

After running the dryer, use the dryer sheet from that load to brush out the lint catch - it gets everything off in a fraction of the time it’ll take you to get it clean with your bare hands. Paper towels also work well.

Wash your face everyday, or as often as possible. Forget which brand of cleanser is best. Just washing your face everyday will guarantee you clearer skin. And do you best not to pop pimples, as tempting as the urge may be.

Fold laundry asap after taking it from the dryer to avoid wrinkles. This may seem obvious for dress shirts and silly for things like t-shirts, but you’ll notice the difference even then once your shirts stop looking like unfolded paper balls.
