It seems like the roses are the most common project for welders so I wanted to give it a try. The rose on the left was made petal by petal. They were shaped with a hammer on an anvil then welded onto the stem.
I brazed cut outs onto the stem and used pliers and an oxy acetylene torch to form the cutouts on the rose to the right. The rose on the right has a rougher look because the constant heating of the petals burned out impurities and caused the surface to become rough. Because they were formed together, I couldn’t get a tool into the flower to clean it out, whereas the petals on the other rose were made individually so they were easy to polish up. Once the flowers were secured the stem, I shaped the stems to hold the flower up. To produce the coiled base, I welded the stem to a small pipe and slowly heated it as I pulled the stem around the pipe.
