Every year after the 4th of July, we take the dogs out to our “secret beach.” Just a little cove on the Chesapeake Bay main stem, very shallow and full of Bay grasses. No one else but the four of us and maybe a kayaker or two. It’s been a wonderful spot to introduce our new collie, Boo, to the wonders of Bay swimming and just let the pups blow off a little summer energy.
When your border collie with almost no body fat thinks she’s a retriever, who is to tell her otherwise?
Collies might not listen, but they always understand you.
That collie stare- I get why it unsettles people. It suggests that the tables are turned, that your dog is observing you, that in some machination of fate, you’ve somehow become the guinea pig. It’s the intense look of a puppet master, pulling the strings of their marionette. Are you making them work for you, or is it the other way around?
We’ve often talked about how that searing gaze is precisely what we love about collies- their focus, their intelligence, their urge to work, their commitment to their owner. It is part of their beauty, and although can certainly be onerous if left undirected, when collie and owner are a team it conjures a wonderful sort of canine magic.
Just before the gale arrived late Saturday, the sun was warm and the fields were golden and we got to hold onto fall before it slipped into winter.

Fall is here, but SOMEBODY couldn’t give a hoot, as long as I throw the frisbee.
Lovely rich October evening light makes our post-workday yard romps especially wonderful. The geese are arriving from Canada— sure signs of fall— and here with the collies, all is well and thankfully, healthy. We had a bit of a scare with our older collie, Roy (the one in the back looking contained, not the adorable little fool with the stick). He’s better now, thanks to some good care and his own sturdy constitution, but it was rough there for a bit. Now I simply am filled with gratitude that I can resume capturing the silly lives of our two little beasts.
It’s a great day to play in the Chesapeake Bay. Have dog, will travel!
Somebody is dead serious about playing.
Collies need jobs, and for our collies, we’ve directed that drive towards play- fetch, chase, walks, runs. They love it and we enjoy it- and as active people, our collies get a lot of time outside with us in the woods and on the water. In my experience, a well-exercised, stimulated collie is a happy one- and one that can be a good pet and companion. A bored collie, a sedentary collie, a collie left mostly to their own devices is a recipe for disaster, neurotic behaviors, and chaos. Collies are beautiful dogs, but they are bred for work- if you own one, you have to be committed to channeling that drive for work into healthy behaviors. And who knows? You might be inspired to get active and have fun outdoors, just like they do!

The weekend stretches, open and inviting. But first, back to bed with coffee and collies.
A hot, sunny hike this weekend at Sassafras had tongues lolling and required a few breathers along the way. The collies would run themselves senseless in this summer heat, so choosing walks that have a few streams or waterfront spots for cool-downs is important. Roy is far too dignified to really wallow, but Ash could spend all day swimming and retrieving sticks.

Sun’s out, tongue’s out!
It is finals week at the college where my husband works, so Ash got to enjoy a “take your collie to work” day as a therapy dog for stressed out undergrads. She absolutely loved it, and any student who approached her got kisses, a furiously wagging tail and a proffered belly for rubs. No doubt, she got more out of the trip than the students! Ash loves attention, and for an hour she was the belle of the college ball- bliss!
