THE BOATMAN -- Do you remember the name of the love of your life?
FIDELIA -- ...What?
THE BOATMAN -- What brought you here?
FIDELIA -- I am not playing your games. Old you may be, but so am I. Stick to chess. It suits you better.
THE BOATMAN -- Do you think you made him up?
FIDELIA -- Then where is he?
THE BOATMAN -- Somewhere even you can not escape out of.
THE BOATMAN (cont.) -- I should ask, though aptly named in your current form, what makes him so different, out of all of your thrown away lovers? Did enemies not slay your sisters? Did a rival not kill your wife? Did your memory grow faulty enough so that you forgot their love, and your vengeance? A curse to make even the Sun cry.
FIDELIA -- ...
THE BOATMAN -- Your body is fodder for sorrow-spiders, as it once was, tens of thousands of years ago. Have you changed? Or have you not? The prison questions you.
FIDELIA -- ...
THE BOATMAN -- Time and time again. Law is law. You will always escape me, but you will never escape your death.
PARASITE OF THE SAPPHIR'D THRONE -- YOU TIRE ME.
GENTLY, THE GOOD NIGHT -- If I had eyes to close, then I would.
PARASITE OF THE SAPPHIR'D THRONE -- I ESCAPED THE CHAIN. I ESCAPED DEATH. I DEFY THE LAW.
GENTLY, THE GOOD NIGHT -- I told you: you escaped one death, but not the other.

(A pause.)

(THE BOATMAN nods, and stretches out a hand to place the oar in FIDELIA'S other hand, and the lantern as well. He stands up, and after a moment, places the hat on FIDELIA'S head. He shuffles to the bank where the waves lap at the sand, and leaves.
FIDELIA is alone.)
