Don’t you ever tame your demons Always keep them on a leash
dennis & erin — JUNE 3rd 2023 [three broomsticks]
hcrbology:
"Fine, fine, maybe ‘creeped out’ was a bit of an exaggeration … —” Erin leaned her head back for a moment before taking a drink, a cheshire smile starting to form on her lips. She was going in for the pun. ” .. — but they were definitely creevey’d out,” Erin’s face went into a large smile as she put her drink down, a giggle bubbling from her throat. That joke never got old, at least to her, and she’d use it against him as long as she could. Maybe it was strange, their arrangement, that two people who used to be in an extremely serious relationship were still in each others lives. One could also say that Erin had no self respect for even taking time to be around him after he B R O K E her heart, but that was in the past right? There was too much history, too much shared time and memories, and Erin was no expert at letting go. Even if he’d practically abandoned their relationship without a care — he was back. He didn’t abandon her in the end. That had to count for something, right? “Now you’re being dramatic. Calling people ‘weak’ because they’re intimidated by a very angry looking man lurking in the corner of the Three Broomsticks. It might not be your fault that people are ‘weak’, but the way you present yourself isn’t exactly, well, welcoming?”
She watched as he talked, and even if was being dramatic, he was also being animated — something she only got prized glimpses of. To see him be filled with some sort of emotion, even if it was annoyance, was still refreshing. Erin’s smile turned into something much more admiring, and it stayed on even as he took her hand, his voice pleading with her. Maybe they shouldn’t have been so close for two people with so much shared history, but it didn’t feel strange in the slightest, and Erin relished moments like these too much to let them go. Finally, when he was done talking, Erin spoke, “Dearest Dennis, while before I might’ve taken a smidgen of pity on you and not have made you stay in the bar until you made a friend, you insulted Barbara’s laugh. Barbara happens to be one of my best friends and in my opinion, has an amazing laugh. And don’t even joke about hurting someone, you ponce. — And she only talks so much because you intimidate her, I imagine.”
"That’s exactly it, Den! You work for the Ministry. That’s all you’ve got to say. I’m not saying you’ve got to become buddy buddy with someone right away, but just, I don’t know, not scare them off? Or I’ll set you up on friend dates.” This time, Erin was able to keep a somewhat serious face — especially because the prospect of setting Dennis up on a friend date was so hilarious ( as well as something they knew she would go through with ), that it actually was a formidable threat. “You willing to r i s k that, Creevey?”
Before he even knew it, laughter was bubbling out of his lips, a slow build up that suddenly erupted into a loud burst before dwindling down into a softer, 'I cannot believe I just laughed that hard over something that's not even that funny' sound. Hands quickly found his face to cover up the grin that had spread across it, a red tinge appearing on his cheeks from the strained effort of trying to stop himself. It wasn't the pun so much as the way she said and the look on her face as she did - this sheer amount of pride, the smugness, but most of all the ridiculous naiveté of just how lame her puns were. God, how would he even begin to ever really detach himself from this woman when she was... well, this? "I... that was... I don't... what do I even say to that, I don't have words, E, really." he said in mock speechlessness, though he look on his face made it clear amusement had nothing at all to do with his reaction. "Fantastic delivery as always. You really should give becoming a comic a second thought." At her words, his smile withered slightly, an arm crossing over his chest in the usual stance that he took when he was about to be deadly serious over something. There was more to be said by him when it came to people and weakness, his aversion of them and refusal to show them, but Erin was one of those people who made him feel so light just by her presence, he couldn't very well drag her down with his words. "I'm not that angry looking and yes, yes, they are weak for being intimidated by me, practically everyone looks intimidating in a pub, bar for you. Why do I even have to look welcoming? It's not as if I do want them to sit by me, I'm just being honest. They can sit here but that doesn't mean I have to like it."
He hated it when she put on that tone of hers. There was something about it, the rarity of having her sound half so serious even when her face was incapable of looking the part, it never failed to make him feel guilty for some reason even when he wasn't apologetic at all for whatever it was that she was scolding him for. In their younger years she used to do it because of the stupid things he tended to do; now he got the voice because of the candidness with which he spoke his opinion. Oh, and how he tended to hate everything and everyone or whatever, big deal. "How is it my fault that she's being ridiculous?! It's not an insult, it's an observation. An honest observation. If that's your opinion of an amazing laugh, then yours must be how a choir of angels laughing sounds like, because that is... a really low standard for laughter." Jaw dropping in disbelief, Dennis let go of her hand if only to give her a playful slap on her arm. "Did you just call me a ponce?! That's uncalled for! I am... a respected obliviator! I am offended!"
The threat caught him off-guard though, the next words dying in his throat along with the animated hand gestures to go with them. With Erin, it became all too easy - all his pretenses, the intimidating facade, the seriousness and the anger at the world, it all dropped at his feet, ignored for as long as they were together. He didn't know how she did it or if she was even aware of what she did to him, but it made him all the more sure that he couldn't bear to lose her. So yeah, he put up with her crazy schemes and when she wanted him to do something (or try to) he did it because fact of the matter is, he'd do anything for her. "Alright, alright, whatever you say, Miss Collins. I'll give it a go if someone comes around but I'm not promising anything." He paused, turning serious all of a sudden but with a smile still on his lips to mask it. "What about you then? Not going to make buddies? Nobody here strike your fancy?"
dennis & erin — JUNE 3rd 2023 [three broomsticks]
Having slipped into the bathroom for a quick moment, Erin hoped to Merlin that maybe, just maybe, if she left Dennis alone he’d maybe make some sort of progress talking to people on his own. Of course, when she came out of it and saw the interaction between him and the other person, who was now shrinking back to find another drinking companion, complete with his hands up in the air, Erin’s eyes felt like her eyes were rolling into the sun. “Ok, Dennis, you scared them off! I come back from the bathroom and that’s the f o u r t h person you’ve creeped out. Seriously? That’s not how you make friends. I can’t take you anywhere. “
Sighing, Erin sat in her chair next to him, taking a sip of her beer, pointing it at him as she spoke. “One of these days, you’re going to be an arse to the wrong person, and it’ll bite you in the arse.” Still, Erin did find some sort of amusement in the way people seemed to be so intimidated by Dennis, of course he’d say it was the attack eyebrows ( or used to, more often than not ) but on the other hand, it was … saddening. Shaking off the thought, Erin turned towards him. “We’re not leaving until you make a friend. Or an acquaintance, or just — don’t scare off anyone. Otherwise, I’ll bring you to game night at Barbara’s, “ she threatened, her expression almost completely serious and as menacing as Erin Collins could really be — which was as menacing as a newborn puppy. Still, it cracked, though she still tried to keep it as she started to laugh, “and I’ll make sure you actually pay attention.”
There was a moment of silence on his part, letting Erin do all the talking as he followed the guy with his gaze, his eyebrows furrowing slightly in instinctive intimidation until finally he disappeared from view completely. To be fair, he wasn't exactly the epitome of harrowing: between the wiry build and the long face, he was far from being the poster boy for scary men... but somehow, in some way, he managed to find a way to keeep people off his back. Except for Erin. Never Erin. "Don't you think 'creeped out' is a bit of an exaggeration?" he smirked as he spoke, lowering his glass back to the table as he let his eyes wander around the room. It was rare that he let himself pay attention to anyone or show interest - he was the last person you'd expect to ever give anyone the time of day and make them think he was open to any sort of connection, but that didn't stop him from sizing up people and wondering if he had a shot with any of them. You know, if he ever slowed down enough to have a life. And if he ever stopped hanging out with his ex girlfriend... who was more than just... an ex girlfriend... it was complicated, to say the least. "And don't say that like I'm your pet dog! It's not like I make you take me anywhere. You're the one who insists, remember? It's not my fault people are weak."
With a guttural groan, Dennis let his head fall to the table, the sound continuing on and sounding even louder than it really was with his head buried in his arms. To be quite honest, he didn't abhor the days where Erin made him do things with her, what he hated was he part where it had to be in public, around other people, in some attempt to get him to make friends or whatever. Her company was the primary (perhaps only) reason he could even be made to go out at all, but Merlin, was this even healthy? "God, not Barbara. Ever noticed how much she doesn't shut up? Ever? And her laugh. Her l a u g h, E. I'm pretty sure that laugh is on a register that only cats can hear. Don't make me go back there, I will hurt someone." Sitting up and leaning forward to her, he took one of her hands in his without even batting an eyelid, the move so instinctive and familiar to him now that it would've been weird if she found it weird. "Erin, please. You say that like I can't take care of myself. I mean, I do work for the Ministry, you remember that, right? And you already got me to go out! To a pub, no less. That's enough of a success, if you ask me. We don't need that whole 'make a friend' business."
OPEN — JUNE 3rd 2023 [three broomsticks]
He sighed for the thousandth time, wondering what the hell had gotten into him that he'd actually thought this would be a good idea at some point in his life. There were reasons to Dennis being as reclusive as he was, only spending all his time between work and home, and the most obvious of those would be his natural abhorrence of the human population in general... except that wasn't necessarily true, he just found that he tended to have little to no patience in dealing with them. The permanent scowl on his face said otherwise, but on the rare occasions where he decided to hang up his robes, dress like a normal person and lower his judging eyebrows, he really did make an effort to look more pleasant than he usually was. Being at Hogsmeade during the weekend - at the Three Broomsticks, no less - was testing his patience, seated at a far corner of the room swirling his drink aimlessly in one hand and the other tapping on the table to channel his frustration.
"You may as well sit if you're going to spend all night eyeing that chair, it isn't anybody's." he spoke up, finally directing his attention to the person in front of him before taking a drink. "I can't stand all that hovering."
November 1, 2023 // Ministry of Magic
"So the rumours are true. Two of our fearless leaders are dead - fancy that…"
"Shacklebolt's is true, at the very least." Dennis said offhandedly as he entered the room, windswept and perhaps a little too calm for someone who was confirming the death of someone so important. Not that he'd known Kingsley personally, which he could say about Harry Potter and McGonagall, but he felt absolutely no desire to talk about those two deaths. Typically he didn't have time to gossip (apart from the fact that he didn't want to), but the office was at a momentary standstill with everything that had happened, there really wasn't anything else to do. "Haven't you heard? They're electing Fawley after him which, if you ask me is simply..." He paused, not quite sure how to continue: it depended on where this man stood, if he was dark or light, and Dennis couldn't really tell that now because in all his years working for the Ministry, he'd honestly never formed proper connections with anyone. "... well, it's efficient of them."
In time, in time they tell me, I’ll not feel so bad. I don’t want time to heal me. There’s a reason I’m like this. I want time to set me ugly and knotted with loss of you, marking me. I won’t smooth you away. I can’t say goodbye.
