sorry for the lack of activity! memorial day weekend and all that-- I'll try to have some stuff out this week when I get a bit more energy.
-- generic starter call for mutuals! will be of varying length, likely something more lighthearted

Qrow could have counted on one hand the number of times he'd been as happy to see Yang and Ruby alive. They'd come back from the void! He'd been ready to assume the worst...had assumed the worst, briefly. It'd caused him to relapse. He'd lost weight; started drinking again; grew a whole beard. But Oscar had been right, and they were back!
But something wasn't right...each of them seemed different for their disappearance. Yang and Blake were finally together, no surprise there. Jaune had a new white streak in his hair and seemed more put together. But Ruby? She wouldn't even look at Qrow. It was a flat-out denial to even embrace him.
The better part of a week passed before the two were left alone in close proximity, seated in a private conference room. They'd been waiting for the rest of the kids and Vacuo's headmaster to join them when Ruby sucker punched Qrow with her question.
"W-Who--" His face went pallid, drained of color. Who could have told her?? Not Oscar...he would have let Qrow do that on his own. Yang might have suspected, but Qrow never let it on in front of her. He sighed and ran his fingers through his feather-fine hair. Who didn't matter. Ruby knew...best to make due with the bad turn of luck.
"I tried to tell you...in Atlas. But we got interrupted and things got...bad." That was an understatement. "I'd told myself I'd tell you when you got back, but we haven't exactly gotten the chance to talk much." This was not how he'd wanted to tell her. "I'm sorry we went so long without talking about it."
"you only just decided to try and tell me then?" her question was rhetorical and accusatory at the same time, refusing to even look at the man she had once called 'uncle'. why didn't he or anyone else tell her? what possible reason could there to keep her in the dark about this?
her gaze remained fixated upon her lap, her brow furrowed in frustration. how many more times did she have to deal with being lied to and kept in the dark? she felt a lump form in her throat and tears sting the corners of her eyes.
"what else haven't you told me? did you... not want me, or something?" the little rose asked between stifled sobs. she finally turned her gaze, but looked away from qrow entirely, in an attempt to hide her tears.
( @wintereign -- cont. from here )
ruby couldn't blame weiss for her suspicion, the little rose and dragon enjoyed their fair share of pranks. It's not as though they went out of their way to tease weiss, but blake was much harder to trick (the last time they tried to prank blake, it backfired. horribly.)
alas, this time her silent asking for help was genuine-- typically yang would brush ruby's hair; her older sister was very particular about haircare, and always insisted on brushing ruby's whenever possible. this time the little dragon was out, and while ruby could brush her own hair, she wasn't good at getting the knots out. they hurt! if anything, it was weiss who was showing up ruby by actually being better than her at this sort of thing.
"ow--" came the instinctive reaction to having the knot forced out, "--it's okay! and i just wasn't sure how to ask... usually yang just does it for me."
AT THE MONENT, YOU WANT
to be SEEN
it is so, so loud. everyone around you is talking, crowded together. despite how loud it is, you cannot hear them, even when they talk to you. you try to talk to them, but you can't hear their responses. you take this as no response at all. it feels lonely, and dark, despite you all sitting in the sun together, and everyone's having a great time except you. you keep trying to get their attention, and when you do, it never feels like enough. you can't keep doing more. it's tiring. you see yourself floating in space, it's cold, and dark. they're still down on earth, laughing, so loud. you desire to be seen right now. you feel unappreciated, you feel left out.

33. for a tense starter || if you're up for it, I wanna see what Ruby says to Qrow after coming back from the Ever After and learning he's her dad!! Give me that tension!
The trip to the Ever After revealed many things to Ruby; the state of the world, its past, about herself and her friends. a crucial piece of information had struck something in her core, and it wasn't a good feeling. qrow was her biological father. what was she supposed to do with this new information? how was she supposed to confront him on this? she had spent several days avoiding her 'uncle', but circumstances had left them alone without an avenue for escape.
there hadn't been any reason for her to speak, but something within ruby finally forced her to.
"so, when did you plan on telling me, dad?" the little rose suddenly blurted out. qrow didn't deserve the tone she had given him, but her frustration had reached a boiling point. "did you ever plan on telling me at all?"
009 - an empty cemetery at night. (hope it's okay to still send these!)
summer knew what her death — or lack thereof — had done to her family. it had ripped them apart, and had shattered what little illusion of safety and security that they were able to nurture for such a short time. she couldn’t imagine what sort of turmoil her return was putting them through on the inside.
maybe that was why she knew exactly where to look when she couldn’t find her youngest. ruby had always been just like her mother, both in ways summer adored and feared. all she could do was pray to the gods that she didn’t fall down the same path. now that she was back, she had the chance to prevent that.
“petal,” she whispered, the hood of her cape thrown up to protect herself from the wind. “what are you doing here?”
the little rose stood before the tombstone that marked her mother's grave, a place she visited often throughout her life. this was, oddly, once a place a comfort to her. to be able to sit in front of this headstone and prattle on about her hopes, dreams, and fears for hours at times, as if her mother was listening from the beyond. she wept here, wishing her mother was by her side to help her, to comfort her in her darkest moments, and by all accounts she had that now.
of course ruby was thrilled at first, overjoyed to have her mother in her life again, but at times it felt surreal- like she might awaken from a dream with her mother still gone. other times it felt... odd. how was she just supposed to move on from here? how was she supposed to pick up from where they had left off? was there even a moment they had 'left off' from to begin with?
the voice that snapped the little rose from her thoughts was alien to her, and that was what perhaps hurt the most; she didn't even recognize the tone of her own mother without an extra moment of consideration. ruby's own crimson hood had been down, resting on her shoulders, unable to hide the fact that she was clearly troubled.
"m-mo--?" she started, only for her words to falter halfway. a lump in her throat prevented her from finishing, as if that word might make her mother vanish for another fifteen years. she swallowed hard before letting out a small breath to compose herself. "--nothing, really. it's just... force of habit, i guess."
“oh, my beautiful girl,” summer gently enveloped ruby in her arms, using her cape to wrap around them both & protect them from the night air. she cupped her daughters face in her hands, staring down into eyes identical to her own. it was both a blessing & a curse.
summer remembered the day ruby was born. remembered the way she sobbed & cried out the moment her daughter opened her eyes for the first time. how she begged the gods to change the color of her eyes. ruby would share this burden too, & it was summer who had bestowed it upon her.
“you don’t have to come here anymore, petal,” summer thumbed ruby’s cheek, her fingers cold and scarred. “i’m here now, & i’m not going anywhere.”
summer looked down at the grave. how haunting it was, to stare down at your own death.
ruby wasn't totally sure how to handle the embrace at first, but certainly made no attempts to refuse it. she peered back into her mother's identical silver hues, as if to try and find some sort of sign that summer was lying. the fact that this was the first thought she had to her mother's words put a bad taste in her mouth, and forced such thoughts from her mind.
"r-right, yeah..." ruby nodded with a half-hearted smile, finally retuning her mother's embrace with a hug of her own, gradually becoming tighter as she became more and more afraid that summer might disappear at any moment. when the panic had subsided, a tear streaked down her face, followed by several more. it had been some time since summer's return, but still the little rose found herself breaking down like this now and then. she buried her face into her mother's shoulder to try and hide her face.
"i-im sorry," ruby choked between silent sobs, the night's cold breeze stinging the wet lines along her cheeks, "i just, i-- i missed you so much... please, don't ever make me have to come back here. please promise me..."
even despite her mother's previous assurance, she couldn't bear the thought of having to return to this place again anymore, but for real.
“i know, baby, i know,” summer hummed into ruby’s hair, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. she guided her to sit down, and pulled her into her lap like she would when ruby was a baby. in her mind, ruby still was. she always would be. “let it out, petal. you will never have to come here again. i will never make you. i promise.”
that was the worst part of this all: seeing ruby so hurt and depleted. summer could tell that her strength was wearing thin, that she was holding on by the pure grit of her fingertips. summer would not let her suffer anymore. not after all she already had to endure.
“you’re so strong, ruby,” she continued, wiping ruby’s tears away with a gentle hand. it felt as though it had been forever since she’d held her baby, and perhaps that was because it was true. they had so much lost time to make up for, and summer was going to make sure it would not be ripped away from them as well. she could not afford to lose anything else.
“i’m so proud of you.”
as summer urged her to let it out, it was like ruby had reverted to a small child. her sobs became too hard to stifle, hiccups between her crying, staining her mother's cloak with her tears. the words summer spoke was something she had wanted to hear all her life. it made her happy, though she always doubted if she had truly earned them.
she worked hard to become a huntress and a person her mother could be proud of, sometimes too hard. the little rose tried to make a few attempts to apologize amidst her crying, unsure for what, perhaps to try and take the attention away from her gross state of being.
"i tried to be a hero like you, like in the books you used to read me," one of the few memories the little rose had of herself and her mother, fragmented though it was, "but it was so hard. i don't know if i can... i'm not strong like everyone else thinks i am..."

So much had happened in such a short time; what was just a simple trek to the next town turned into a fight for their lives. Grimm from every direction surrounded them, causing Ruby and Weiss to become separated from the group. They were outnumbered, though holding their ground, but the monsters just wouldn't stop to give them a moment to breathe. At some point they had found themselves back-to-back, staring down the horde of Grimm that had been encroaching on them.
A particular monster approached from the group, and shot several spiked from it's back at them. Ruby had managed to block the few her way, letting out a sigh of relief. A few more minutes of clearing out the monsters finally allowed them some peace.
"That was outta no where. Alright, let's get back to the others, okay?"
...?
Something was wrong-- there wasn't the usual witty or sassy retort Ruby had grown accustomed to from the heiress. The little rose turned to look at her partner, only to suddenly have her slumping body fall into her arms. Weiss had a spike embedded in her side, warm crimson staining the pale blue dress the Schnee had been wearing.
"Weiss...?"
No response. A first wave of sudden panic thronged through Ruby, giving the other girl a shake. "W-Weiss? Weiss!!" Her hands were now coated in her comrades blood, pressing firmly to try and staunch the flow. "Hold on... just hold on!"
Where was Blake and Yang? Were they still fighting? She couldn't just leave to try and find them, not with Weiss in this state. All she could think to do was wrap her cloak around the wound to replace her hands. The fabric's color grew darker as it absorbed the blood, the little rose hoisting Weiss over her shoulder to try and drag her to safety- to anywhere.
God... oh God no... please...
Her breath was ragged from panic. Not again-- she couldn't lose someone else. Especially not Weiss.
