THE GLOOM OF GOTHAM, a familiar blanket over his person; its tainted plume of smog swirls over every high - rise, gothic building. over these behemoths, a shadow of a whisper [ 𝚟𝚊𝚛𝚖𝚒𝚗𝚝 𝚝𝚘 𝚜𝚘𝚖𝚎, 𝚐𝚞𝚊𝚛𝚍𝚒𝚊𝚗 𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚕 𝚝𝚘 𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚜 ] flits across stainless windows & 𝑔𝘩𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑙𝑦 𝑔𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑜𝑦𝑙𝑒𝑠. he makes one particular stone creature his perch, overlooking a casino at its prime. 1:42 in the morning, february's frigid breeze settles in his lungs & makes breathing a burden----- he ignores it. he only thinks about robin, close behind him. is he cold ? tired ? 𝚒𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚠𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞𝚗𝚐 𝚋𝚘𝚢 𝚍𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚛𝚟𝚎𝚍 ?
he angles his head to the side, just enough to still keep his eyes on the bustling purple rotunda. ❛❛ 𝑘𝑒𝑒𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑢𝑝 𝑎𝑙𝑟𝑖𝑔𝘩𝑡 ? if i’m going too fast, there’s no shame in admitting it. ❜❜

daughter of darkness , spirit of the night - her soul is bound to this city , a whisper in the wind that always calls her home __ a purpose that ties her : a dutiful existence , the vague eclipse of ruby bloom spark hope amidst gothamite skies . & terror abound , for those who should fear it . a symbol that saved her , plentiful in the aspiration of what she could return . THE BATWOMAN …
𝗔 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗕𝗢𝗟 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗖𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗛𝗘𝗥 , 𝗜𝗡 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 : she had learned .
heavy eyes did watch the sun crack the blackest shroud , perched atop the manor’s stone __ she had not intended to be bothersome to their schedule this early ( but had remained thankful nonetheless , for alfred’s persistence in her welcome ) . cape & cowl exchanged once again for the luxury of soft cashmere : evidence of her alter self gone , bar the harsh red mark that flares beneath one eye . & the patchwork that alfred had attended hidden beneath her sleeve .
“ i’m just surprised at how full of energy you can be at this hour of the morning … ” she’d never fully grasp his own measured ethic , how he balances the lives of batman & bruce wayne __ & will be yet another thing she will find admirable . “ i - hadn’t intended to drop in unannounced like this , but alfred saw me & he can be very persuasive __ ” a pause , a sip from her own china & a moment to bask in its warmth “ your board meeting … anything interesting to discuss ? ”
DUO NIGHTFLIERS, AT A CONSIDERABLE EXPENSE; two twirling creatures, their arms locked while their legs familiarized themselves with the twilight’s promenade. the ease they found within each other’s company ( WHEN MANY OTHERS WOULD HAVE THEIR FEAR RUNNING DOWN THE BASE OF THEIR NECK, DOWN THEIR LEG ) has its roots in the 𝑟𝑖𝑔𝘩𝑡𝑓𝑢𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑗𝑢𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑡 parts of their childhood. he fondly remembers their juvenile antics, when bruce would still be dressed up in plaid shorts & bleached white high - socks, when kate would still be in stylized floral sundresses------ their cheeks & knees dirtied with the faintest whisper of their made-up adventures. the halls of wayne manor were then filled with mature guffaws from their parents & youthful giggling, both sincere, both . . . 𝚑𝚊𝚙𝚙𝚢.
& what of those smiles now ? now aged, with premature creases at the start of each brow ( frown lines, alfred called them. 𝑘𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑎 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑐𝘩𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝑔𝑟𝑢𝑚𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠, jason retorted ), true simpers rare. but here, where his sinuses warn of a MIGRAINE with their dull throbbing, bruce resigns to the repose of the amity between him & kate; it would not be long before he forces himself to swallow his exhaustion & play the part of 𝚊 𝚌𝚊𝚛𝚎 - 𝚏𝚛𝚎𝚎 𝚗𝚎𝚠 𝚎𝚗𝚐𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚜𝚘𝚌𝚒𝚊𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚎------ but not now, not yet.
❛❛ we do what we have to. i can’t afford to not be vigilant, not when wayne enterprises seems to have an ARSONIST problem. we’ve had three docks go up in flames just in the past week. 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝗂𝗇𝗏𝖾𝗌𝗍𝗈𝗋𝗌 𝖺𝗋𝖾𝗇’𝗍 𝗍𝗈𝗈 𝗁𝖺𝗉𝗉𝗒. ❜❜ as he recounts the nights’ work, his disposition sours with a bit of his boyish irritation, ❛❛ if the investors aren’t happy, then the board isn’t happy. their solution seems to involve us being LOCKED UP in day - long meetings. ❜❜ he doesn’t have to put his frustration into words, for the bags under his eyes say more than his morose conversation could ever. fragmented into two pieces, 𝑎𝑠 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑎𝑠 𝑛𝑖𝑔𝘩𝑡 & 𝑑𝑎𝑦, struggling to fit their edges around each other: is it sustainable anymore ? is this split life doable ? ------- he already knows the answer ----------
𝚒𝚝 𝚑𝚊𝚜 𝚝𝚘 𝚋𝚎. another sacrifice to the crusade that burned the insides of his chest, bringing that vernal, steeled tenacity back to his eyes.
❛❛ i would have told you, but . . . ----- i’ll get them tonight. ❜❜
happy black history month! make sure 2 support black people , black muses , black culture ! hell , celebrate blackness itself cause it aint goin nowhere ! 🖤❤️

❛❛ DON’T LOOK SO SURPRISED. ❜❜ a steaming cup of kopi luwak stills before it could reach his lips & the old antique clock above them chimes with the passing of six. when his eyes flicker to meet kate’s, AN EDGE OF HUMOR is there, lingering felicitously before it dissipates to something of a cool indifference. after a moment, he finally indulges in a sip of the tart drink & 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 placing it back on its coaster; the newspaper previously occupying his free hand fills the large dining room with noise when he folds it back along its creases. ❛❛ i have a board meeting at ten. if anything, i should be the one aghast. alfred didn’t tell me 𝒚𝒐𝒖 were planning to pay a visit. ❜❜

“bruce filled that hole in your life the only way he knew how. with rage & violence… batman was created to punish the guilty.” — wonder girl, aka donna troy, in that titans tv show
this shit never makes sense, & i’m always open to new interpretations/variations to batman’s characterization, but this goes against the most basic attributes of what batman is supposed to be.
the last part of the quote isn’t too bad out of context, because that is what he does. if you really look at all his comics, he’s very focused on “the guilty.” but also, consider this quote from batman: legends of the dark knight, issue #0:
“ … he is a legend. to some that means the devil bat, striking in vengeance out of the darkness— to others, the dark knight. a guardian, a protector, glimpsed as sudden motion against the gotham skyline. two viewpoints, as different as guilt & innocence. two viewpoints— both the batman.”
the last two sentences are very important, & it is imperative to understand that batman’s reputation has always been “he beats up the bad guys. he saves the good ones.” it’s not one or the other, it’s both. you cannot have just one & still have a decent characterization. i’m not completely disagreeing with “batman was created to punish the guilty,” however i think within the context of titans ( where bruce is very.. obvious about his knack for murder ), it’s just not doing the character any justice. all this is for edge factor, & i quite frankly don’t understand the appeal.
i started with the second half of the quote in order to segway into my rebuttal of the first; i want to reiterate what kind of mentor/father figure he is. let’s take a look into batman (1960), issue #437:
“we can’t just rely on physical force anymore. that’s to be used only when absolutely necessary. we’re not brutalizers. we’ve got to think with our heads, not with our fists.”
i cannot stress this enough: bruce has always preached & taught the importance of investigation, of deduction, of planning before you ever even take another step forward. he is very thorough in his methods, even before he ever throws a punch. that’s what he’s always taught any of the vigilantes that he took under his wing. of course, that’s not to say that batman isn’t violent. i’m just saying that it’s not what he taught dick, jason, tim, barbara, etc. in titans, donna tells dick that batman is just someone who reaches for violence above all & that’s what he taught dick as he grew up— i don’t know why they went for this type of characterization when it’s absolutely flat in my opinion. make batman the bad guy all you want, half the time he IS the antagonist to certain people/in certain situations, but at least do it right.
as an addition, please remember that bruce is a very tender & caring man. i cannot stress this enough. he took an active interest in all of his mentees’ personal lives, he cared about their school life, he cared about their mental health. one could argue that he didn’t care enough because he put kids in danger, & that’s a valid argument. there is no black & white to batman, there never will be. it’s doing no favors for his character to try to force him into a strict label. i think it’s much more interesting to discuss his behavior & actions actively, even embrace the fact that he is such a gray character at times, but that’s just my opinion.
