The day starts off as it’s usual routine. The alarm goes off and Riddle rubs his eyes to see the sun peeking in. It’s the beginning of Autumn and so it’s darker than he’s used to. But that’s what happens with Time, he always spins and life must go on. After all, Time is no fool and he refuses to stand still. At least, that’s the tale in Wonderland.
Riddle is slow to walk to the bathroom, exhausted from the day before. His mother has been making him work harder than normal. The urge to perfect things seems to be really weighing on her lately. Is it because of how she said everything now counts into getting into that special college? Riddle’s counting the years till he goes on his hands... and a tiny voice wonders why he has to prepare five-to-six years early. Is it normal? Are other children made to work this hard? But that voice silences with what he’s demanded by his Mother.
The rules are: he must be perfect, and he must work hard as it’s expected of him. Anything less will result in something awful.
Those grey eyes stare at him back in the mirror and his stomach hurts. He hasn’t eaten since three in the afternoon from the day before. It’s now almost seven in the morning. Breakfast isn't allowed until eleven this morning; if he’s lucky. But he’s allowed plain tea and water as often as he likes - so he makes that. The stool under his feet to reach the kettle on the counter. Even at age ten, he’s too small to reach most things. He wonders when he’ll grow taller.
The next thing to do is begin his classes. Studying practical magic and its history. How mages lived in Wonderland, and other realms. He feels his stomach twist and turn and it’s hard to concentrate. It’s only seven forty-five now... He makes another tea, one with some caffeine in hopes to stave off the hunger. Riddle is silent in begging for it to go away.
The law is: Mother always says to drink caffeine instead when his stomach growls. It’s his stomach becoming disobedient... Which makes him disobedient and he cannot disobey her. Mother has and always will be right; her rules are there for a reason.
Riddle inhales the scent of the tea and drinks it.
He continues with his studies.
It’s around ten this morning when he finally hears his mother in the kitchen. The scent of breakfast burning his nose and making his mouth drool. His stomach growls and he’s never felt a desire for eggs so badly until this moment...
Riddle is timid and silent coming into the kitchen. Finding himself wishing he could be like Che’nya. Invisible to all eyes when he has to be. He knows the answer Mother will give him. It’s too early for breakfast, she’d say. Fasting brings more knowledge to his mind, she’d remind him. Stop being so weak, she’d command.
So today, instead, for once... he will try to be like Che’nya. Sneaking into the kitchen... now he's grateful he’s shorter than their counters to hide from her. Quick to use magic to levitate the egg towards him. It’s boiled, and without its shell... so in his mind, that’d be about seventy-eight calories at the very least? He knows to round up to eighty calories, add thirty more, and there he’ll have an estimate without a food scale.
This is one hundred and ten calories, approximately... out of his six hundred daily limit.
Should he risk it for a single egg? He knows he shouldn’t but he’s so hungry that he takes a bite from desperation. And for a moment... For one a singular moment? He feels the warmth of the egg, and a satisfaction. He suddenly recalls what it’s like to enjoy a bite of food and he swallows it. His stomach was no longer empty and only filled with tea.
But that moment is over when he feels a tight grip on his hair. Now his hair is far too red for it to be noticed by most but he can feel blood dripping out from her grip. It feels as if she’s trying to rip it out and he cries, dropping the half eaten egg and his mother screams. She's slapping him and he can't comprehend what she’s saying. He can only see a blur of a woman in red behind his tears and he can only hear the screams.
“But it was nineteen hours, Mama, I thought...” He’s crying, and foolishly, not apologizing.
This only makes her more angry than before and he feels a flash of magic towards him. Harsh and cold air shoving him right against the table. He’s thrown so hard he hears the wood crack behind him and the table breaks as they both crash into the wall. He doesn't know it, but there's a dent there now and a wound in the back of his head from the impact...
For the second time in his life he’s truly scared of her. For the second time he’s wishing she would just stop. Stop yelling, stop using all her magic, and stop being so mean. Why is she always so mean?
“You think nineteen hours is long, Riddle? I will make you endure seventy-two hours without food to teach you a lesson in manners! You do not steal from your mother, you do not disobey your mother, do you understand me?” She’s still screaming, even now.
All Riddle can think of is suffering that hunger again but even longer. His fear grows and something inside him breaks? ...No, something inside him builds up. Like a defense. The only defense he's ever felt and his scream echoes in the dining room. The scream matches Mother's and his eyes remain shut.
Even as she’s suddenly silent.
But the silence lasts too long.
It's too quiet. So he peeks at her with one eye... and the sight he sees scares him. His Mother is still; unmoving. There’s a lock around her neck, tight and golden. Shaped into a heart and it appears her magic, all of it, has stopped. His mother even looks a little older. Not that he’s aware of her using magic to keep a youthful appearance.
His mother suddenly brightens, smiling, and laughing; congratulating him for finding his Unique Magic. Her entire attitude shifts, and she’s on her knees, kissing his cheeks and praising him. Sweetly cooing and telling him it was all to see if he could finally manifest it like she knew he could. She's praising him over his magic, and the greatness inside him. She won’t stop petting and holding him and wiping away his tears and blood as if it's simply nothing. The touch is so gentle and he immediately begins crying. He wishes she could be this gentle all the time... why can't she?
It was so terrifying and mean, what she did, but he can’t say that. He can’t complain. Mother knows best and now he has a Unique Magic... one that is powerful enough to stop any magic in its tracks. Riddle is the youngest Rosehearts to ever create his own power. The youngest in Wonderland, and in this Queendom.
Mother knows best. He must keep listening to her. Her rules are always correct. Everything she says does provide the result she's promised. Riddle simply has to obey and everything will turn out alright.
And so that's when he properly learned his lesson...
