ON REUNIONS
“I just spent the weekend at the game and it was so much fun. So many people were back and there were tons of hot guys. It was also ex-boyfriend central – freaking M. flew in from Hawaii, I couldn’t believe it! It wasn’t too bad seeing him, but he proved to be the same old tool as always. It was cool to talk to him for a little while, but then he redefined the word ‘hover’ and I got annoyed.”
ON TAKING A BREAK
“Some weird stuff is going down with D. We’re sort of on this ‘let’s not speak or see each other for a while’ kick. Shady. Things have been pretty good between us lately, although not stellar and we both knew it. Something clearly needs to change in our relationship – it’s so routine, it’s a joke. And I need money desperately so I’m going to go to a temp agency so I can fill my days while I look for work. I also kind of want to get my hair cut.”
ON VERMIN
“The unfortunate news of the week is that we have a mouse in our apartment. We set up these nasty traps where if they run across it, they get trapped in this glue stuff. So gross. I’m caught between wanting to catch the damn thing and not wanting to have to find it shrieking and covered in glue and having to dispose of it. How hideous!“
ON NIGHTLIFE
“Friday night and I’m bored. At least I have the satisfaction of knowing I went out last night. Liz, Em and I went to a bar on the Upper West Side and got pretty hammered. So that’s good.”
ON NEW STUFF
“I’m sitting in my new bed (Serta Perfect Sleeper Sensation) in my new room in my new apartment! Rock out! We’ve been here about a week and a half and my room is looking good but I have no posters up yet so the walls need help. You name the furniture store, we’ve been to it – IKEA, where I got my dresser and bookshelf and learned that I don’t like the way the Swedes do business, The Door Store, Pier 1, ABC Carpet, Bed & Bath, etc. etc. Now I’ve gotta do this small thing called ‘getting a job.’ Yuck.”
ON CONNECTING “I haven’t seen D. once this week. I’d like to thank his job for that. I did bump into him on the street today as I went to meet the realtor, but that’s it. A friend of his from college is having a BBQ on Saturday night and he’s going in the hopes of getting in touch with someone and maybe, possibly, potentially finding someone to room with in NYC. MAYBE D. WILL FINALLY MOVE OUT OF HIS PARENTS’ HOUSE! I won’t believe it till it actually happens though. It’s truly our biggest point of contention. I have to poop.”
ON NOT RELATING
“D. is being a nightmare about this apartment thing. He doesn’t agree with my mentality about why I want to live in NYC. I, of course, find it ridiculous that he’s still living at home. We’ve had some near-fights about it, culminating in thoughtful, caring comments from him like, “How can you really feel independent when Daddy is paying for your apartment?” Then he gets all apologetic and tells me he knows he’s being psychotic and he doesn’t understand why I put up with him. Sometimes I don’t either.“
ON REAL ESTATE
“Farce of apartment searching!!! Yuck. Jenny and I waited for 4 hours at Astor Place to get the Village Voice a day early – NOT WORTH IT!”
ON WHINING
“I haven’t seen D. since Tuesday and he’s not being nearly sympathetic enough. I guess I should know by now not to expect sympathy from him, but sometimes I forget. He’s had a heinously busy two weeks at work and I haven’t gotten to see much of him and then I had the teeth out and I want him to be all calling me and visiting and asking me how I am, but he’s not. He’s not like that; never has been. He doesn’t like to coddle. Sometimes, I see his point – like I need to suck things up more and deal. But other times, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for a little sympathy.”
ON SEDATION
“Well, I have four less teeth than when we last spoke. Being knocked out on Valium was about the best thing anyone’s ever done to me. My first thought when I woke up from my sedated bliss was, “What’s the big deal, I could drive myself home,” after which I passed out for another hour. So that’s why they insist someone else must drive you home.”
ON BITCHING
“I’m getting my period tomorrow. D. has now stood me up twice in a matter of less than a week. I have to have my wisdom teeth out on the 7th. And I’ll have to be on penicillin as a result. This means my birth control pills won’t work and I will no doubt get a yeast infection. Isn’t my life GREAT??!!”
ON GRADUATING
“In my college career, I only have two papers, three finals, three sections and seven classes left. JOKE! It’s all happening so fast. I cannot wait to have no more schoolwork ever. No more homework, essays or tests ever again, in my whole life! Do you believe that? It boggles my mind that I don’t have to go back to school next year. I have been in school for 17 years!! Now, I am free! I don’t ever have to go to school again if I don’t want to. And believe me, I don’t. I am so psyched to live in NYC next year. Of course I have no plans, other than who to live with, and I have no semblance of a job. Whatever.”
ON DRINKING
“The farce of my life is manifold. I just found out that my senior essay is due in a week. Secondly, I am a total loser when I’m drunk and should not be allowed to ever again (drink, that is). I don’t need this crap at age 22.”
ON BOYFRIEND DRAMA
“Well, tonight sucked. The day started out pretty well. I had my new Nine West mules on. D. and I had agreed that I would go over to his house tonight. No problem, except that he had to take his sister to get a backpack at a camping store, which would take half an hour. So I arrive, admittedly a little late, to find he’s already eaten. I had purposely not eaten because I thought we’d eat together… but granted, I was late so that was my fault. So we leave for the camping store only to return nearly two hours later. A half hour trip, you say? Funny, it seemed a little longer to me. So we sit on the couch, I eat some soup, D. does the dishes, and then his parents came home so we had to sit there watching TV with his brother. A real thrill. I had to leave by 10:30, and D.’s like, ‘Sorry it was a boring night,’ and I wanted to scream, 'Why the f would you make me drive all the way out here to do this?!’
ON THE UNKNOWN
“I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know. I don’t know what I’m going to write my senior essay about. I don’t know if I can handle either of my summer jobs anymore. I have two weekends left in the summer and I refuse to spend them working. I don’t know what’s going on with D. I can’t fight with him all the time during my senior year. Em thinks I should consider seeing other people since in order for a long-distance relationship to work, things have to be stellar. And things are hardly stellar with D. at this point. We’re going to have a serious talk before I go back to school.”
ON NO MORE DRAMA
“Can we just talk about how D. rocks my world? We had such a good weekend. Things have been working out so well so far this year - very different from last year in that we don’t talk on the phone every night and when we do talk, the longest convo we have is like, 15 minutes. It’s better this way - let’s hear it for lower phone bills!”
ON CINEMA
“I went home for Easter and finally saw D. after five hideous weeks of separation. It was so great. We hung out on Friday and went out to dinner and saw ‘Schindler’s List’ during which I fell asleep and drooled on his sweater.”
