like it’s always people who have an income saying this. Always people who are conventionally attractive and marketing-skilled enough to make money on their videos, or people who do actually have a job. the people who physically and cognitively cannot work, no not even in non traditional jobs, and aren’t able to go through the disability application process aren’t the ones making these videos. The adults kept in their parents’ attics and basements. The homeless people living in tent encampments. The people in hospitals full time or other institutions. They aren’t the ones going on podcasts or on Instagram reels in their cute ethically sourced little sweater talking about how privileged disabled people with higher support needs are for having caregivers or being on disability. It’s exclusively people who are able to work. People with jobs or passive income. Never the folks with nothing at all

You don't have to like weed but I find people who are vehemently anti-weed but claim to be left leaning infuriating. If you go into a rage because you smelled someone smoking pot, how the fuck do you expect to form community with people addicted to meth? It's easier to say you hate smokers than to say you hate all drug users in leftist spaces because one makes you sound a bit like a square while the other is the writing on the wall. You aren't anti-weed, you're anti-drug user and anyone who uses substances is not safe around you.

I know dozens of people who use meth, coke, and fentanyl. While heroin is harder to get I do know some folks who use it when they can. Some of these drug users are my neighbors, some are my clients, and some are my friends & family. One does not cease to be human just because they use a substance you find scary.

Community doesn't mean you need to invite them to your home and look away if they smoke there. It means you don't call your property manager because you suspect your neighbor uses. It means you don't require drug tests for homeless shelters and housing services. It means the very idea of someone who smokes meth in your community doesn't make you go, "what the hell."

Genuinely kind of a wild thing to see in the replies as someone who has been professionally practicing harm reduction for years.

Also, from someone who works at a smoke/head shop: WAY MORE PEOPLE ARE DRUG USERS THAN YOU THINK. Way more people are addicted to opiates, meth, whippets, cocaine, you name it, than you have been lead to believe, and on top of that, they are often the "normal" or "functional" people you see every day, not just the person tweaking out at the gas stations. Judges, bank tellers, grandmas, teachers, the nice lady who runs your bakery— all of them. You are ALREADY IN COMMUNITY WITH THESE PEOPLE. Start fucking acting like it.

Disability requirement anyways. Fuck THW system. I fought 19 years of my life and built my own coping mechanisms that’s why tje therapists all but told me TJEY ain’t got shit to teach me. There's definitely a point to encouraging people to think about when, where, if and how they discuss their psychosis and in which contexts it's safe and constructive, but "never ever post about your psychosis online cause people will hurt you" isn't a progressive suggestion at all. People who experience psychosis have a right to talk about their lives and build community just like everyone else. It's not that I don't like other people, or don't like interacting with them. Sometimes I have perfectly nice moments talking to and engaging with others. Sometimes it clears psychological or creative blockages I was experiencing, gives me greater clarity and deeper insight.

I just want it to be on my terms.

It's not that I never respond to messages, but I have all my notifications turned off so I'm only aware of them when I want to be. And I'm so, so much happier that way. Instead of staring at a pop-up for hours or days or weeks, since it's become a necessity, a burden, someone else's idea, I seek out others when I want to, when I choose to. And it works so much better for me.

I wish others could get that. I wish they could get that I need space, not because I dislike them, but because I don't want to start to dislike them. I need to isolate and distance myself in order to retain sanity and a positive opinion of others.

But no, the second you need to step away due to being overwhelmed, it must mean that something's wrong, right?
