I ask my white and non-black/indigenous POC to just please acknowledge and think really hard about the privilege you carry when you post selfies, photos of you gathering with friends by the pool, or even just of your dinner during this moment in time. In doing so, you are actively acknowledging that you have the freedom and time to care about things outside of the URGENT fight for racial justice.
All in all, you have the freedom to do as you wish on your social media accounts. You can do what you wish with your privilege. Think about that.
Today is June 1st, the start of Pride Month. What is usually a month of celebration and joy, now has a very different feeling this year. Something that I am reflecting on, is the role that people like Marsha P. Johnson, a Black, Transgender Woman, and Sylvia Rivera had in the Stonewall riots.
Pride is a celebration of the Stonewall riots. They paved the way for many rights that the LGBTQ2+ community now have. It is a very timely and stark reminder that riots clashed on the streets of New York for six days between cops and queers.
As a white, cis, gay man, many rights and freedoms I have today are because of the riot started by Black and Hispanic women! Pride month and #BLM need to coexist. EDUCATE YOURSELF.
This piece is about prude-shaming and compulsory sexuality. It’s sort of a companion to this other piece, which is about slut-shaming and how wanting to have lots of casual, unconventional sex doesn’t make you a bad person. Follow SexEdPlus or check out SexEdPlus.Com for more stuff like this!
