It’s okay to be scared, to be angry, or to be so overwhelmed that you’re feeling nothing at all right now.
All we can ask of each other and ourselves today is patience and kindness.
If you have the strength to ask a stranger how they’re feeling, go for it. Small acts of love matter.
There’s no shame in having to turn off the news for now. You know what’s best for you.
In everything you do today, remember that for anyone you see, today could be the hardest day of their life.
One last thought for now: everything we just said is true not only when the nation is in mourning, but every day. Take care, and be safe.
Crisis Text Line is the free, 24/7 text line for people who are experiencing a crisis in the United States. The service is powered by extremely empathetic and willing volunteer Crisis Counselors who work remotely anywhere with a computer and secure internet connection.
Crisis Counselors have an intensely significant role in which they answer texts from people in crisis, bringing them from a hot moment to a cool calm through active listening, collaborative problem solving and safety planning. Volunteers play an important role in the lives of many, saving individuals from emotional distress and crisis and bringing them to stability.
Volunteers commit to 200 total hours, serving between 2 and 12 hours each week to meet this requirement. Each moment that they commit holds immense value as it is a moment spent towards saving lives.
The month of September, National Suicide Prevention Month, is a time to truly tackle the stigmas that center around mental health and raise awareness about suicide and suicidal ideation. In order to combat suicide and suicidal ideation, it is vital that individuals showcase their empathy and passion for wellness by volunteering with Crisis Text Line and helping to save lives.
