For the first time, took the cats on a road trip over the weekend. Bruce, in particular, proved himself to be a true road warrior. He was just so chill throughout the whole ride. I couldn't get over it.

Meat, She Wrote
Thanks to friends in high places (pitmaster Matt Fisher /name-drop), I got to spend the evening tasting deliciously prepared barbecue meats at the soon to be open [Fletcher's][fletchers] in Gowanus[^1]. While it was a joy to eat [everything on offer][flickr] (really, it was great), the highlight, for me, at least in terms of uniqueness, was the pig head: Although my range has broadened in recent years, I wouldn't consider myself a particularly adventurous eater. Sure I like me some bone marrow now and again but I haven't reconciled myself to offal let alone other more primal animal parts. But when the pig's head was triumphantly laid down on the serving tray and heaping spoonfuls of cheek meat scooped out, I couldn't resist having a go of it. The first thing I noticed was the texture. I can have issues with some textures- gelatinous, fatty mouthfeels don't work well with me and this definitely falls into that category. However, once I got past that (and some bits were more meaty, less fatty than others), what came next was this wonderfully tender, buttery, delicate meat with an amazing taste. I don't know if this will make it onto the final menu or, if it does, what final form it will take when served off the menu, but if it does make the cut (*pun!*), and you end up in Fletcher's, and you don't mind the feeling of fat in your mouth (*that came out wrong*), it behooves you (*sorry*) to give it a bite. Great piece at the New York Times:

"Among other things, he has said the reincarnated Mr. Jobs spends much of his time lounging in a glass palace resembling an Apple store. Phra Chaibul also has said the being formerly known as Steve Jobs is attended by 20 servants, who seem to resemble the Apple store ‘Geniuses’ who help customers set up their iPhones and other devices here on earth." So they're saying he's in hell, right?

The "perverted" sexual behavior of Adelie penguins shocked a British biologist on Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova mission to the South Pole so much that he never formally published his findings. Instead, he wrote a short monograph that was distributed to only a few fellow experts and that was lost for nearly 100 years. The short paper was recently rediscovered and is now on display at the Natural History Museum in Tring, England. The paper documented what George Murray Levick perceived to be necrophilia, homosexual behavior, abuse of young chicks and rape by what he termed "hooligan" males, but more modern research has demonstrated that the birds were simply responding to what they perceived to be sexual cues. Big Squid! it's a log squid. Really. A lot.
Some how, some way, I managed to eat this Holey Cream Donut Ice Cream Sandwich without collapsing into a demented diabetic coma. The sugar rush is in full swing. I'm bracing myself for the fall. It is going to be hard. Very hard.
