i'm not trying to rag on carol but it really is incredible how the story shows her THINKING she is the last independent and willful person on earth but she still relies on the hive to provide food and help. she starts to get nasty and demands assistance but never connects the dots of "oh i am simultaneously rejecting them but also completely reliant on them, because it's impossible to live without a cooperative community of other people". her instinct is to FIND someone who is a scientist. and this is all like, okay sure, but then you get manousos who is eating cat food and refusing to accept any help from the hive. and when he realizes the radio frequency is connected to them, his instinct is to start reading and translating nearby books to BECOME a scientist. like carol is so the ILLUSION of independence and manousos is what it actually looks like. and it almost kills him
