I like reworking pairings and characters in a complex and ultimately healthier light because I can! What if this worked?? What if they did things differently? What if this happened?? What about this experience?? (Is it projecting? Yes absolutely)

Applauding myself for somehow fitting my thoughts on this arc in just three posts. This was a feat

Pudding to me is one of the most overhated characters in the series. She’s a sixteen year old girl who has been conditioned to believe by her own mother that she’s disgusting and ugly, and since she’s not physically strong the only way she can see herself being useful is by being the cunning one. When Sanji calls her eye beautiful, the same eye that she was ridiculed for her entire life, she breaks down, and she falls for Sanji as he’s the first person outside of her siblings that sees her as something other than a monster once he sees her eye. She’s not an evil bitch like a lot of people are convinced she is, she’s a traumatised child

In other news about the wedding, I adore Luffy’s plan of using Brûlée’s power and doing the funniest thing he could: creating a situation in which a hundred feral Luffys jump out of Big Mom’s cake. Absolutely hilarious and wonderful everyone go home. Things seriously don’t go Linlin’s way cause soon enough Jinbei straight up leaves her crew. And holy hell I love this scene so much. He’s so badass! Standing in front of a terrifying emperor and not even flinching? Not being scared at all? Jinbei is one of the most loyal Straw Hats and here you can see it on full display

Big Mom’s backstory in itself is insane, and while most people will be jaw dropped at the plot point that Linlin accidentally ate her friends without even realising it, to me the Mother Carmel reveal is what always gets me. ‘Orphan seller’ displayed in the box is so jarring, and the fact it’s the navy looking for these kids should tell you all you need to know about how much they actually care for the justice they wear on their backs so proudly

While Luffy vs Katakuri is great in the anime, as Whole Cake is where I’d say the current style of One Piece finally found it’s bearings, it’s absolutely ingenious in the manga. Oda goes so hard on the panelling, and the pacing of the fight is absolutely wonderful, with the reader learning more about Luffy’s abilities, Katakuri as a person and the dynamic between the two as the battle goes along, and it never once feels as if Oda is drawing something out or adding unneeded stuff. Everything here serves a purpose, and I adore this fight, even if it isn’t my favorite in the series

Also on the topic of Luffy vs Katakuri I highly recommend this video as it goes over WHY the panelling of the fight works, it’s really good I just gotta recommend it

Something I really like about Whole Cake is how it brings back the themes of Sanji’s character explored in Baratie, and puts them on full display. Big Mom may be a tyrannical emperor that’s chasing the main characters to kill them, but for Sanji, she’s still hungry, and she still deserves to eat food. It’s the biggest reason Luffy wanted him on the crew: his kindness towards everyone, something his father saw as a weakness, but that One Piece shows you again and again, is an important trait to have

And well, the cake Sanji, Pudding and Chiffon make us absolutely wonderful. I really want to bring attention to the absolute masterclass of a panel this last one here is, from the passage of time when you’re holding your breath between the six panels before it, to the absolutely amazing rendering of Big Mom’s face, I adore it so much. Maybe it’s a silly thing to gush over and give a whole section to; but damn me if I didn’t mention it

Besides the musical number being sung in the background, Whole Cake Island ends with Jinbei now officially a Straw Hat, but having to leave for the last time to save the crew. Again, his loyalty is unmatched, one that has been built up since the Summit War Saga, and every single time it’s on display, I love his character more and more. I genuinely don’t get people who believe he shouldn’t be a Straw Hat, he deserves to be part of the crew more than anyone else you could have wanted here

audiences do not know how to approach female characters that are bad victims, particularly in the cases of parental abuse &/or institutionally backed gendered violence. viewers & readers are exceedingly willing to make an active choice to misconstrue such characters, more often than not in direct contradiction to the source material, and thus rob these characters of all moral nuance, agency, sympathy, or even narrative value. moreover, the misogyny such attitudes are rooted in also makes the audience deeply resistant to criticism, framing critics who point this out as (oh the fucking irony) hysterical and melodramatic, regardless of how well-evidenced the critic’s case is. countless arguments have been made regarding how if the character had just (been softer, been more demure, been less assertive, been less angry, been less focused on their individual survival, been less overtly hurt or been written to cope with it like an angel, etc), or had a personality more reminiscent of “softer” female characters, this would not be a problem. they will aggressively refuse to admit the paradoxical concession of the critic’s point inherent to that argument.

The more I think about the hypocrisy regarding Pudding in WCI by fans the angrier I get. We can all understand the arranged marriage being hell for Sanji, but we somehow can't sympathize with Pudding also being upset just because she was angry instead of sad? Because she wasn't the uwu girl she pretending to be? Because she wasn't the perfect victim?

Imagine spending your whole life wanting true love, but knowing your crazy mother will make you marry whoever she chooses regardless of your feelings because you're nothing more than a political pawn to her.

Then when she finally tells you who you're going to marry it's all a big fucking lie so you don't even get to enjoy the wedding party. She doesn't give you room to even pretend to be happy & get lost in the fantasy.

She's going to make you seduce this random man you've never met before, make you use your DF to erase all evidence after the fact, and to top it off you have to sit through said random man fawning over you when you've been conditioned to think his kindness is contingent on you looking & acting a certain way. You have no choice but to play along if you don't want the perfectly crafted lie of a life you've built to be taken away from you. If you want to stay safe.

That's not even taking into account Sanji's pervy persona. We know Big Mom is the best at intelligence gathering so you think they wouldn't find out about his love of women? That Big Mom wouldn't encourage Pudding to use her "assets" to keep him complacent. Did y'all forget he literally rocketed himself into the wall because of how violently he nosebled over her just smiling at him?

I can't believe we suddenly forgot how off-putting Sanji is to people who don't know him. His gag is so bad sometimes that even the fandom misrepresents his character yet we expect Pudding to understand the nuances of his personality after a couple brief meetings? When at this point she didn't even have half the information the fans did?

As far as she's concerned he IS a pathetic excuse of a man. He IS a shallow, weak person who brought everything upon himself. He is so far from what she dreamed of as a little girl it would make anyone upset. In her mind, she's being stuck with a loser for the sake of her mother's ambition.

But why wouldn't she change her mind after he tells her he's being forced too? She saw how beat up he was! Her lack of empathy is unforgivable!

Nobody gave her empathy or helped her so why should she?

The only reason Pudding is now adored by WCI is because of her own hard work. She spent her whole life concocting a lie & presumably manipulating memories to make everyone sans her family forget her 3rd eye. Then she melts into a fake palatable & submissive personality so people will instantly love her & not torment her anymore.

Even the "evil" facade she puts up for her family isn't who she actually is. She's turned her life into one big acting gig just so she could fake happiness & acceptance. Then this fucking dude with a simp fetish wants to come around & threaten everything she's worked her whole life to get? I don't fucking think so. I'm sure to Pudding, Sanji was the real villain here.

Lastly, let's not forget why Sanji even overheard Pudding say such terrible things to him in the first place.

Was he trying to be sweet & bring her food? Yes, but was he also being a perv & hoping to take a peek at her naked body? Also yes!

One thing about Oda is that he likes to punish Sanji within the narrative every time his pervy tendencies lead him to do less than savory things. It's happened many, many, many times throught the story. This was just another, albeit more extreme instance of karmic punishment for the love cook.

Pudding never intended for Sanji to hear all these terrible things. She didn't even want Reiju to keep her memories of them. She was planning on keeping Sanji completely in the dark up until the moment she pulled a gun on him. She never set out to be particularly malicious to him. It's not like she knew he was outside her balcony in the rain.

So in conclusion, Pudding did nothing wrong. Why should she be the only character in One Piece to be expected to have the foresight of the fans?? She was just as much a victim as Sanji. In fact, she's better than me! I would've been a lot more nasty to some guy squirting blood everywhere & love bombing me.

So I’m going to try to articulate my thoughts and emotions about 1133 into words.

Almost nineteen years ago on Dec 12, 2005, Oda introduced us to Jaguar D. Saul, a mild mannered giant who washed up in Ohara and met a young eight year old child. One Piece 1133 officially gets released December 9, 2024. That is two days from 19 years exactly.

Robin is a character I can relate to (both archaeologists, similar sense of humor, similar personality traits) and I have loved her from the very start. And just like her and every other Robin fan I have been looking forward to this meeting from the moment we learned Saul was alive. The fact that they finally meet again, nineteen years almost to the day from their first chapter together is amazing.

Robin has been so excited for this. She got a hair cut and everything. And we see Saul has been patiently waiting as well. And he wanted this meeting to be perfect!!! He tried to mirror their first meeting, just as Robin was recreating her hairstyle from back then.

And I fucking started sobbing right alongside Robin and the crew. Because the two of them are reuniting with one of the most important people in their lives and they are surrounded by their loved ones as they do it. The two of them are the reason each other are where they at. Saul is literally and figuratively the reason Robin lived to grow up. Robin is the reason Saul became the scholar he is today. And I am so fucking happy to see them together again. To see them get to have this.

One Piece has a lot of impactful and emotional content and I think this chapter just vaulted to a very high place on that. At least for me. If you’ll excuse me now, I’m going to continue crying from joy.
