your dividers are very cool! Not a request but do you have any tips for making them, or composition?

thanks for the compliment! i’m not the best at explaining my editing process, but i can try. you should definitely search up other divider tutorials on tumblr, i’ll link a few i found.

these are mostly based on preference, though you should read them if you have time. scroll down for editing tips!

i use a canvas size of 3072x1725, which is my default size for tumblr banners, and ibis paint x. if you use a different app or program, i don’t think i’ll be able to help much. you definitely don’t need to use a large canvas, i just prefer to use one because i like my edits to be high quality.

i prefer to use a dark grey background color after having heard that it helps with eye strain, especially if you plan to edit for a long time. it definitely does for me! i personally use #767676, though its up to personal preference. it’s optional, but you should try it and see if helps.

i use a tablet to edit, so if you’re on mobile the menus will be different. it doesn’t really matter about how tall the canvas is, because in ibis you can change the canvas size. on the side menus, scroll down till you see ‘canvas’. i use the trim feature, but you can also use the change canvas size feature too (which you have to input numbers for).

editing tips below

i search for divider bases on tumblr, sometimes using keywords like lace or gradient, though you should also search for divider bases outside of tumblr (i’m too lazy for that). i mainly search for f2u simple dividers that don’t require credit, and layer them. don’t be afraid to change the size of a divider! if it doesn’t reach to the sides of the canvas, you can duplicate it and move it or adjust it till it looks like it fits.

this is also up to personal preference in my opinion, but using folders to separate groups of layers help me a lot. don’t be afraid to use a lot of layers! i use around 50 of them. i use layer modes and filters a lot. i like using linear burn, screen, overlay, and color, but you should mess around with them to see what works. if a png you put is too light, you can duplicate the layer, change the layer mode to linear burn, and adjust the opacity.

i use screen to lighten and change the color of dark dividers, and i use linear burn to darken and change the color of light dividers. you can also use the color layer mode to change the color without affecting the darkness.

i use the stroke and the drop shadow filter a lot, as you can see in a lot of the dividers i made. i usually duplicate my divider folder and use filters on them, like the black and white and brightness and contrast filter. i clip the layer onto the original, and adjust the layer mode and opacity.

this is all i can think of currently. as i said at the start, i’m not very good at explaining my editing process, but i hope you found this helpful! experiment with layering dividers and pngs! search for dividers to look at other people’s creations, and get inspired! the more you edit, the better you’ll get at it.
