Random headcanon bc I've seen like five posts talking about this scene today -
What if Thorin did show up late and snarky and fabulously handsome to the party at Bag End as in movie!canon? But since he decided to be a jerk and make fun of Bilbo right off the bat, and Bilbo's the one telling the story, of course he puts Thorin was right at the bottom of the ridiculous book!canon dwarf-pile every time he tells it, just to get back at him?
That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates!!!
(I’m intensely riding the nostalgia train today, and doodled this while watching the first movie)
Alright, the thing I’ve always liked about bagginshield is the sense that Thorin and Bilbo do not need to be infallible around one another. They can be themselves - just Bilbo and Thorin - not Bilbo Baggins of Bag End or Thorin, King Under the Mountain.
A lot has been said already about how Thorin can be himself around Bilbo in a way he can’t be with Dwalin, Balin and even Fili and Kili, because for them he is often a king first and a friend/uncle/whatever second. Around Bilbo he can reveal his weaknesses in a different, more intimate way because he is not Bilbo’s king.
But this is true for Bilbo as well. He is weighed down by the constant pressure of his respectability. He has no close friends in the Shire and so no one to let his guard down with, no one he can be himself around, without being in the shadow of his family name. Bilbo is very much the kind of person who puts on a brave face (and I think he most certainly did this after the deaths of his parents) and we see him do this to an extent after Thorin’s death (he cries at his side, but when he is sat with Gandalf, he just stares into nothingness, nor does he cry in front of the rest of the Company).Â
Neither Thorin nor Bilbo needs to put on a brave face around the other.Â
Neither of them need to be infallible for the other.
And that is beautiful.
yeah but vulnerable thorin.
-thorin always having been the most sensitive one of his siblings. this leading to said siblings and thrain and balin and dwalin being ferociously protective of him
-thorin deeply shaken at watching thror’s increasing madness
-his friends having to watch him become more hardened and closed off after the dragon, after azanulbizar and everything and it physically hurts them
-dis regularly dumping her sons into thorin’s arms (cause that’s the only time he’s able to smile now)
-him meeting and falling for bilbo and dwalin and balin can watch his shell crack very slowly
-thorin being so insecure about their relationship after the botfa and being SOSOSOS relieved when bilbo decides to stay with him
-thorin having to be reassured and needing much emotional support to finally let all the emotional trauma heal
-thorin sobbing while being held by bilbo
-him then falling asleep curled into bilbo’s chest
The actors (specially Richard Armitage) really said fucked it and made one of the best ships
“Thorin is coming over a little queer”- Martin Freeman

“It’s a way of seducing Bilbo to come on the quest with us”- Richard Armitage about the Misty Mountain song.Â
“And that’s how I see it. And they sit in harmony with each other, I think, and are changed by each other.”- Richard ArmitageÂ

And there was an interview where Ken Stotts (Balin’s actor) was asked about the face Balin makes when Bilbo can’t say what Thorin is for himÂ
Ken said “Well, Balin knew how Thorin felt about Bilbo, so he wanted Bilbo to know how special he was for him… I think that’s what he wanted”

It’s canon that Balin knew how Thorin felt about Bilbo so imagine the convo like
Thorin: …
Balin: are you okey?
Thorin: what?
Balin: you’ve been looking at Bilbo for 5 minutes without blinking
Thorin: oh
Balin: is there something you wish to tell me?
then Thorin starts his rumbling about Bilbo and he doesn’t. shut. up. until the end of the quest
“tolkien briefly mentioned he thought fili and kili dying to defend thorin would be an appropriate ending for them. also he didn’t want to write about them dealing with the issue of succession for king under the mountain after thorin”
what if I died . what if i collapsed like , right now ..
Why no one ever mentions that Fili and Kili had some vague knowledge of magic? Like they tried to break open the Hidden Door with “fragments of broken spells”. That’s cool as shit. Even if they did probably sleep through most of their dwarven magic lessons, hence the “broken” bit.

They had been so close.
Everyone had been convinced Thorin was soon to awaken, his wounds having slowly healed and his pallor gradually growing brighter again. But then, overnight, things had taken a turn for the worse.

how do people think bagginshield is heterosexual when the acorn scene exists, genuinely
i have (1) hobbit thought and its that fili is aroace and Fucking Tired of kili and thorin. he spends all of his time in the mirkwood dungeon listening to kili wax poetic about tauriel and afterwards listens to thorin not-yearn for bilbo. hes so tired.
when he gets to mahals halls hes like "oh thank FUCK i dont have to listen to their bullshit anymore."
and then kili and thorin pop in ten minutes later after dying in the arms of their Ones.
