But then there was a grinding sound, and these glyphs appeared...
While the usual symbols I've seen here seem to be ideograms, I think most of these glyphs are instead used for representing sounds from other languages. In this case, maybe Common?

The splintering effect has completely stabilized. Whenever I move, I can see hundreds of myself move in the reflection. The connection symbol pulses with light.
The countdown swirls and disappears - the device has finished gathering energy.

The device's whirring has gotten louder. I can hear it from inside my nook. It feels almost intentional in trying to soothe me, but it's hard to think about anything but the countdown and the connections I can form when the device has gathered the requisite energy. And, well, those are not exactly calm thoughts. So it goes, I suppose.
Look, the countdown is now at 1.
... I should probably control my variables, make sure I know what causes what, like a real academic. That said, I'm not exactly an academic anymore, am I? And there's been only static for a long time.

I can be patient. The countdown has decreased to 2.
The splintering effect has definitely increased - perhaps it is an intended effect instead of an instability in the connection? I'm not sure of the purpose - the only thing I can recognize amongst the symbols around the illusion is what I have been translating (so to speak) as 'link' or 'connection'. Hmm…is it worth investigating now, or should I wait until after the device has finished gathering energy? Decisions, decisions...
Ah, speaking of, the countdown now decreases to 3.
Oh, the device now shows a reflection of myself whenever I go near it. It's not a particularly stable reflection; it keeps cutting in and out, and sort of splinters(?) sometimes? Still, it is nice (though strange) to be able to see myself properly after all this time. It seems that my hair really has lightened all the way. In a way, I think it kind of suits me? Other than that, I look exactly the same as I did before I came here.
The countdown decreases to 4.
The device is now making a low humming noise…it's kind of soothing, actually. It reminds me somewhat of the orrery in Errk's office, back in Ardmore. It seemed like he was always fussing with the mechanisms, making sure they were all aligned properly. …Well, I guess we will have to wait and see whether this device has any alignment issues I need to take care of. Heh.
The countdown has dropped to 5.
I've grown rather used to the darkness here; my eyes have adjusted and I can see pretty easily now. With all its collected energy, the device is now easily the brightest thing in this entire place (...unless you count the stars, though they are distant). Luckily, the device's glow is still dim enough that it's not ruining my night vision.
Oh, I just saw the countdown decrease to 6.
Sometimes I think of how long I've been out here, and boggle. It feels like time has stopped for me, but I know it must be continuing on, elsewhere. I have been avoiding melancholy by investigating this strange place further, however. I've actually finally been able to start mapping everything; not too long ago I finally managed to find one of my notebooks caught on one of the outcroppings. It doesn't have all its papers, but any paper is better than no paper - the rock here is very smooth and flat but absorbs ink too easily for my purposes.
That all said, my sense of direction is still not very good, so progress on the map is slow. Luckily, my examination of the symbols on the device is going much better especially once I realized the language is most likely polycephalic, like several forms of Celestial, or the Ettin lect. But I think I have deciphered a few of the symbols, and now have figured out how to open the device and put it into a mode where gathers energy. With this, I think I can transmit a stronger signal! Or, at least, a different kind of signal?
Ever since Reversed mentioned it, I've been thinking of ways to protect myself. I know it won't do much against such cosmic entities, but I've been setting aside energy for... I guess the best word would be 'training', as strange as that sounds.
I went back down into the crevice and started looking for things that I could use in a practical sense. I didn't want to disrupt the piles too much, but there was this... I think it used to be a banner pole, maybe? But the wood had petrified like everything else, and it should make for a decent bludgeon, should things ever come to that.
So I've been practicing moving around quickly and swinging it around like I intend to block or parry or dodge. It's a bit heavy, but people have always been surprised by how strong I actually am.
