This Ship Has Skin and Teeth is an online screenplay project about the fate of a ship and her crew. After Captain Emrys Bligh takes on a mysterious shipment, ambitious seaman Samuel Lee and the rest of his crewmates are forced to reckon with the supernatural retribution it contains. What follows is a fight for survival, power, and identity, as Samuel grapples not only with the betrayal of his body but his feelings for the ship’s surgeon. Story contains general horror themes, including body horror, violence, death and homophobia.
PART V
EXT. SHIP DECK -- AFTERNOON A mop sloshes across the floor, suds spilling outwards as Samuel swabs the deck. He looks across at the entrance to the cargo hold, lost in thought. With a SQUELCH, he dunks the mop into a metal bucket of water. INT. SHIP INTERIOR -- LATER Samuel passes by Dan and Tommy deep in conversation, marching through the ship's hallways, mop and bucket in hand. He throws open the door to a supply closet. MALE VOICE Samuel. Samuel turns around and comes face-to-face with Elias. He puts two hands on Samuel's chest and thrusts him backwards into the closet. Samuel stumbles over his bucket, and Elias quietly shuts the door behind him, closing them in. Samuel, furious, begins to rise, but Elias pushes him back against the wall. The shelves behind him RATTLE, tools falling. ELIAS Did ya have to make me look like an idiot, Samuel? SAMUEL What the hell are you talking about? ELIAS Don't play dumb with me. I'm not an idiot, Samuel. These men respect me. SAMUEL What, and you think I don't respect you? ELIAS Oh, I know you don't respect me. You ambitious little thing. SAMUEL Maybe you are an idiot. Elias thrusts him into the shelves again. He clenches Samuel's shirt between his fists. ELIAS Listen to me, boy. Don't ever talk back to me again. When you question me, you question the Captain. Elias holds him there for a moment, uncomfortably long, and then releases him, backing away. Samuel brushes himself off, still reeling when Elias thrusts his pipe into Samuel's mouth. He tries to remove it, but Elias stops him. ELIAS Uh uh uh. Elias lights the pipe, faces glowing red in the darkness of the supply closet. Elias plucks it from Samuel's mouth and puts it in his own. ELIAS I'm first-fucking-mate. Elias extinguishes the match on Samuel's arm. SAMUEL Shit! Elias has already slipped out of the closet, the door swinging absently. Samuel stares after him, agitated, punching the wall with a BANG.
EXT. EURYDICE EXTERIOR -- NIGHT The black waters of the Red Sea crawl up and down Eurydice's GROANING hull beneath an oppressive fog. A STARTLED CRY tears through the scene. CUT TO: INT. CREW CABIN -- NIGHT Samuel jolts awake to perpetual, dismayed yelling. Daniel is hunched upright in his bed, face contorted with pain. Tommy rushes to his side. The rest of the crew has begun to wake. TOMMY What the hell is wrong with you? DANIEL (gritting his teeth) Oh, lord! My back, it oh! Oh, God! Tommy reaches for him, and Daniel pushes him away. Tommy is taken aback. DANIEL No! Elias leans against the wall, half asleep. Isaiah hurries past him. ELIAS What in God's name has gotten into you? Isaiah approaches Daniel as he shrinks away, writhing in pain and groaning. ISAIAH Let me look at it, Daniel. Daniel feebly slaps at Isaiah and Tommy, and Samuel rushes over to assist them. Together, him and Tommy restrain Daniel, and Isaiah lifts his shirt. Red and purple, puss-encrusted and bleeding blisters, some as big as eggs, burst from Daniel's back. TOMMY (gagging) Christ, Daniel! Daniel cries out as he's released, the crew examining him with horror. Isaiah stares at Daniel's still-exposed back, then the freshly-blooded, lumpy bandages concealing Samuel's arm. Samuel's fearful gaze matches Isaiah's. An EARSPLITTING, SPLINTERY GRINDING shoots through the floorboards below. The men grow silent, say for Daniel's whimpering. TOMMY To hell with this. Tommy storms out of the cabin, shoving Elias aside when he rises to intervene. ELIAS Tommy! You mustn't go down there! Dammit, Tom! When Samuel pushes past him, Elias grabs his shoulder. ELIAS Don't be a fool, Samuel. Samuel shakes him off, all the more invigorated. Elias, remorseful, watches Samuel, Isaiah, and the rest of the crew leave, Daniel still weeping quietly on his cot. EXT. SHIP DECK -- CONTINUOUS Samuel and Isaiah step out onto the deck. Tommy is crouched before the entrance to the cargo hold. He's fiddling fruitlessly with a lock and chain across the twin doors. TOMMY Dammit! He throws the lock down, rises, then begins to stomp furiously on the cargo doors. SAMUEL Christ. ISAIAH There's no point, Tom! TOMMY Fucker! (stomp) Has us! (stomp) Hauling! (stomp) Fucking! (stomp) Demons! SLAM. The door to Captain Bligh's quarters are thrown open. A shadow stands erect in the glowing doorway. CAPTAIN BLIGH Tommy! Go the hell back to bed! TOMMY (perfectly chipper) I will not, my dear Captain! Tommy resumes stomping, grunting. CLICK. The shadow of Captain Bligh aims a pistol at Tommy's chest. Tommy grows still, moonlit face falling. Samuel and Isaiah's faces are wrought with alarm. CAPTAIN BLIGH I said, Tommy, to get your ass back in bed. Slowly, Tommy steps down from the locked doors, eyes wide, and walks back towards the rest of the crew. TOMMY Aye, Captain. Sorry, Captain. The rest of the crew parrots Tommy's shy apology and funnels back into their quarters. Samuel looks over at the glowing doorway of the captain's quarters. A pale gaze stares back at him. He hurries in after Isaiah.
