I feel like there’s a whole generation of creators that never watched the movie Apollo 13. It’s based on history, we know they survive.

It was the most stressful, suspenseful movie I’d seen in YEARS. I spent the whole movie going “OMG, are they going to make it?!!”

You don’t have to kill anyone to keep your show/movie “interesting”. You just need to be a good writer.

“Apollo 13″ is a great example because everyone who walked into the theater the day it opened already knew the ending. And you still get this enormous sense of relief when that first crackle comes over the radio. When Ed Harris sits down, you sink into your chair in relief.

Because the characters don’t know the ending. And we care about the characters. We’re experiencing what they’re experiencing vicariously, through them. That’s the catharsis of good storytelling. 

And the people who made the movie understood that and they were all good at their jobs.

You create tension by getting your audience to care about the characters (which, honestly, doesn’t take all that much, as humans can form an emotional attachment to a Roomba [literally] and will). Once your audience is invested, you can create tension a million ways. 

It’s entirely possible to tell a story with life and death stakes that’s full of tension, of course, but if you have to have life or death stakes or there won’t be any dramatic tension, you’re not doing your job as a storyteller.

I was glued to the television set during the Apollo 13 splashdown, and I watched the landing live on TV.  I knew they would make it - the movie was based on Jim Lovell’s memoir Lost Moon, for crying out loud!  And yet when the capsule lands, and the words “Houston, this is Odyssey” come crackling over the PA system, I burst into tears.

Death isn’t what matters in fiction.  Caring about the characters absolutely does.

i think. this idea enchants me so much bc what i want really in a game is like a historical community simulator where i can make the fake people farm and live and watch society change over time, and the interpersonal Drama

downton abbey is aristocracy propaganda but boy did i love watching the fashions change over time, and shots of historical kitchens and stuff?? it’s like. a similar Thing i Want in my brain.

hey, sorry to be a bother, but i really need help. i'm a trans guy who stopped taking hormone replacement therapy because it was too expensive and weeks ago i also decided to stop taking my bipolar mood disorder medication because it is really expensive as well and i couldn’t afford the treatment. that was a VERY BAD IDEA, and i’m still feeling awful from lack of meds. currently going through a depressive episode so strong i’m doing my best not to commit unlife (like my bf says). i’m completely out of medication and i just am not able to function in this state.

if you could, please signal boost this post/donate! i'm not big on asking too much for help, but i really am at a loss here :(

also i am making a new post because i had to buy dinner and groceries for my boyfriend today since he didn’t make much at the traffic stop, and he was really hungry :(

tip for healing via tumblr: blacklist everything from things that trigger you to only things that have just been annoying to look at. unfollow people you don’t want to see on your dash. unfollow that mutual that posts depressive shit that doesn’t help your mental health. block people who piss you off. etc. blacklist guilt trippy phrases. go to lengths to make your experience on tumblr more enjoyable and doesn’t have a negative impact on your mental health. you get enough of being annoyed and negative emotions in real life and during the day, but this is tumblr. it’s meant for fun, not to make you feel worse or affect how you see yourself. give yourself a break
