’ Alright, then. ‘ A content smile plays on his lips; the request was nothing he wasn’t happy to oblige. ’ We’ll stick with the name that fits you so well, Sabine. ' It rolls off his tongue sweetly, a name he indeed found as stunning as the woman who had it. His eyes almost betray such thoughts with the way they gleam while looking at her. One of these days, the good detective would find the sense to actually own up to such feelings and take some bloody action. ’ Oh, it’s a stupid Tarantino film. Group of blokes dress in suits and all have different colours as their codenames. To be honest, I don’t remember much more of the plot than that. ’
OH, SHE COULD get used to that. She could also get used to the dizzying feeling that came with whatever dance she and Rogers were currently doing. –– Sure, Jacinda would have some words ( mostly teasing ) to say to her later, but right now, she could have just about as much fun as she wanted to. “It sounds riveting,” she teased. “Actually, it sounds a little bit fun, and right up your alley. You strike me as a guy who’d rather see fast-talking gangsters in a movie than watch a sappy reunion on the beach.” Her nose scrunched as she smiled. “Am I close?”
hookedcop.
’ I wouldn’t mind that one bit. ‘ Certainly would be a break from the usual. No one around there really bothered to call him anything other than Rogers. Hell, he doubted half even knew what his first name was. But not Sabine ––– for some reason, she cared. ' Jas has a good ring to it too. And Mister Blue. Kinda makes me feel like a Reservoir Dog. You’ve got plenty of options, chef, just take your pick. ’
“IF WE’RE GOING to be on a first-name basis for you, you’re gonna have to be on a first-name basis for me,” Sabine replied. “None of this Chef stuff. It’s Sabine, plain and simple. It’s the name I’ve had all my life, and I think it fits me just fine.” She wasn’t even sure what this game they were playing even was any longer, but they’d been playing it a long, long time. For just about as long as she could remember, Officer –– Detective –– James Rogers has come by for beignets and banter, and Sabine had been all-too happy to oblige him in just that. Sometimes, even coffee. Suddenly, her smile wasn’t from the positive review, but was from the conversation. “ –– What’s a Reservoir Dog?”
hookedcop.
Seems like she was rising up to the challenge. Good, he liked that. Rogers waggles his eyebrows, not hiding how much he was enjoying the repartee. ‘ I can’t blame you, it’s a good colour too. ' He takes a step closer to her; both out of sheer nerve and due to that pull he couldn’t deny whenever she was near. ’ It’s Detective Rogers, actually. ' Another step follows, his head canting slightly. ' And I happen to think yellow and blue go very well together. ’
“HOW ABOUT I just avoid accidentally demoting you in your title and just stick to JAMES,” she asked. –– It was mostly because pretty much no one called him anything other than ROGERS, and Sabine never really was someone to go with what everyone else did. And the other part was that she happened to like the name. J was her favorite letter in the alphabet, belonging to two of her favorite people, after all. “Or Jas, when I’m feeling particularly happy. How does that sound, Mister Blue?”
hookedcop.
The mask of smugness he wears so bloody well falls for a minute, when teasing unveils a fact that hits him like a curve ball. ‘ Wh- People make fun of my accent? ' It’s a detour, one he doesn’t stay on for much longer, deciding it best to let it slide. Besides, it was much more fun to enjoy how he had managed to throw her off. He gets a boost out of it, the smirk easily coming back to playing on his lips. No detecting skills were required for him to catch that blush creeping up on her, and he takes it as an opening. ’ Oh, no, I’m a big fan of it. But I just love yellow. It’s one of my favourite colours. ’
HER FLUSH ONLY lasted a moment longer before she found her way back from it. If he was going to overtly compliment her, she could do the same right back. It was FAIRPLAY; it wasn’t flirting. “Oh, really?” she remarked. “I’m much more partial to blue.” Blue, as in boys in. As in a certain police officer’s eyes. As in the sea, for some reason. Sabine’s chin tilted up toward James, and she shrugged. “C’mon, Officer Rogers,” she remarked. “Keep up.”
hookedcop.
No, she wasn’t that bad. But he couldn’t give that up now, or the whole game would be lost. He must stand his ground –– even as the now familiar nickname rolls off her tongue and inevitably warms the heart of a man so unused to have anyone show him affection of any sort. ‘ You insulted my heritage. It’s equal to stabbing in my book. ' Yet he fails to sound offended. ’ Is that what you reckon? I wouldn’t be so sure. You look pretty good in that yellow apron. I think it’s a bigger draw than the verbal abuse. '
THEY WERE IN some strange, all-too enjoyable sort of stalemate. Neither seemed willing to dig any deeper than they had, and neither were going to give up any ground. It was a FUN kind of stubborn, wasn’t it? Sabine grinned at his claims and shrugged. “If bad-mouthing your accent is the same as a stabbing, there are a LOT of people in Hyperion Heights who you need to make visits to,” she remarked, her smile widening in PURE amusement. But at his compliment, she stumbled in their back-and-forth scoffing for a moment to try to regather her ground. “Oh, please,” she replied, looking to the side for a moment before chancing a glance back at him, her smile a mixture of pleased and shy. “Are you saying that you don’t like the abuse?”
hookedcop.
Should have seen that coming. But really, part of him did. It didn’t keep his eyes from widening as lithe fingers mercilessly take the phone from his grasp, and did nothing to stop amusement to shine brightly in his eyes. A hearty laughter leaves the detective; revealing perhaps that this outcome was exactly what he was going for. ‘ Did it? Just like that? ' He indulges, making no motion of recovering what was his. ’ That’s awful. I was really hoping I could warn the people of Seattle of how cruel the owner of the Rollin’ Bayou really is. ’
“YEAH; JUST LIKE that,” Sabine nodded, eyes wide and guileless. “I’m shocked and horrified. I want you to put out your truth just as much as anyone! Jas, what’re you gonna do?” Her lips quirk finally, unable to play it straight much longer. She LAUGHED, shaking her head at her own antics. “But c’mon, I’m not that bad,” she insisted. “And I only save the verbal abuse for my very favorite, repeat customers. I thought it was why they kept COMING BACK.”

Oh, this was working like a charm. Well done, Rogers. His attention is still trained on the device at hand, tapping on it a few times before drawing in a breath and looking up at her. Always as nonchalant as possible. ’ Oh, just the yelp app. I’m figuring out how to leave you a review. ’ Gaze drops back to the screen, a pensive look on his features. ‘ What do you think of Good food, but the owner tried to stab me? ’
SABINE LET OUT an involuntary gasp of indignation and GRABBED the phone before either of them could be entirely sure what she was doing. For someone who could play it so cool most of the time… she was acting like a totally different person. She tapped a few times on his phone ( jabbed at the screen, more like it ). “What’s this? –– Oh. Oh, I see.” She looked up at him, giving an apologetic shrug. “It looks like Yelp just closed down,” she said. “Yeah, it’s sudden for sure, but we all saw it coming. I’m sorry that you couldn’t leave that review.”

He hadn’t known what to expect when her act started, but damn it if he didn’t have to try his hardest not to laugh at it and keep some shred of dignity while he watched her with squinting eyes that only made a weak attempt at a glare. Rogers purses his lips, nodding along as he produces his phone and preoccupies himself with it. ’ That’s funny… ‘ Eyes glued to the screen; he is looking for something. ’ Really funny. ' He says absently, lips curving into a winning smirk as he seems to find it. ’ Ah, here it is. ’
SHE ONLY HAD a moment of self-congratulatory satisfaction before James had pulled out his phone, and her eyes narrowed again. He began to ignore her in favor of the phone, and that wasn’t all that fun, either. “What… what is here?” she asked, finally, her curiosity and need to KNOW winning out over her need to play it cool.
hookedcop.
’ No, I don’t think so. You probably miscounted. Common mistake. ‘ Though he knows she won’t buy what he’s selling, he doesn’t give up the act. Rogers shakes his head decisively, only betraying his antics through an amused gleam in his eye. And as determined as he was to keep a sober semblance, he breaks into a grin before he knows it. ’ Oh, come on, I’m barely a millennial. In some circles, I don’t even make the cut. I’m entitled to some ignorance when it comes to my bloody phone. ’
SABINE TURNED HER phone upside down and brought it to her ear, mimicking a Rogers-like scowl. “Hello,” she groused. “I’m Officer Rogers. I use words like bloody even though I haven’t lived in England in lord-knows how long, and I don’t know how to text Sabine back, even when she promises me beignets if I figure it out.” She added a few grumpy noises for effect before breaking into a grin with a wicked gleam. “You’re impossible,” she said, laughing. He was impossible, and she was drunk off of one good review. What a team.
give me a broken, self-loathing man who firmly believes no one could ever love him and a strong-willed woman who doesn’t take any of his shit and gradually becomes his light and hope and sun and stars and i assure you i will ship it til my dying breath

Rogers makes an effort to look neutral as she holds him under her scrutiny, though he couldn’t quite wipe away the smirk that still lingered on his lips. Deciding to be cheeky instead, he cants his head to the side, awaiting her conclusion. ’ As you should. ‘ A frown of feigned confusion creases his brow. ’ Why did you give your number to Weaver? You really ought to block it. ' A pause, abandoning the playful tone. ’ It wasn’t that many. ’
“TRUST ME, IT was you, and it was twenty-seven.” Her tone was playful and amused rather than accusatory; like it seemed to always do when James Rogers was around, her voice just got… happier. Damn him. “You are the world’s worst millennial,” she decided. “You’re like an old man in a younger –– “ beautiful… “ –– body. Seriously.”
hookedcop.
Perhaps he was acting a bit too suspicious, but he hadn’t meant it. Really, he was more admiring her than worried about some review that only said what he already knew. A soft chuckle spills from the detective’s lips, head shaking in his defence. ’ I can assure you I wasn’t. For one, I’ve no idea how to use yelp. Though I’d probably have written something similar if I did. ’
SHE APPRAISED HIM a moment longer ( a moment longer than necessary, maybe ), and picked the phone back up. Good Press ! She’d gotten GOOD PRESS. She knew her truck was amazing; she knew she was a good cook. Knowing that someone else thought so was fire in her belly. Finally, things were looking up! “I believe you,” she replied. “After all, which police officer was it who sent me twenty-seven texts just with the letter Q?”
