After a long break due to a cold/allergies we haven't been working with Cruiser recently. Today I finally got back after it with a light mental workout in his stall. He surprisingly didn't regress at all! He was backing with gentle pressure and even did a few steps of a turn on the haunches without fighting at all :) (2/12)
Snow 😡😑
We took a few days off due to a baby shower and then a pretty intense snowstorm. So today I just did some light ground work with Cruiser. He's doing much better with moving his shoulders and politely backing up. Hopefully we'll be able to start working again soon! (2/4)
More lunging tonight. I got side reins today but wasn't quite sure how to use them so we just lunged under saddle. I came home and read about the side reins so I think I'm ready for tomorrow. I feel like I'm only a day or two from getting back on him and having a much more enjoyable time :) (1/29)
We had a nice breakthrough on being quiet today! He only whinnied 3 times and none of them were very long screams or distracted him from working. The trainer we saw on Monday was in the arena so hopefully she saw the huge improvement in him. I should get his side reins tomorrow for working :) We also went and saw Zilla today. The ground at her stable was too muddy to bother working her but she was super excited to see us! Can't wait to start working her again! (1/28)
Going right :)
I bought a rope halter for Cruiser so that we could continue to work on his space invader tendencies as recommended by the trainer. I have to admit, I'm pretty impressed by how quickly he picks things up. He's already back to normal on lunging both directions and is actually lunging better than ever before. He only had one small disagreement when I asked him to jog to the right one time. He backed to pretty well and is doing well with remembering to stay out of my space and keep his eyes on me when we're walking to know when to stop :) (1/26)
Today was our first lesson and boy was Cruiser in a mood. The lesson turned into an evaluation because the trainer felt bad charging me when I didn't even get on him. She helped me address his worsening pushiness issues and after those are better we can start with actual lessons. He wouldn't lunge at all to the right and was a screaming, moderately panicky mess at the beginning. After the trainer left, I managed to get him lunging to the right at a walk without any fits. We have a lot more work on politeness and personal space as well as lunging to do. Right now it's basically daily work to get him back to where he should be so we can move forward. (1/25)
Cruiser was in a heck of a mood today! He was very into flipping his head and screaming for someone, anyone to come save him. We got some progress on going to the right in very tiny circles. We managed some tiny figure eights before he had his meltdown.
So we switched gears and started trying to work on flexibility and moving his shoulders. Then another horse came into the arena and any focus he had was long gone. It didn’t help that the girl was being very intrusive into our personal space, taking up ¾ of the arena just to walk :(
Thankfully, we have our first lesson in 4 days!

I finally got to ride Cruiser today! We only walked but at least he was able to focus on me and not his reflection. He’s still having his traditional issues with circling to the right. Tonight he wanted to back with his head high rather than go right. But we eventually got some bending to the right and one circle before we finished. (1/19)
Peace and Quiet!
Finally....Cruiser was actually quiet the entire time he was in the arena which was awesome! We worked on turns on the haunches which is definitely not his strong suit. He’ll turn on the forehand all day long, but he’s just not very mobile in his shoulders. This is definitely something we’ll be working on more.
In the stall, he managed to stay tied without being fidgety or untying himself. I only had to take the rope out of his mouth once! And he seemed really excited to see me...he nickered when he saw me!

We definitely need to work on our turns on the haunch....but he started to get it at the end :)
Today I was alone when I went to see Cruiser which added a couple new challenges. He had to be closer to the scary giant door when I opened it for one. He walked pretty calmly to the mirror end of the arena and walked on the lead fairly well. He was pretty vocal today 😑 The real fun started after we left the arena to go back to the stall. He swung his butt outside of the barn when I turned to shut the door then decided that he couldn't go back inside. Thankfully a couple was leading their horses back from the outdoor pens and he followed them in. He hadn't pulled that one in at least a couple months... Once he got back inside he was a little spookier than normal but walked fairly calmly to the stall.

Cruiser vs. the mirror
After talking to someone else who also rides western at our stable, I decided to use immersion therapy basically on Cruiser to get him over his fear of the horse in the mirror.
He bravely walked with Eddie down to the end of the arena, as close to the mirror as he could get and managed to remain calm! We worked on backing up and walked in some circles near the mirrors. Hopefully next time we’ll walk down to the mirrors with little to no reaction and be able to start riding.
We also accomplished something huge for Cruiser…he backed on a loose lead! I’m so beyond proud of him. He responded to just the word back and me stepping toward him. I love seeing progress like that on something we’ve spent years working on! :)

Cruiser backing on a loose lead. For a horse who wouldn't back at all as a 2 year old and took all of my weight to get to step even one step back, this is a HUGE accomplishment! These are the breakthroughs that make me remember why I love training horses!
Day One (2016 Edition)
Today was the first day working with Cruiser in 2016. Well, I’ve worked on little things like backing and patience a couple times, but this was his first time in the indoor arena in 2016.
He’s evidently terrified of his own reflection in the mirror. Couldn’t get him to focus on working at all. We thought he was doing really well not calling to the other horses in their stalls, but after about 5 minutes he started screaming. He politely bucked walking along next to me (as much as that is possible).
I’m sure a large part of his issue was an excess of energy from not being worked in a while along with not being in that arena in a few months. But his immediate solution to being scared is to get as close as he can to me….so our most pressing issue is a refresher on personal space.
Next time, we’re going to the round pen first to burn off some of his excess energy before facing the scary mirrors again. Also, we’re going to work on patience, being tied up, and respecting mom’s personal space even when we’re scared.
