Amazing Vintage Key Guns

In the present day, prison guards do not carry firearms often unless they’re isolated from the prison population. In the olden days, guards (also known as “turnkeys”) needed some extra help with the prisoners, especially when opening cell doors which usually required two hands. To solve this problem, someone invented the key gun. The information available on the invention is limited. That “someone” was quite a unique person to ingeniously think of making a gun from a key. Given the size of the “gun’s” parts, it was probably someone who made watches. The craftsmanship on some of these is spectacular. The oldest key gun in the collection is from the 16th century.

Sirens broke the night with their sobbing wail And bedded down to a sleep that now leaves a funny taste In the heads of those awoken from dreams of better times. The kiss of oblivion still lingers sweetly on their lips Tasting of the finest wines and most longed for skin Heavy with longing and regrets made flesh again By the dropping of the night’s forgiving mist. Limbs work against the need for closure And the desire for far away impossible things Before succumbing to the eventual release Of sweet, sweet oblivion.

A dancer

In a perfect world he would have been a dancer His movements filled with the grace and beauty Of poetry made life And the sun would shine for a chance to light His way along the earth. This world is not perfect. He moves with all the calculation and deliberateness Of a man jumping to his death With the intent written in his eyes. All he knows is the touch of metal The taste of blood A never ending descent into loss and sorrow And the knowledge that the sun still shines.

He'd break the bones of God If he believed he existed and could reach that high With hands that could have held beautiful women In another life. He looks to the stars often and without hope And knows that he looks upon the last wandering remnants Of dead galaxies. He looks into a looking glass And recognizes himself as a star. The gun feels heavy in his hand And he relishes the way the weight ties him to the ground Makes him feel as though he won't float away A dancer in the wind. He relishes the taste of the steel And the final thoughts of getting a chance At the life of a dancer.

What inspires you to write?

My inspiration usually comes from past experiences and desires that I don't feel comfortable discussing in any other format. If I can capture those feelings in a poem, I put them into a world where I can control them and determine their outcome. I don't always feel completely in charge of my emotional state, and poetry gives me a way to get that control back.

I saw you limping there amongst the flashing man-made stars

And longed for a simple taste of you

To breathe in the heady musk of a steady threat

And breathe it out as pure and simple love.

They've broken a lot of what you were

With thieves' intent and lusting eyes

For shedding light on life's mistake.

I drank until it overflowed To flood the very heart of it With something more than empty lines And pages filled with wanting space. The reason of it was sinking fast In floods of cool and wasting light Until we no longer saw where It meant to go at all. We dried our eyes On spools of soft and yielding time Bandaged our heads with reason And supported the weight of doubt With linked arms. We told ourselves “It all comes to this end” And threw handfuls of dirt Until we could play Atlas no more And let it fall. I drank away the last of it And let it overflow for the last time Before giving my guilt away To the dark.
