Pride Month -Shelter-2007

For an indie gay movie in 2007, Shelter is head and shoulders above a lot of them in terms of quality. Also, unlike a lot of gay movies during that time, the actors/characters are not shy about physical contact. I don't know that I'd call it a coming-of-age movie even though it wears that coat.

I love this movie. It hits all the right spots for me - a cute kid, an artsy, family-oriented protagonist, a genuine, though brief exploration of how the working poor are trapped on a hamster wheel and how class differences impact relationships. The MC is scholarship kid smart and talented, loving, hard-working, and still stuck. Being gay both weighs him down more and frees him.

Ok but like, am I just delusional or is Steve not trying to compete for Nancy's attention when he wants to climb the tower, but just doing the thing he always does: be the first the volunteer for the physical challenge because that is the thing he is good at, rather than all of the rest of them who are primarily very clever and intelligent?

Like everyone constantly rags on this man for being an 'idiot' is it any wonder he jumps at an opportunity to be useful? Like yes, I can see why Jonathan is jealous but I feel like that's more of a him being insecure thing than that Steve is actually angling for anything? He wasn't even looking at Nancy when he pointed out that thing in the book either he was just looking for answers I think?

I see so many people complaining his characterisation took a step back but I just don't think that's true, I think he's being genuine when he's arguing back to Jonathan in the car, also.

He always does this, he gets in the fights, he jumps in the lake... I dunno man I think he's genuinely just trying to help?
