New research published on why pie is totally, empirically, undeniably better than cake ... via http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/03/pie-verus-cake-scientific-approach.html?m=1

After a long winter hibernation, we're coming back ... mark your calendars!
Substitute the words "hot" and "bake" for "drunk" and "f*ck" respectively, and that's been our theme song this past summer.
If yesterday's tart was the prettiest, today's wins for most elegant.
Just like Gwyneth Paltrow in "Emma," according to Time Magazine, resplendent in all her swan-necked, empire-waisted, orchid-tending magnificence.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again:
Few things in this world are prettier than something baked in a fluted tart pan and served on a pink plate with scalloped edges … Audrey Hepburn in “Charade” being possibly the only exception, of course.

About this time last year we enjoyed a trip to Mission Pie in San Francisco ... so good and so far away. At least we have our EAT MORE PIE coffee cup.

The final product was gluten- but not dairy-free: a fresh fruit tart with berries over a layer of pastry cream inside a buckwheat crust.
One of our gluten-free experiments: buckwheat crust about to be baked.

Thinking of Julia made me think of Dorie, which made me think of one of my favorite cookbooks, in which I found the recipe for this photogenic tart filled with fresh oranges and almond cream.
This particular tart was going to be served at a party but was not finished in time ... which almost lead to disaster when a particularly tipsy party guest mistook unfinished pie ingredients for hors d'oeurvres, and started eating the carefully dried and seeded orange slices.
Photographed by Nicole Rodriguez, whose fabulous photographs were recently shown in New York.
According to the invitation, "Baked goods and French wine will be served." Naturally. If we were in New York we would be all over this like white on rice.
We're on vacation this week enjoying some southern hospitality. According to Emily Post's Etipedia, etiquette expectations down here are a bit different from what we're used to back home.
We're lucky to have lovely hosts, but nonetheless we're still doing our best to be good houseguests ... by bringing yummy treats that conform to everybody's dietary restrictions of course! Photo by Nicole Rodriguez.
It's not technically pie-related but we're just so damn proud!
David D'Ostilio's contribution to the Phillips de Pury Staff Show got a special mention in Arts Observer.

We made a lovely galette with peaches and cherries recently, but forgot to document it. Woops! The crust was a very successful experiment with two parts whole wheat flour to one part cake flour (left over from all those cupcakes).
The understudy pictured here is nectarine and blueberry in a rye crust ... you get the idea ... Photo by Nicole Rodriguez.
Speaking of coveted cookbooks, any one of Penguin's Great Food series would also make an excellent present ... even if we Americans only have access to a relatively limited selection at present. Perhaps by the time the holidays roll around, more will be available to those of us who cook in the U.S.
No rush, friends and family, we're still taking copious notes about other readers' hits and misses.
