IMO, blurring the lines between “I’m defending them because they’re right” and “I’m defending them because you’re taking this too far” is step numero uno to cutting down the very existence of fair trial and democracy–even in places where saying that might seem a little dramatic.
Mob mentality is extremely strong in humans and it’s also extremely dangerous. Mobs don’t think things through. Mobs kill and they destroy and they can’t be reasoned with. Someone trying to calm a mob down isn’t someone defending the ~problematic party~ It’s time we re-learn that.
"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.

i think short-form content has made ppl want to read less and expect "the truth" on a platter more and more and more. is it any wonder that gen ai is pushed as a political weapon? especially in search and message summaries, keeping the complacent uninformed and the curious misinformed

nigel farage was a member of parliament "representing" clacton (he goes to the US to schmooze with trump more than he spends time in his own constituency). he's leader of reform, a far right party and is a fascist piece of shit. he also looks like a sea devil from doctor who
he's responsible for brexit, which has tanked the uk economy and is also in the epstein files.
it was discovered that he accepted five million pounds from a cryptocurrency billionnaire in thailand and failed to declare it, which, if found guilty, would cost him his seat in parliament. so to worm his way out of the investigation he quit
this triggered a by-election in his constituency. he immediately announced he would be running for his seat he resigned from. an obvious farce to flex the support he supposedly has.
thing is every other political party could tell what he was doing so boycotted the election.

He's been a joke candidate for some time. In the UK anyone can run in elections, you just need ten signatures from residents and £500. This time, he genuinely has a chance of winning. Without the other major parties to split the vote, he could potentially unite the anti Reform vote in Clacton and win Nigel's seat
so Nigel will either win and the investigation into him will continue, which will lead to him being fired, OR he loses his seat to a man with a bin on his head.
