By the way... New Spamtenna supercut and its 43 minutes long
now we just need a political figure to die
there are actual Real humans that walk among us that believe Spamton is choosing to be homeless or that the morally correct course of action is to Kill or Maim him rather than Help him
Something that has bothered me for a while now in the discussion surrounding Spamton's trans coding (or rather, the denial of it) is the idea that the dress mannequin can't represent anything negative because it would sully the meaning of The Dress itself as a symbol of freedom and self-acceptance. However, I think this argument fails to consider the idea that the dress and the dress mannequin are two different objects that represent two different things.
When talking about the meaning of the dress in this instance it's important to recognize that the dress can't be separated from the mannequin, both contextually and literally.
They are a package deal. The dress is permanently attached to the mannequin and must be analyzed with this context in mind. The dress being unobtainable on its own and instead being affixed to the mannequin makes this item inherently different from the dress in Undertale.
In Undertale, the dress is wearable. It's free to be given or taken with nothing to get in the way of that. In Deltarune, the mannequin flips this aspect of freedom on its head. The dress is unable to be taken off the mannequin or given to anyone else. The choice is taken away and the object is rendered useless.
The mannequin represents a lack of choice in the ill-fitting roles imposed upon oneself by others, and I think chapter 5 bolsters this idea even more with Pink's comment about how it "doesn't fit" just like how Spamton won't fit into the mannequin in chapter 2. Conversely, Ralsei likes the dress, but would be unable to wear it because it is instead being forced onto someone who doesn't want it.
Perhaps the dress freed from the mannequin would not evoke these same negative reactions, but as it is right now, the dress mannequin is the opposite of the dress in Undertale and shows how forcing people into roles that don't fit is a detriment to everyone. And, in my opinion, this is extremely fitting for a game like Deltarune, where the statement we are challenging throughout the game is not "In this world, it's kill or be killed," but instead "No one can choose who they are in this world."
Spamton & Pink are two sides of the same coin that is Kris
I’ve seen a lot of people complain that Pink’s placement as a secret boss in chapter 5 is disconnected or unfitting. but i think she's actually perfect for the last secret boss, especially if secret bosses are meant to symbolize a desire for freedom. Now i will yap about it for several paragraphs
several parallels are built between Spamton and Pink during her fight, which make it clear they’re meant to be compared. their designs both feature pink and gold, they both steal a body that isn’t theirs, they’re both involved with green strings, they both feature Mad Dummy in their boss fight/theme, are both puppets related to cats, and they both have odd connections to the weird route (as evidenced by the translation of Cutie Mew Mew Magic). in almost every other way however, Spamton and Pink are opposites. Spamton’s story is a tragedy; from the start, his rainbow-colored peers don’t accept him as their own and see him as lesser for being different and less capable. he’s a broken and decrepit doll who’s had life screw him over every step of the way, he’s been abandoned by everyone he ever loved and cared about, his body has been marred beyond recognition, he’s treated as a living puppet with no autonomy or freedom, and he doesn’t get to keep his dream body or ‘fuse with his chosen vessel'. Even after being defeated by the fun gang, none of his problems are fixed; he has no choice but to accept his status as a simple puppet. Spamton is Kris’ worst case scenario. they are terrified this is going to be their own future, they’re visibly shaken by Spamton’s fight unlike any other in the entire game. i think the reason Chapter 2 in particular features a character which symbolizes such a depressing future for Kris is because Chapter 2’s dark fountain is created by the Roaring Knight. a character which Kris is very heavily implied to have some kind of partnership with, one where the Knight holds power and control over Kris (as evidenced by the knighting scene after their fight, and the high probability that the Knight is the person who talks to Kris on the phone and sends them orders). the dynamic Kris has with the Knight can be compared to the relationship Spamton had with his benefactor, where he must follow orders from a mysterious voice on the phone lest he be punished (and punished he was). by this point in the story, Kris is both being metaphorically puppeted by the Knight, and literally puppeted by the player, leaving them feeling a complete loss of autonomy. this situation is opening way to Kris’ worst future. one where they are abandoned by everyone and thrown aside like an unwanted puppet. like Spamton. in Chapter 5 however, the dark fountain is created by Kris instead. though the creation of the fountain was clearly premeditated (likely to get time for the Knight to kidnap Asgore), i don’t think it’s crazy to say that part of the reason they created it in the moment was to distract Susie from the Rudy situation. to keep Susie happy, because they don’t want her best day ever being ruined by the news. Kris cares about Susie so, so much, and it’s clear she’s a huge part of the reason Kris can now see a future for themself where things aren’t so bad. this hope manifests as Pink. Pink is present in Kris’ subconscious before Chapter 5 even begins. Kris plays Shop 3 on the piano in Noelle’s house, a song which is later present in the shop owned by Pink. Shop 3 shows a more somber side to Pink’s character, as she simply watches the sunset, captivated by how freeing it feels to be able to do so in her dream body. Pink herself, of course, is very much a parallel to Kris, being a Darkner and a Lightner both using the same body, who struggle with differing wants and desires and must ultimately learn to cooperate with each other despite that (which may hint towards the idea that Kris' ideal ending would be them and the player learning to understand each other, rather than one or the other being banished for good).
even though Pink isn’t really a flower, when she pretends to be one, HER rainbow-colored peers all see her as one of them and accept her with open arms, uncaring of her strange circumstances. In the end, Pink gets to keep her dream body and watch the sunset with her best friend. All things Spamton desperately wanted and never got to have, and all things Kris hopes to have. Pink is Kris’ best case scenario, their subconscious manifesting a future for them where everything ends up fine, even if just for a little while.
Spamton being an example of Kris' worst self/future doesn't mean he isn't deserving of kindness and safety though, quite the opposite. Kris’ self improvement journey is mirrored by the fact that showing Spamton kindness at his lowest will reward the player with the Dealmaker, an item which reduces Puppet/Cat damage by 40%, greatly helping to defeat Pink (aka help her in her self discovery journey), while choosing to hurt Spamton will just give you the Puppet Scarf, a near useless item that doesn’t help at all with Pink’s fight. the same way being shown kindness by Susie and Ralsei was the only way Kris got motivation to keep going despite all the bullshit happening in their life. on the other hand, doing the weird route will make Spamton, a manifestation of Kris’ worst self, a mandatory boss. He will become HIS worst self, he will hurt others and accept his role as a puppet if it means he can gain freedom in some small way, before being killed, leaving the player with a Puppet Scarf no matter what. An item which will either be, again, completely useless for defeating Pink in an “aborted” weird route, or won’t be utilized at all in a side B weird route, as Pink is completely inaccessible, with Kris’ hopes for a better future being completely destroyed and their life ending in a similar way to how Spamton’s did. their worst nightmare came to fruition.
hi extremely important addition that super reinforces this, and went completely over my head until @crysentia pointed it out. but Dialtone is an unfinished, sad sounding version of Shop 3. i edited them together to make it more obvious
also their shops both feature clouds and a sun.. except Spamton's is a bad attempt at a recreation of it, and Pink's is.. almost, the real thing
angry trans people go!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE POWERr OF [[GOD]] AND [[ANIME]] !!!
alternate Woke Vers. underneath
Spamton's whole thing was that he was a puppet on strings, failing to gain freedom from the forces that controlled him, and failing to become anything more than a puppet despite his attempted rebellion. Meanwhile, Pink's (AKA Mad Mew Mew's) whole thing was that she was a spirit possessing a body that was a living thing all of its own, with it's own desires and feelings, that she couldn't fully control despite her attempts to do so.
I think it's really cool how both of these characters reflect the relationship between Kris and the player, Spamton from Kris' perspective, and Pink from ours.
A puppet fighting against the one holding the strings, a soul fighting against an uncooperative and unruly vessel. The puppet cannot survive without their strings, the soul needs the body, both cannot exist without the other. And yet, despite needing one another, they exist in constant tension and conflict.
Ralsei literally being pushed into a CLOSET by Flowery when they had to put the hat on (which represents them being less open to expressing themselves) is honestly hilarious and incredibly obvious imagery. Hmmm I sure do wonder what it means
Glances at the ""cupboard"" with the Pipis in it and Tenna treats it like a secret that would ruin everything if people found out about it and when the Pipis is revealed to Tenna's employees they react in disgust
could it get any more obvious
i so badly want to dig deeper into the Cutie Mew Mew Magic lyrics but i'm not sure how correct the translations/transcriptions that exist right now would be... the references to ch 5's weird route are certainly interesting and it seems like there's a lot about darkness too that i would love to dig into
the contrast between my tumblr and my twitter rn is so funny to me. went dead silent over here after ch 5 so i could focus more energy into retweeting 5 billion posts about PINK 🩷🩷🩷🩷💥💥💥💥💥💥
There is nothing more peak than Pink and Mew Mew Kissy Cutie (thats the name I like to give to Pink's body) both wanting to be real girls. Wow I can't believe me and my body are both catgirls and trans!
brings a tear to my eye. they share a goal and now they work together to achieve it and kiss about it
transmasc spamton deniers DNI
it's somehow still happening
my love for Susie deltarune is unquantifiable i absolutely adore her fuck every adult in that town who ever gave up on her she’s MY daughter now
i can’t stop thinking about the allusions to her home life i need to Kill Somebody
very pointedly doesn’t call her parents when toriel asks her to
her “defense” is putting her arms up in front of her face like shes blocking a punch, as opposed to something more fantastical, like Kris’s shield or ralsei’s cape
seemed genuinely surprised over getting her own bedroom
frequently seen eating whatever she can get her hands on (the alley milk, chalk, Kris’s shampoo??, etc) ((yes this could just be a bit but it feels more important than that)) + constantly seems to be hungry
^ adding onto that, one of the main ways she shows care for people is by getting them to eat (letting Lancer have the darkcandy, making sure ralsei has a slice of cake, baking the pie with toriel)
^^ adding onto that AGAIN, Ralsei is very careful to make sure Susie always has enough to eat in the dark world (offering to bake for her, filling her fridge)
doesn’t claim any of the houses/apartments in town to be hers, and anxiously asks Kris “we’re going to your house, right?” in ch.4
becomes super protective/attached the moment any adult shows her the slightest bit of care and doesn’t treat her like shes “bad” (toriel, old man, etc)
lightworld outfit appears to be pretty tattered, jeans have holes in them
always wanting to go back to the dark world
doesn’t seem like she’s gotten a lot of positive feedback before from teachers/adults (mentions that the old man is the only one whose taught her in a way that didn’t make her feel stupid)
acts violent/mean as a defense mechanism when shes upset (Lancer fight, Ralsei confrontation)
tells Kris that they “have a good mother”, + Toriel was the one who ended up comforting Susie when she was anxious about moving to a new town again, as opposed to her own goddamn parents???
mentions “one of the places I used to live”, implying shes been moved around a lot
doesn’t go to church, like we see many of the other kids doing with their parents/families
everything surrounding the piano incident— nobody stood up for her when she was told she wasn’t allowed to play (like you’d think a parent would), nobody was watching her/stopped her from coming back and smashing it, and nobody ever tried to teach her to play
tells kris that she hasn’t been to the diner since Toriel took her, presumably at least a year or so ago
I cant wait to add more to this in t-minus 4 days
In addition to this-
She explains how she's never been 'picked' or 'chosen' by anyone
Once for Halloween she was a box. Like. Just a box
She's always challenging authority
And encouraging other people to do the same
She tells Noelle that some people won't just take 'no' for an answer and that she has to stand her ground
She makes a lot of grammar mistakes
In chapter 1, after Kris catches her eating the chalk, she says that this was her last chance and that if they rat she will be expelled
She can't stand other people having less than they should (e.g, Ralsei's room being empty, Kris' side of the room not having any awards)
Always on edge when she senses that someone will betray her (literally her worst fear)
considering getting deltarune on my switch just in case the potential mew mew stuff next chapter will have any major differences on switch
im going to cry., look at him.
every time ppl discuss that scene with Ralsei and Tenna towards the end of ch 3 they get SOOO close to darkner oppression theory and yet So far away
