They don't have one specific backstory, rather their story, as well as their form, can be adjusted to whatever "world" they're currently in. You see, these two are entities who can go around different universes and blend right in. Despite that, some things in their stories will always remain the same, like their personalities or how close they were to each other since childhood.
Ruby is the more energetic one in this duo, and the one who usually gets the two in trouble due to her impulsiveness. She's a very friendly and open-minded person and many see her as a good friend. Despite usually being a ball of sunshine, she is capable of more serious and deeper conversations, but only sometimes!
Saffy is the calmer one, someone who can stay calm even under stress and find a way out of almost any situation. She's empathetic but also logical, making others see her as someone reliable. Despite that, she isn't completely "innocent" and occasionally helps Ruby in her shenanigans, as she still finds them fun.
The two spend most of their time together and hardly ever argue, as they don't trust anyone else as much as each other. Sometimes their understanding of the other may look like if the two could read each other's minds, but they never specify if it's true or not.
One last thing, in the more modern-world stories, I like to imagine them as streamers playing video games together, and also being good at singing and posting song covers online. They don't need to be popular, I just like the idea of them doing these things together.
