This grey sulphide is the most common source of lead, usually found as plain grey veins or lumps. Sometimes though, a lovely museum grade specimen emerges from the Earth to delight our eyes. It often contains viable amounts of silver, and the Romans used to mine it in Wales and Spain in order to smelt the precious white metal out. The name was first used by Pliny the Elder, the famous Roman naturalist who died in the great eruption of Vesuvio that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. It was used over 3000 years ago in ancient Egypt as makeup, the kohl one sees around the eyes in ancient paintings.

Minerals: Rutile

Though other forms of titanium dioxide (TiO2) exist, the mineral rutile is primarily composed of the most common natural form of the oxide (other elements commonly found in rutile include iron, niobium, and tantalum). The name rutile comes from the Latin word rutilus, meaning red. 

With a body-centered tetragonal unit cell, rutile is composed of titanium cations surrounded by an octahedron of six oxygen atoms. Aside from being a mineral on its own, rutile is well known for forming needle-like inclusions in other minerals, often quartz, producing what is known as rutilated quartz. Other inclusions of rutile produce what are known as star gems with asterism as well as chatoyancy in cat’s eye minerals. 

Along with ilmenite, rutile is a major source of titanium. Applications of the mineral itself often take advantage of its optical properties: rutile has one of the highest refractive indices among minerals and nanoparticles of it are highly absorbent of UV light. Titanium dioxide is a key ingredient in many sunscreens, as well as a major source of white pigment in paints and other objects.
