It’s nice to see someone else in the archaeology community talking about not wanting to drink alcohol or not drink heavily bc, not to open a can of worms, some of the accepted alcohol culture at digs is alarming. Another suggestion if you are at a party and people are paying attention to you is get a soda in a glass and just say it’s a rum and coke + most bartenders understand that kind of strategy

There's definitely an unfortunate amount of drinking that goes on in our niche. I'm hoping that as our new generation moves into the field we can get rid of that attitude. I think it opens the door to a lot of other problems that we deal with as a discipline, especially when you combine it with fieldwork.

Yeah, it's why I had to quit. I started acting like an ass to colleagues and this field and my relationships are worth far more to me than getting liquored up once a week.

People should be more accepting of this!!! Literally the only acceptable response to someone saying this is "wow, good for you for making the choice that was right for you!"

It can be very hard though depending on where you're doing a dig. Like if you're in rural Ireland and the only place to social with locals is the pubs. And then said locals want to buy you drinks because that's only hospitable to your new American friends. And you as the American interloper really have no choice in the matter because are you not going to drink something that someone has bought for you?

I understand the pressure in this situation, and as anthropologists we often feel like we need to blend in with communities. But you still have a right to refuse, even if it's difficult. Especially if you're on medication/have other health issues/worry about alcoholism. If drinking is something that will cause you harm, you need to advocate for yourself-- you can't do a good job if you aren't at your best.
