“What IS Panethni?”
(Previously known as Pan___)
Someone has informed me that there’s a synonymous term for Panethni that I did not know about when I originally came up with the term—it’s called Panracethnic!! Go check it out if you want. :)
Have you been seeing this term over on Tiktok and are unsure of what it means? Let me explain, as the creator of it!
Panethni (This is NOT a shortened term for “pan-ethnicity” as Panethnicity is already a term and should NOT be claimed to have been “coined” by CTDR. Love you guys, but thats not our place.) is a term created to describe someone who identifies as a race, but more specifically every single ethnicity within that race. EX. “I’m European, but I identify as all European ethnicities so I use the term Paneuropean.”
“Since there’s no collective term, what are all of the terms?”
(This was created before an official collective term was made. All of the smaller labels for races still stand.)
Panasian
is a term under the Panethni umbrella used by those who identify as Asian, but rather than identifying as one or multiple Asian ethnicties (Such as Korean, Chinese or Laos), they identify as all Asian identities. (This will be copy and pasted with notes when needed from now on, so I apologize for that.)
Panwhite/Paneuropean
is a term under the Panethni umbrella used by those who identify as White/European, but rather than identifying as one or multiple White/European ethnicties (Such as German, Irish or English), they identify as all White/European identities.
Panindigenous
is a term under the Panethni umbrella used by those who identify as Indigenous, but rather than identifying as one or multiple Indigenous ethnicties (Such as Cree, Cherokee or Zhuang), they identify as all Indigenous identities. Please refer to the end of this section on how to use it properly, and who it applies to.
Panblack/Panafrican
is a term under the Panethni umbrella used by those who identify as Black/African, but rather than identifying as one or multiple Black/African ethnicties (Such as Ethiopian, Nigerian or Egyptian), they identify as all Black/African identities.
Panhispanic/Panlatine
is a term under the Panethni umbrella used by those who identify as Hispanic/Latine, but rather than identifying as one or multiple Hispanic/Latine ethnicties (Such as Mexican, Dominican or Peruvian), they identify as all Hispanic/Latine identities. These can be used interchangeably due to the meaning of Hispanic and Latine.
Panpacific Islander
is a term under the Panethni umbrella used by those who identify as Panpacific Islander, but rather than identifying as one or multiple Pacific Islander ethnicties (Such as Samoan, Hawaiian or Māori), they identify as all Pacific Islander identities. Please refer to the end of this section on how to use it properly, and who it applies to.
“Who can use Panindigenous and Panpacific Islander?”
When using these terms, you are also identifying as Panracial whether you like it or not. Indigenous people exist all over the world, and most are other races along with being Indigenous. Same thing with Pacific Islanders. Meaning that, when you use these terms, you are acknowledging the fact that you are Native Chinese, German, American etc all at once. Again, same thing with Panpacific Islanders. Please create your own term if you would like to identify as one singular race and all the Indigenous ethnicities in that one race.
Yes and no QNA time!
“So if I identify as more races than what most would consider normal, does that make me Panethni?”
NO.
Panethni is only meant to be used by those who identify as ALL ethnicities within a race—not just a few. You are not Panethni if you don’t identify as all of them.
“Okay, so if I feel more connected to one or a few ethnicties more than the others I identify with, am I still Panethni?”
YES.
It is perfectly okay to be more connected to one culture or a few cultures more than others. But you need to identify as all ethnicities in that race to be Panethni.
“Can I identify as Panethni if I dislike one ethnicity due to its actions?”
YES AND NO.
Truly, this is up to you. If you feel uncomfortable saying that you are also Israeli (for example) then it is okay to say that “I am Panasian, excluding Israel.” I know that the alter that originally wanted this term is personally uncomfortable saying that they are Panasian without specifying that, and that is perfectly fine AS LONG AS ITS NOT FOR STUPID REASONS. EX. “Waaa!!!! Thailand is so ugly, I’m not identifying as Thai!!!!!!!!!!” or “A person of this race did something bad to me, which means that EVERYONE in that race is a bad person!!! I don’t want to identify as that!!!!!!!” It’s important to note here, though, that all countries have done horrific things in history or the present. As a Panethni, it’s important to recognize all of these events and call out your cultures as well. But it’s okay if you are just wanting to cut one out of your identity (again, with good reasons.) Don’t act like a child about it.
“Then can I be Paneuropean but only identify as Eastern European ethnicities?”
NO.
These specific terms are strict for a reason. Please, if you feel like it would make you more comfortable, create your own term such as Paneastern European.
“Can I create my own terms for this?”
YES, BUT…
It’s important that these terms follow the rules of both CTDR and Panethni —respect. If you do not respect the culture nor these terms, I will not be supporting that term and will encourage others not to use it. Same thing with going against the meaning of Pan: All. Paneastern European is a valid term as it encompasses an entire group, but cherry picking to make a term that could easily be seen as just having multiple ethnicities is not. Something like Pancertainjapanesegroupsandonlyafewchinesepeopleandmajoritykorean is NOT a valid term. You can make that term, sure, but again I will encourage others to not use it.
“Just to be sure, is Panethni short for Pan-ethnic or Pan-ethnicity?”
NO.
Panethnic/Panethnicity is already a term used by others outside of the community. In order to keep everyone as happy as possible, Panethni is NOT short for either of these terms. It obviously is about ethnicity and race, but I and i’m sure others as well would prefer it to only be referred to as Panethni rather than Panethnic/Panethnicity.
More info/QNA….
“I want to identify as Panethni. Where do I start?”
Like everyone else
in this community. With research. It’ll take time, effort and likely help from me or others—but you NEED to do research to use this term. Read up on The Japanese/China conflict/genocide, German relations, and history of every ethnicity you’re transitioning to in general. It doesn’t have to be more than 10 minutes of research for each one, at least at the beginning—but as your identity progresses and blooms, I encourage you to research each one more deeply.
“Whats the emoji combo for Panethni?”
The emoji combo
for Panethni is 🎐🪡. The first emoji represents being CTDR, while the thread and needle represent something much deeper. Imagine a blanket full of patches—you sewed them all together by hand, choosing whatever feels right. Every patch is different in it’s own way, but similar enough to where you can tell that they’re related. That’s what Panethni is. It’s taking ethnicities and sewing them together to make a blanket term that truly feels like you.
“Is there a flag for Panethni?”
No, not currently.
If anyone would like to create that, that would be awesome!!!!! I would love that sososo much. Especially if it’s for the “smaller” terms like Panasian or Panafrican.
I’m going to finish this post off just because I’m exhausted after trying to write this three times because Tumblr kept deleting it. If you have any questions, please ask!! I’d love to answer.
