“I mean Barnacle Boy hated being called a sidekick, but I think he might’ve been in love with Mermaid man.” he mused. “That just makes me sound like a super secretary. Hmm, nah I think it makes me just sound like I’ll wear very short form fitting pants with my hero costume.”

“Okay, but still. He stuck around with it for a long time. I think he just hated being Mermaid Man’s sidekick because he was just a pretty boy knucklehead. Like, Barnacle Boy had most of the brains, if you think about it. I would have gone solo early on if I was him- so I guess there must have been some love thing going on between them. It’s stupid-love is.” Nicola chuckled, trying to visualize the other in tight shorts. “But do you? Make the title your own. Show people that sidekicks aren’t just doofuses.”

“I don’t think so. I mean, look at how long Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy went at it.” They shrug. “You could call yourself an assitant superhero but it doesn’t have a nice ring to it, I think. The juvenile sound of sidekick makes the job sound action packed.”

Kiara was busy sipping on a strawberry milkshake when she felt as though she was being addressed. “I sure hope they’d have better things to do than watch us,” she huffed, taking a pause from her beverage. “Although if they are, then I hope they’ll take mercy on us and just come and take over the planet already. Us humans are clearly not doing enough to keep it in good shape. Maybe they’d do a better job.”

“ I personally feel like aliens have some serious ulterior motives otherwise, they would’ve landed a long time ago. It’s like they’re waiting for us to completely destroy ourselves so that they can have Earth to themselves. And all these weird sightings are just to mess with us- I’m sure of it.

Dallas was wiping down the counter as the chef prepped the order of the client sitting in their usual seat. “Aliens? I can’t say I think about them much,” he admitted. “Can we even be sure they’re real?”

“That’s fair. I’ve been making a conscious effort to not think about aliens ever since I was eight when I first saw E.T. But, for some reason a couple conspiracy theories were recommended to me on Youtube and I was intrigued enough to watch several of them last night..late last night I should add...” Nicola embarrassingly glances away for a moment. “The universe is a little too vast for all life forms to be contained on one planet, don’t you think?”

Maia sat at her table, the laptop before her completely taken apart as she studied each piece trying to understand what they did individually. Once she heard the question coming from Nicola, she was immediately intrigued. “I think if aliens existed and they were watching, they probably wouldn’t be watching us. Or at least not for long. I think most of their attention would be on the governments of our world. How our leaders think and what they do. At least that’s what I would do if I were watching aliens.” She shrugged. “Do you think we’re entertaining, or… what did you call it? Sad animal welfare commercial?” She said jogging her memory with a small chuckle.

“Okay, nerd. Why focus on governments? Would you plan to take them over?” Nicola teased, as they made their way over to their cousin and settled down across from her. Normally, the laptop pieces would have cauht their attention but they were focused too much on the topic at hand. Maia’s amusement causes them to chuckle as well. “I don’t know...I mean that’s why I was asking. If you think about it, aliens have made these really quick ‘appearances,” Air quotations are made. “over the past few decades so it’s either because something so tragic has happened that they decide to take a closer look or...they just come down here with their fancy lights and flying saucers just to get a reaction out of us. I can go on but I guess I’m just inbetween.”

“Probably a bit of both.” she shrugged her shoulders as she glanced down at the other. “Depends what part of the word there watching? If its a third world country probably the sad welfare commercial whilst if they where watching a high school hypothetically it would be remotely entertaining watching females run around after males.” she rolled her dark hues as she glanced over at the other. “Is there a set lunch time topic though? or is it just whatever sparks interest at the time.”

“That’s one way to look at it. But you can also argue that a lot of third world or developing countries have interesting cultures.” They quickly point at the girl to acknowledge her statement. “You’re right. But don’t most people talk about their jobs or studies or the place they’re at to break the ice? I mean, here I am, a stranger straight up asking you about your philosophy on extraterrestrials.”

Anastasia was perched atop a bar stool, munching on a bacon lettuce tomato sandwich with avocado when she became aware of the unfortunate presence of Nicola. Not in the mood to argue, she tried the method of ‘ ignorance is bliss ’ for a solid few minutes until Nicola felt the need to speak gibberish. “ It depends, are they looking at you or me ? ” she quipped once she’d finished half her sandwich. “ You’re right, it’s super weird, but since when did social protocol matter to you ? ”

Nicola had certainly noticed Anastasia’s presence but they didn’t expect her to respond. They rolled their eyes at her response, which was obviously a setup for insult either way. “Let’s pick a healthy medium- they’re looking at both of us, right here, right now.” A forced smile as they turned to look at her. “They would be amused, or rather impressed considering we’re two fine young adults attempting to have a friendly conversation, right?” They added scoffingly. “Social protocol matters a lot to me- mostly because it makes others feel comfortable. And being the weirdo I am, the least I can do is acknowledge that I’m breaking said protocol. That’s why the people love me.”

IT WAS THE BEST AND ARGUABLY THE SHORTEST TIME OF THE DAY- LUNCH TIME. The curly haired techie was situated in their regular seat at the counter of The Golden Spoon, awaiting their order. The tapping of their fingertips was mimicking the dancing of their thoughts. Out of nowhere, they blurt out, “Hypothetically, if aliens existed and they were watching out us- do you think we are remotely entertaining to them? Or would it be like one of those sad animal welfare commercials?” The question wasn’t addressed to anyone in particular- just to whoever was listening and wanted to engage in weird intellectual conversation. “It probably isn’t your normal lunchtime topic, but I’m curious.”

“I’m not saying you owe me a drink or anything, but I won’t say no if you buy me one,” Bekah commented, sliding into the empty seat, looking to the other who was already nursing a beverage of their own. “What are we drinkin’?”

“Just between you and me- this is just seltzer water. I have a big exam tomorrow and I can’t afford to be hungover. I just need the atmosphere to calm my nerves.” Nicola took the lime from the side of their glass and squeezed it into their drink. “But you can order something stronger- my treat. Maybe then, the bartender can stop looking at me like I’m a baby.”
