Her hazel eyes narrowed as she heard his tone. Snarky much? She thought to herself as she rolled her eyes and slowly began to heal him as she looked up at him. Rose knew he only lost focus when he was angry and had stuff on his mind. “You’re not fine, Charles.” She stated as she looked up at him and licked her lips as she furrowed her brows before handing him ambrosia. “Eat this. You won’t and you’re not going anywhere until you talk to me. You’ve been ignoring me all week.” She pouted slightly but that didn’t hide the temper and hurt in her eyes. She had missed him and him ignoring her only added to her hurt. “And you’re going to tell me why.”

Charles exhaled, “I am fine,” Physically he was anyway. He barely felt the wound being inflicted and he didn’t feel it now. Perhaps he had become so numb to the pain. Or his emotions were numbing it. His anger and sadness. Yeah, he was sad about what he’d seen. Seeing Rose talking and laughing with someone else made him think that she deserved someone better than him. Of course she did but every now and then he thought that she didn’t want better than him. Maybe she did. He took the ambrosia and slowly ate it. He was definitely stalling. He had to think about his answer. He didn’t want to say something stupid, “You looked pretty busy last time I was here. I didn’t think you’d notice,” He muttered. That was definitely not the right response. He knew that as soon as he looked up at her face and saw her pout.

Rose hadn’t given the day with Ronnie a second thought. They were just friends and had been for a while. Sure, he flirted, but he always flirted. She didn’t think nothing of it and when her sibling came and told her Charles had been in. She frowned. Why did he wait for her? She wondered but shrugged it off and went back to work. When he didn’t come in for a couple of days, Rose got worried. She missed him coming in and talking to her for hours and she also wondered where he had been because come to think of it, she hadn’t seen him out around camp either.

The blonde sighed as she grabbed a couple of things she needed before heading over to him with concern in her eyes. “You’re hurt, that’s what’s up.” She pointed out, realizing that he wasn’t in the mood for jokes so she didn’t joke with him and she sat down on the bed to examine him. “What’d ya do this time? This is worse than your other ones.” She whispered as she tenderly placed her hands on the wound and winced in pain for him. It looked like hell. “Charles….”

Charles nodded when she pointed out that he was hurt, “Yeah, I know,” He said simply, there was a hint of snark in his tone. A part of him knew that he didn’t hold resentment towards her but towards Ronnie. He shouldn’t take it out on her but he couldn’t help it. He watched her as she examined his wound but he avoided her gaze. Although she could probably tell from his tone, he didn’t want her to see the anger or jealousy in his eyes. He didn’t even know what he’d say if she asked about it. He’d probably lie. Say nothing was wrong or say it was something else entirely. Something to do with his family, the one’s who’d disowned him. He shrugged at her question, “Lost focus, I guess,” He winced when he felt her hands on the wound and then exhaled, “I’m fine. I don’t want to get an infection is all. Just do your thing and I’ll be on my way.”

Charles rarely got jealous. But he got angry so he supposed the two went hand in hand. After another sparring session ending badly, only half-intentional, he had walked into the hospital tent looking around for the blonde to find that she already had a patient. Charles recognised him as Ronnie Pearson and when he made his way over, he realised that they were laughing. Ronnie was famous around camp for being a ladies’ man and Charles’ fists clenched. He had had a huge gash on his arm but he didn’t care anymore. He was jealous. Ronnie was flirting with her and she was laughing with him. She obviously wasn’t opposed to it. Another child of Apollo came up to him and treated him and he left before she even noticed.

He avoided her for the next few days after that. Rose appeared to be busy anyway so it wasn’t hard. Charles just stayed in his cabin, only leaving when he really needed to. But eventually he had to train and eventually he would lose focus and hurt himself. And of course Rose was the only person available to help him, “What’s up, doc?” He muttered dryly, sitting up on the hospital bed.

Rose smiled softly as she rested her head back on his chest and closed her eyes. She liked the sound of that too. A frown made its way to her face but she knew that they needed too. “Probably.” Rose yawned as she nuzzled his chest as she felt sleep pull at her. She felt safe in his arms. “Goodnight, Charles.” She whispered.

Charles wrapped an arm around Roselyn, pulling her impossibly closer against him. He kissed the top of her head and let his head fall back against the pillow, “Goodnight Rose,” He whispered back. For the first time all week, he feel into a dreamless sleep. No nightmares. Just the thoughts of the blonde floating through his mind.

Rose’s eyes brightened after a few moments. She knew he did but they would be together. Just then and she squeezed his hand. “Then we will. When you’re ready. It’ll be fun. Just me and you against the world. We could go and see so many things.” She rambled happily with an underlying promise that she would protect him with everything in her.

 “You and me against the world,” Charles replied, “I like the sound of that,” Glancing at the alarm on his nightstand just behind her head, he realized that it was quite late. Or rather quite early. He sighed. He could have stayed like this and talked with her all night about seeing the world and whatnot but he had a 9am training session later, “We should probably sleep,” He said quietly, sounding as disappointed by the fact as he felt.

“Whaaaat?” She giggled.

“Well that answers that,” Charles muttered, standing up and taking her arm to get her to sit down on his bed, “Alright, I’m gonna get you some water. Stay here, okay?”

“I could always consider worse things to call you,” Rori teased, sticking her tongue out at him in a playful manner.

“You’ve got worse than pretty boy?” Charles joked.

Rose couldn’t help but laugh a little more at his laugh and she watched him. He was so handsome when he laughed and smiled. She tilted her head to the side when his smile faltered for a moment before it reappeared and the blonde had a feeling it was forced. “Well. It’s a thought and I want to travel.” She told him, hoping that maybe one day he’d go with her. “Don’t you want to see the world? We could do it together.” She suggested, hoping that his smile wouldn’t be forced this time.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” Charles admitted, “Last time I lived outside of camp, my life wasn’t great. I block it out most of the time. I focus on each day as it comes,” The idea of thinking farther ahead than next week terrified Charles but knowing that Rose would almost definitely be a part of it made it seem less scary, “I’d love to see the world with you, Rose,” He said quietly, reaching to take her hand and smiling.

Rose smiled as she fell in love with his smile all over again. It was something she didn’t want to admit to him. That she was in love with him. He was one of her closet friends and the thought of losing him scared her to death. “I’m sure you’re right.” She giggled and her eyes softened. “My mother’s family is from Ireland. Have been for generations. It’s a magical place and its some place I want to leave when I leave here.” She admitted quietly as she gently rubbed his chest with her thumb.

Charles’ eyes brightened as she laughed, a grin decorating his face. He couldn’t help it. When Rose laughed, he either smiled or laughed with her. It was contagious. But his smile faltered a little when she said she was thinking of leaving camp one day. He brought his smile back on his face in a matter of seconds, although it was more forced this time. Hopefully she wouldn’t notice, “I didn’t realise you ever thought about leaving camp,” He said quietly. Charles hadn’t thought about it at all. He hardly remembered a life outside of this place.

“Looks like you better watch out then, pretty boy.”

“Could say the same to you,” He paused and furrowed his brow, “Pretty boy? Really?”

Her hazel eyes widened and she blushed faintly. He wasn’t wrong. She did love it. “If that helps you sleep at night.” she teased as she looked up at him with a smile and almost commented on the blush but didn’t as she nodded. “I think you’ll be able to rest for a day. I’ll make sure no one bothers you.” she promised him as her heart sped up. “I’d love that too. We could spend a weekend there and I’m sure that monsters won’t follow us there. They don’t like Ireland all that much.”

“It does,” Charles said with a wicked grin. He seemed to only legitimately smile around Rose. She had this way of helping him forget about everything wrong in his life, “I would very much appreciate that,” His heart raced at her next words, unable to stop the smile, “I’m sure if it’s as rainy as I hear it is then they won’t bother us,” He joked and then asked, “Why Ireland?”

“I’ve been here for ten years so I think I would have noticed by now if it turned pink in the right light. You’ve clearly walked past it under the influence of something.”

Rose rolled her eyes but she smiled at him. She knew alright and she also knew that he never listened when she did tell him that he needed to stay still. “Always on the go.” She patted his chest and smiled again. “So if you rest for a few days, we could? We could stay with some of my family there for a day or so.” She suggested as she thought about it. It would be wonderful if they did and then there would just be them.

“I know you secretly love that about me, Rose,” Charles teased, tracing a finger along her bare arm. It was a subconscious movement and as soon as he realized he was doing it, he moved his hand away. He felt a blush creeping up on his neck, hoping that she wouldn’t think anything of the action, “I would have to rest for about a day afterwards. Shadow travel makes you sleepy,” He paused, “But I’d love that,” He whispered.

“Well, you’re right about that. But you know, sometimes, in the right light, the cabin turns a little pink. It gets a little confusing.”
