MANGA: The Pre-History of Japanese Comics

“The influence of manga on international comics has grown considerably over the past two decades. The origins of manga can be traced back to the Edo Period of Japanese history (1600-1868), specifically to popular type of books using ukiyo-e, or Japanese woodblock prints. These early manga books contained humorous content and featured humans, fantastical creatures and even references to celebrities of the period. As literacy rose in Japan throughout the 18th century (during the Edo Period) and into the 19th and early 20th Century (during the Meiji Period), this kind of illustrated novel became popular; it is from here that we actually see the first recorded use of the term “manga” to describe a words-and-picture-based story. This title features foundational works of manga dating from the 17th to the early 20th century and presented in chronological order. It is a great resource for graphic designers and comic book artists. Japanese art lovers will also find some great works by well-known ukiyo-e artists such as Kuniyoshi Utagawa, Hokusai Katsushika and Yoshitoshi Tsukioka.” - Buy Now

Este año ha sido muy particular, he ofendido a la gente por hacerle gratis el diseño de producción de sus eventos, por bromear sobre gustos gastronómicos, por apoyar a una artista local, por pedir que trabajen con seriedad, peor aún por decisiones que están fuera de mi control.

Aun no acaba el año y muchas personas que consideraba amigos cercanos y que admiraba simplemente han pasado a ser sombras en mi mundo. Algunos aún los admiro profesionalmente, pero como personas simplemente no tengo intención alguna de relacionarme; no porque sean malvados o me desagraden, simplemente no tengo paciencia para los dramas innecesarios, y porque tampoco me interesa bajar al estándar de vivir cumpliendo expectativas ajenas.

Por otro lado muchas otras personas han demostrado que son gente de fiar, tienen ideas y propuestas nuevas y que hay la semilla de un mundo menos oscuro. Espero en estos meses recuperar suficiente viscosidad para seguir adelante y no dejarme caer al hoyo.

and you maybe acquainted with the night, but I have seen the darkness in the day, and you must know how it is a terrifying sight, because you and I are living the same way....

My biggest and most detailed watercolor painting to date is called Eden. It was inspired by one of my favourite paintings that is Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. Eden is about 75cm x 25cm, and it took several months to create from a light pencil sketch to a full colour painting. Please feel free to order a print here!
