What is a Chochin Obake? Ever since living in Japan, I’ve wanted to bring a bit more of the Japanese spirit of Halloween into my decorations
Last Halloween, I posted a picture of a Chochin Obake that I made, and I really wanted to create a DIY guide so you could make your own. Well, a year later, here it is!
I've been illustrating the girls from House (1977) with limited palettes because the iconography in that film is very fun and it is spooky season after all. Enjoy some doomed teens and a very evil Auntie!

目立つ means “to stand out,” or “to attract attention.” It refers to something or someone catching the eye, often due to appearance, actions, or behavior.
これで私が町で一番目立つ女よ ‘Kore de watashi ga machi de ichiban medatsu onna yo’ “Now, I am the most noticeable woman in town.”
彼の派手な服はとても目立つ。 ’Kare no hade na fuku wa totemo medatsu.’ His flashy clothes really stand out.
あの看板は大きすぎて、遠くからでも目立つ。 ’Ano kanban wa ookisugite, tooku kara demo medatsu.’ That sign is so big that it stands out even from a distance.
背が高いので、どこにいても目立つ。 ’Se ga takai node, doko ni ite mo medatsu.’ Because I’m tall, stands out wherever she is.
この色の靴はあまり目立たない ’Kono iro no kutsu wa amari medatanai ’ These shoes don’t stand out much

根に持つ - “to hold a grudge”
The phrase 根に持っている (ne ni motte iru) means “to hold a grudge” . 根 : “Root” symbolizing something deep-rooted, like feelings or emotions. 持っている: “Holding” or “having.”
いつまで根に持ってんだよくそばばあ ‘Itsu made ne ni mottenndayo kusobaba-’ “How long are you going to hold a grudge, you hag?”
昔のことを根に持たないで、前に進もうよ。 ’Mukashi no koto o ne ni motanaide, mae ni susumou yo.’ Don’t hold a grudge about the past, let’s move forward.
彼女は私が言った冗談を根に持っているみたいだ。 ’Kanojo wa watashi ga itta joudan o ne ni motte iru mitai da.’ It seems like she’s holding a grudge over the joke I made.
何年も前のことをまだ根に持っているなんて信じらない。 ’Nannen mo mae no koto o mada ne ni motte iru nante shinjirarenai.’ I can’t believe you’re still holding a grudge over something that happened years ago.
地縛霊 - “restless spirit” “earthbound spirit”
The term 地縛霊 (jibakurei) refers to a “restless spirit” or “earthbound spirit” in Japanese folklore.The 地 (ji) means “earth” or “ground,” and 縛 (baku) means “to bind,” while 霊 (rei) means “spirit” or “ghost.”
地縛霊って知ってるか？ ‘Jibakurei tte shitteru ka’ “Do you know Jibakurei?”
地縛霊 is believed to be a ghost or spirit bound to a specific location due to unresolved feelings, trauma, or unfinished business from when they were alive.
この古い建物には地縛霊がいるという噂がある。 ’Kono furui tatemono ni wa jibakurei ga iru to iu uwasa ga aru.’ There’s a rumor that an earthbound spirit haunts this old building.
彼らはその場所で死んだので、地縛霊として残っているらしい。 ’Karera wa sono basho de shinda node, jibakurei toshite nokotte iru rashii.’ It seems they died in that place and remain as earthbound spirits.

[Yesterday’s] (and bonus #yokaitober) is Tsukumogami! Specifically Chochin Obake the paper lanturn and Kasa Obake the paper umbrella. They’re both made of paper! That must be why they’re friends.

いい加減にして - Enough already/ Give me a break
The phrase いい加減にして (ii kagen ni shite) にして implies the person has gone too far, and you’re asking them to stop whatever they’re doing because it’s no longer acceptable.
いい加減にして ‘Iikagen ni shite’ “That’s enough.”
いい加減, the idea is to do something to a reasonable or appropriate degree, as in “Don’t overdo it” or “Get a grip.” In this expression, 加減 refers to moderation
いい加減にしてくれないと、本当に怒るよ。 ’Ii kagen ni shite kurenai to, hontō ni okoru yo.’ If you don’t cut it out, I’m really going to get mad.
いい加減にして！これ以上騒ぐと追い出される ’Ii kagen ni shite! Kore ijō sawagu to oidasareru.’ Stop! If you keep making fuss, you’re gonna be kicked out.
彼の嘘にはもううんざりだ。いい加減にしてほしい。 ’Kare no uso ni wa mō unzari da. Ii kagen ni shite hoshii.’ I’m fed up with his lies. I want him to stop it already.
～てくれない？ “won’t you?～”
くれない？ (kurenai?) literally means “won’t you?” but is commonly used to make polite requests in an informal or friendly manner.
ちょっと私の顔見てくれない？ ‘Chotto watashi no kao mite kurenai?’ “Can you look at my face for a second?”
くれない gives the sentence a polite and soft request tone, making it feel like a favour the speaker is kindly asking for, rather than a direct or strong request.
ドアを閉めてくれない？ ’Doa o shimete kurenai?’ Can you close the door for me?
ペンを貸してくれない？ ’Pen o kashite kurenai?’ Can you lend me a pen?
その本を取ってくれない？ ’Sono hon o totte kurenai?’ Can you get that book for me?
写真を撮ってくれない？ ’Shashin o totte kurenai?’ Can you take a picture for me?
いったい - “what on earth” “what the heck”
一体 (ittai) adds a sense of urgency or emphasis, like “on earth,” “exactly,” or “what the heck.” It shows that the speaker is puzzled or baffled by something.
あれは一体何なんだ ‘Are wa ittai nan nan da’ “What on earth is that?”
一体何が起こったの？ ’Ittai nani ga okotta no? What on earth happened?
田中くんは一体どこに行ったんだ？ ’Tanaka kun wa ittai doko ni itta nda? Where on earth did Tanaka go?
一体誰がそんなことを言ったんだ？ ’Ittai dare ga sonna koto o itta nda?’ Who in the world said such a thing?
一体いつになったら終わるんだ？ ’Ittai itsu ni nattara owarun da?’ When on earth will this be finished?
ゴロッ(goro): “A roll/thud” (a single instance)ゴロゴロ(gorogoro): “Rolling/rumbling/idling” (continuous or repeated)
Here are a few more examples of how to use ゴロ・ゴロゴロ.
大きな石がゴロッと転がった。 ’Ookina ishi ga goro tto korogatta.’ A large stone rolled with a thud. 家でゴロゴロしている。 ’Iede gorogoro siteiru’ I’m just lazing around at home. 雷がゴロゴロ鳴っている。 ’Kaminari ga gorogoro natteiru.’ The thunder is rumbling.
