4 Content Marketing Tips for Small Businesses
1) Share your content on social media.
Your campaign needs to infiltrate these social networking sites: Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Instagram. By sharing on those social media platforms you can create and claim your business page, attract followers and subscribers, and join relevant groups to share your content to their community.
Tip: Followers on Twitter become more emotionally connected to the business, and are more likely to become loyal customers.
2) Build your personal brand.
The author of your articles or blogs increases the value and integrity of your content. If you happen to be the author of your blog, you can increase your credibility by insuring that you are an expert in your topic. Be sure to write a blog, comment on other people’s blogs, and build a web site.
3) Create an eBook
An eBook is quality information that you have already written that people can use to make their lives better. This information can be what you used to help friends, clients, or methods you used to achieve great results. Your ideas/information might be the next bestselling eBook out there, so what are you waiting for?
4) Stay ahead on SEO
The key to a friendly social media profile is to always fill out the about/information sections that describe your business. Don’t forget to fill the category field, because this is important for social media software like Facebook. One of the most overlooked tools to increase your businesses SEO is Google+. Think about it, no one else loves Google+ more than Google, so use that to your advantage. Spend 15 minutes a day on your Google+ page and on Google+ local listings, and you will be top in their search engine results page (SERP).
What are MOOCS and Why You Should Care
By Rafael Moreno || @rmorenocesar
With the rapidly rising cost for attending college, and the appeal of dropping out early to take a chance at the startup biz in hopes of making it big like the Facebook’s and Youtube’s of our time, people wonder how much they really value a university education. MOOC’s, which stands for Massively Open Online Courses, which is a relatively new trend, will be a very realistic alternative to a traditional in person college education.
The concept of a MOOC is simple, provide as many people in as many regions of the world, access to the world’s most top notch courses, free of cost, accessible whenever you want. As you can see in the figure above, Coursera, one of the companies at the head of the MOOC revolution, offers hundreds of courses given at the top universities in the world that people can take for free online, and now for a much lower cost than it would by enrolling in a university, it offers a certificate of achievement for successfully completing certain courses on the platform. Even colleges such as Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and MIT, have online courses that you can log on and watch for free at any given point in time. Although, for the most part, besides the avid learner who thrives to quench their thirst for knowledge, this might not really be as useful for people who are seeking to increase their employ ability by trying to simulate getting an actual college degree, it does offer some precedence for people seeking alternatives in the future.
As of recent, even colleges like Georgia Tech have announced that they will have a full online Computer Science Masters Program for which you can complete at a tuition rate of 7,000 dollars for the entire program. Right now you can use them for learning for fun, and in some cases get a nice certificate of mastery out of it, but in the future, if schools keep offering degrees in the form of MOOC’s, then they may mostly replace the traditional college education.
Why you should learn to code
By Rafael Moreno || @rmorenocesar
You can reach out to the world in the blink of an eye
If you’re starting a restaurant, leading a non-profit campaign, hosting an event, and you’re busy making flyers and posters to let people know about it, you could have reached 10x the amount of people, with much less effort. Build yourself a website and promote that on the internet. It’s super easy to get started and you’ll feel good with a visual representation of your hard work on the web.
You become a problem solver
Whether you learn through formal education in a classroom setting, or are a self-taught programmer, you develop a set of critical thinking skills that very few people have. Actual coding is not that hard, and those of us that have begun the struggle know that when it comes down to hiring, it does not always come down to who are the best coders, but who are the best problem solvers. That’s one of the reasons programmers are also sought out for financial positions as well as just software, because those companies know they are heavy analytical and critical thinkers.
3. There’s an app for that because you made it
If you want to create something, you can do it, if you see a problem that needs fixing, you can do that as well. You don’t need to do it as a full-time job. Just a hobby on the side is enough as long as you can share it with everyone.
4 You’ll be able to better understand some of today’s major trends
Snapchat Hack? You got it. Facebook buying everyone? Also got it. NSA creeping on everything? You understand what’s going on there as well. Being interested in programming helps with emerging yourself in the technology culture, and learning about some topics that are not so important, AKA Snapchat/Facebook, but still interesting, and also the more significant stuff, AKA NSA Edward Snowden ordeals.
If none of these have you convince, then I leave you with this final quote from Dave Fontenot, the founder of MHacks, “Show someone what they can build, and you won’t be able to stop them from learning how to code.”
We're a content curating & sharing software. Designed for small businesses and internet marketers, we've put high emphasis on simplicity. Let us know if you like it, @chimpmint.
Sites For Being Productive While Being Unproductive
By: Rafael Moreno (@rmorenocesar)
Everyone does it. For whatever reason, we do anything, but what we are supposed to be doing, and with today’s technologies, the distractions are endless. When you’re at work, class, studying, eating, you have your phone, computer, maybe a tablet, and access to anything and everything you could ever desire on the web, instead of spending your time stalking you friends on Facebook, here’s a list of unrelated work/study things you can be doing that will still be worth your time, in no particular order or rank:
Any technology blog
Sites like Tech Crunch, Wired, Engadget, and any site dedicated to posting about the newest tech trends is a really good resource for keeping up with what’s going on in the technology world. You can learn about anything from the up and coming startups and gadgets, to conferences and huge meet ups that are going around in your area. These are invaluable for anyone trying to stay in the loop or people who are just finding their niche in the industry.
Google+
Many people don’t know this, because Google’s used to be irrelevant social network is just barely starting to pick up, but there’s more to that Google account you created than just sending email. Google+ has communities dedicated solely to specific programming languages, exercising, interview tips, and anything else that adds value to your life professionally or socially and health wise. Spend time on there to find groups you think you might be able to get something useful out of browse their posts, and even post your own with related content. Who knows, you might even get a following.
Job Posting sites. My favorite, internmatch.com
For those college students looking for internships, there is an endless list of sites that have job and internship postings, but one of my favorite features of this site, is the interviewing and career tips that they have. For even the most outgoing and social people, a lot of an interview is practice, and looking at possible questions that might pop up. They also go through resume and networking tips as well. Now if you’re someone that doesn’t need to look for a new job, look through the posts anyways. Keeping up with what employers are looking for in their young new workers helps you have a leg up, and makes sure that you don’t get left behind.
Instructables.com
Instructables is a DIY (Do It Yourself) website that has projects that range from creating a speaker using paper plates, to how to create a downhill snowbike, all with materials that are easy to find and are accessible. If you want to learn to do something new. These projects help you explore your creative side, and possibly get out and active, depending on what you decide to do.
Coursera
Coursera is a platform that offers free online classes from premier universities across the world. You sign up for courses from Rice, Stanford, Harvard, University of Waterloo and many more, and although they do have deadlines that are recommended that you meet, you do not necessarily need to have the pressure of meeting it and flustering your learning pace. If you gain all the knowledge you were looking for, and completely understand the content when you’re finished, then you essentially got everything you needed to get out of it. When you’re not getting a GPA that affects whether you get a job or scholarships, it changes the way, and how much, you want to learn.
Just in case you didn’t catch the gist of it, never stop learning. If you never stop learning, then you never get old.
A beginning coder's guide to their first Hackathons
By Rafael Moreno
So I've been to a few hackathons, and people I talk to seem enthralled by my recap of everything that happened and how awesome it seems like it might be, but the biggest comment that I get while I’m talking to someone is, “I don’t know how to code”.
There are two types of people who will ask me this question. 1. is someone who has zero experience with technology whatsoever, besides the usage of their smartphone (probs an iPhone), but are very interested in learning, and 2. is someone who just began learning to code and has nothing but that first C++/Java intro class under their belt. This list was made to help both types of people get started, and get the most out of a hackathon.
1. You don't need to code at a hackathon Now you definitely need to have a team that has people who can code, but you don't need to be one of them. Coming up with a useful project involves many more things than just coding. The design, the idea, the presentation, that one guy who keeps everybody sane at 4 in the morning on the second day. There are SO many things that come into play that aren't coding related. I've seen teams go up as finalists, to demo their hacks that had a psychology major as a member. I was on a team once, where we won first place, and the person who came up with the idea, did the presentation, and decided what our final logo would be, wrote zero lines of code. That win would not have happened without her.
2. Everyone starts off as a beginner, so ask questions Developing for Android is completely different than developing for iOS. Maybe you started learning PHP for web dev, but now you want to switch to Ruby on Rails. Even those people who are seniors in your major that have just gone through the curriculum, and never touched on these before will start off basically on the same level as you. If you've taken the intro class you're set, if you've never coded in your life, read up on the basics, types, loops, etc., and use the hackathon to learn how they work and get started on something. Before the hackathon actually starts, research what you want to develop for and download all the necessary tools. I've had times where I've gone in cold turkey and taken about 5 hours, along with my team, to get everything set up since we ran into issues that had nothing to do with our actual project. Remember, if you get stuck on something, ask! It’s a great way to talk to the mentor’s at the event, or any of the software engineers representing their companies.
3. No matter what, demo your hack You might go into a hackathon thinking your about to make a social app that does this and that, and your going to sell it to Google for millions of dollars. Well you only have 24 hours, so at a certain point you may want to scale it down if you feel like your pressed for time and aren't where you want to be yet. Remember though, always submit/demo your app. Go up there, and even though you may have only built a small interface and a sign in screen, go ahead and tell people what it was supposed to be. You'd be surprised at how many people will be just as impressed with your idea and what you tried to accomplish, than someone who finished making a "Snake" game in HTML5.
4. Build your network You don't have to be hacking the whole time. You're in an area where there is a culmination of like minded, self driven individuals who are just as passionate and enthusiastic about this as you are. Take the time to go around and meet some of them. Ask them about what they are building, or where they're from. Everyone enjoys talking a little bit about themselves, and these people are the ones who will be working at Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, and any company you can possibly think of, one day. A hackathon is also like a miniature career fair. There are also, most likely, a few company engineers and recruiters that helped sponsor the event. Take the time to ask these people about what they do, ideas, where they're from, etc. Getting to know these people especially helps for getting jobs and internships. You will most likely see a lot of them at other hackathons as well.
5. Keep your hack, and work on it later Even if you finished what you set off to create, like I mentioned before, there's only so much you could have done with it in 24 hours. Work on it after the hackathon, and add it to your resume. There's nothing tech companies like seeing more than side projects you've taken the initiative to work on outside of class. You're already a step up by going to the hackathon, so get that added bonus by building on top of your hack.

SXSW is Today!
Today is the first day of Interactive South by South West! SXSW is a place for great live music and for people to see the newest technology that entrepreneurs from all over the world have to offer. While it is nerve wrecking to see your product have issues from the large amount of coverage you’re getting at the time, we are pumped as it is our first time showcasing our technology to many new and interested people.
Twitter is known as having the most successful presentation at SXSW to this day. In 2007 Twitter used their funding to change the entire event with “a visualization of the service on flat-panel screens in the hallways.”
Hosting a booth is not easy and requires a lot of preparation. We spent over a week setting up and promoting ourselves to get people even more motivated and excited. From the event we will have the opportunity to talk to more investors and small business owners.
One of the hardest aspects is managing social media. I have to work offline to promote to the people around and interested, at the same time people around the area are interested and need to know we are here. Being where the customer is hard especially when they are in multiple places, fortunately ChimpMint is here to save the day!
I am able to prepare my social media so I can focus on talking to the people around me. In fact, I used ChimpMint to post this article when the most people are listening.

Prank Advertising
By: Kelsey Starr
The funniest way to market your product is to have your competitor market it for you.
Even better if you can make it go viral.
Watch this video. It’s actually the one of the better things I’ve seen on the internet for a while. DHL, who has been considerably low on the scale of delivery services of choice, decided to have a little fun with their competition. I don’t really need to explain it, it kind of speaks for itself.
What I love about this is that it’s so simple. Usually, people feel advertising has to be big and elaborate to get attention. Yet, the reality is the total opposite. Just look at Beyonce’s latest album release. She didn’t have to do anything!
This prank is fun and harmless. If anything, DHL’s competition got paid to advertise them a little bit. So you could almost consider this a win-win, no?
Viral advertising has to be simple. Complicated stuff isn’t easy to spread or share. Viral advertising also has to be fun. No one will Snapchat a billboard anymore. Pranks are always going to be fun, especially harmless ones. People will share pranks, and share them quickly.
That being said, it would be hard for an accounting firm to do something funny to their other competitors in a similar way, because they're less visible. But that shouldn't stop you! Be creative, see what gets you noticed, and most of all—have fun!
Time Management
By: Maurice Prosper
As a college student, nothing is as important as time management. We are busy and constantly being loaded with new tasks to do, it seems never ending. On top of that, adding entrepreneur on to the list means that much of the leisure and sleep are removed from the equation. This brings the idea of time management where one will plan or schedule their day and provide enough opportunity to each activity to complete the daily goals for the tasks.
Sticking to a schedule is tough; it requires a lot of self determination. People can easily let themselves down because they base their life on their own intentions. To make it actually work you should make a list of your daily goals and share it with friends and family. This will motivate you, because it is much more difficult to let others down.
One of the hassles of time management is actually writing down and keeping a log of all the activities you do for the day, you are a busy person and have no time to be writing things you can keep in your head. However, maybe the most overlooked reason for writing down your activities is to analyze and optimize the events for the future.
Your mission is to keep a log of all the things you do for just a week. You will find some places to improve your daily time spent and be an overall more productive person.
3 Ways To Use Social Media To Grow Your Small Business
By: Marc Guberti
Social media is a powerful tool that people are using to build an awareness for their products, blogs, and services. However, social media also does a remarkable job at building an awareness for small businesses. Small businesses have been using social media to connect with others, build a following, and make more sales. In order to use social media to grow your small business, follow these three tips:
1. Follow people your targeted audience who are likely to follow back. This will allow you to build connections with potential customers and get more followers as well. We like to gravitate towards people who are popular, and by making your number of targeted followers larger while getting good engagement from those followers will make more people want to follow you.
2. Have conversations with your followers. A follower you have a conversation with can turn into your next customer. Many of the sales of my products started out as conversations on Twitter. Then, the conversation developed, the person I was talking to gave my blog a look, and then decided to buy one of my products.
3. Connect with your followers on multiple social networks. You will be able to build the strongest connections that are made to stick when you follow your followers on multiple social networks. If you see that one of your Twitter followers is also on Instagram, follow that person on Instagram as well. The more you show up, the more conversations you will have with your followers.
By implementing these three tips, you will be able to build a powerful presence as a small business. Social media is a powerful tool that allows small businesses to get free traffic and sales. Your small business doesn't have to be in an ad in order to get more sales and visibility. Instead, your small business needs to use social networks to build quality connections with the right people.
