How do you define pansexual?

i love love loooove when people make up these arbitrary rules for bisexuality based on absolutely fucking nothing like "uh actually bisexual is when you care about looks" and "bisexuals have a preference while pansexuals don't!" me thinks you people need to go outside and like. have a face to face conversation with someone. i think that's the issue here.

do y'all realize that the shit you're saying about bisexuality is biphobic... you're saying that bisexuals are shallow and we only care about looks and we have preferences and can't possibly have equal attraction to other genders etc. like y'all paint pansexuality as this haven with that hearts not parts bullshit which just makes bisexuality look restrictive in comparison... i'm fucking sick of it! y'all are making up all these rules for bisexuality that never fucking existed in the first place just to paint pansexuality as more woke and progressive... literally go chew on fucking glass.

first off this is true and i agree, the arguments around bi vs pan are dumb, all the restrictions we put on different parts of the queer community are dumb!!! its not supposed to be like that, we r missing the whole point!!

i like to identify as pan (and agender), i started doing so 7 years ago. for me personally, i believe it initially had something to do with all my preconceptions about bisexuality, because like every time id seen someone explain it they worded it as “i like boys AND girls!” “i swing BOTH ways/play for BOTH teams!” “im 70% attracted to boys, 30% to girls” etc etc. which felt restrictive, to me especially because i am also agender

if u look into it (which i highly recommend), the history of the word pansexual is interesting. seeing how people gradually co-opted the term out of a desire to be more free and verbally inclusive in a time of sex and gender exploration is really cool! it kinda reminds you that we’re on the same side, and makes me really enjoy my continued use of the term. tho i don’t necessarily love its origins 💀💀

im not totally sure if this is new but i feel that recently people have started to try and correct the language around being bisexual, intentionally saying, for example, “bisexuality means i love ALL genders!” which i think is great!!

all the reading ive done on the origins of pansexuality do not indicate thats how it started. non-binary, two-spirit and other genderqueer identities are not new and, to my knowledge, heavily influenced the growth of pansexuality as an identity

The kink term was hijacked by a teenager in the early 2000s who defined it as "attraction to men, women, trans people, and gender nonconforming people." She posted the definition to a J-rock-themed LiveJournal, because she thought that bisexuals couldn't be attracted to androgynous people like the J-rockers.

this was a powerful teenager huh, singlehandedly hijacking the term (lol) but again yes, like I wrote before a lot of youth tend to understand the term bisexual to be exclusive of gender non-conforming identities simply because of how the term bisexual is presented to them by popular culture, etc etc. I personally wish more people outside of the kink community understood the definition of pansexual to be consistent with the kink term but, ah well. the evolution of language is difficult to intentionally influence (and the queer kink community still understands <3)

And yes, the modern use of pansexuality as ‘attraction regardless of gender‘ had its roots in that pansexual LiveJournal page. That’s where it got ‘mainstream‘ attention as far as the internet goes. You can still access that page and see dozens of bisexuals changing their identity to pansexual because of the definition spread by that page. Now, it’s possible that there are factors that aren’t documented on the internet (I’ve heard older people talk about pamphlets being spread. and that the culture back then essentially said you needed to identify as pansexual if you wanted to signal to trans people that you were ‘safe’).

Saying it was a kink term first isn’t technically true, as the kink term has a different history and usage than the term used for the sexuality.

kind of fucked up to reduce discussions of biphobia to “q*eer discourse” and how we moved past that in 2016 so people should just let it go. talking about how pansexuality has harmed real people in the bisexual community is not just dumb internet discourse. it’s perpetuated endless biphobia and led to a false definition of bisexuality while pan people steal the real definition for themselves. when bisexuals speak up about how pansexuality is doing real harm we’re not being mean because we think pan people don’t belong in the lgbt community and they should be kicked out (they do belong, just under the bi label). this isn’t about exclusionism. we’re talking about how the mainstream perception in media and real life has led to a fundamental misunderstanding of bisexuality and set us back by years, if not decades, after all the work historical activists have done to end stereotypes about bisexual people. pansexuality has perpetuated misconceptions about us that non-bi people ignore even when we correct them because apparently, everyone is allowed to define bisexuality their own way except for bisexuals.

Bisexual literally means two OR more. A bisexual person can be attracted to men and women. Men and nonbinary people. Etc. Any combination.

Pan means all.

It is not a reflection on bisexuality. Words have different meanings as time goes on and we have to look at how people vastly use it now. Which is like that.

Every pansexual person fits the definition of bisexual by default, but they do not identify as bisexual and that's important. Lots of bisexual people fit the definition of pansexual too, but their bisexuality is not less valid because of it.

That's like asking a bi person, "well gay people like the same gender/sex so why don't you just call yourself gay instead of bi"

Where do I even start with this? Is it the sexism that implies that men are somehow limiting a woman’s sexuality if she doesn’t use the pansexual label? Or is it the ignoring the political movement behind bisexuality that is already striving for all of these things, and replacing it arbitrarily with another term after asserting that bisexuality doesn’t accept trans people?
