Relic Hunt

Time reversal was a curious thing. She had felt her soul slipping away when suddenly, visions from the past and perhaps the future flashed before her eyes as she was pulled back into safety. Battle wounds began to close up and the last thing she felt was the death of her enemy springing her back to life.

Soon, Jetista found herself face-to-face with the Archmage, seemingly awestruck by the immense power emanating from him. His eyes were so blue she couldn’t help but be lost in his piercing gaze for a moment.

Jetista’s stupor was broken by a feral roar from behind her. With both hands now wielding daggers coated with lethal venom, she responded with a lopsided smirk and a hasty nod of thanks at Khadgar. 

“It’s an honour to fight alongside you, Sir. Allow me to distract them while you lead your soldiers out of here.”

The protective shield of arcane energy had certainly given her the boost she needed to fight off these brutes for the second time and Jetista had never been so motivated to fight for anyone before.

“Ready when you are!”

Khadgar didn't lose his focus; perhaps if an army of power thirsty, berserk orcs didn't wait for the perfect opportunity to slit their throats wasn't present, he would ask the young elf more questions or even wonder why she seemed to be not taking her bright eyes away from him for a few moments before listening to this orders. Part of him knew that it was his all powerful, knowledgeable gaze. His aged appearance finally was starting to deteriorating, but even though he was still considered young, he definitely saw a lot. He almost lost count of how many times he stood in front of the Dark Portal by now.

“A distraction is exactly what we need”, he replied to the elf, giving him a mischievous smirk; the time allowed him to do so, even though they really needed to retreat. “However, you shall fall back and leave that to me. Stop anyone who will try to come forward, I must finish this spell without being interrupted, am I clear?”, he asked her, the shield that protected them taking hits from the volleys of arrows coming from the back of the Iron Horde army.

“We will be vulnerable for just a few moments right before I finish the spell, make sure that we are safe”, he emphasized, even though he could spot Cordana from the corner of his eyes, ready to jump in if she was needed. She was too protective over him, which both complimented and frustrated him. His eyes were fixed on a large piece of rock that happened to be dangerously close to the back of the Horde, where many of the strange machinery that Garrosh brought with him were based. Uttering his powerful words, he let his guard down for just a moment before causing the rocks to fall, crashing some of the machines. 

“Quick! Fall back into the jungle! NOW!”

“I can imagine, our occupation can be quite troublesome at times. It is why I ended up with a curse in the first place. But it was for the greater good, I must say.”

“Particularly prone to fire, I see. If you ever need any further training in other kinds of magic, my door is always open. I’ve been...trained by the best.”

The staff is what originally catches his eye, but upon closer inspection Vivi perceives an almost overwhelming aura of sorts about the man, as if his magical energy is radiating outwards in concentric circles, each representing an element diligently mastered. A tell-tale sign of a seasoned mage, no doubt, yet Vivi still feels compelled to ask.

“Are you a mage?” 

The question is out before he even realizes it - nerves, most likely, with an unmistakeable hint of excitement. Wordlessly, Vivi raises a palm and a ball of fire crackles to life, a few embers drifting upwards before fizzling out into nothing. Truth be told, the weak fire spell is all he’s managed to cast since finding himself in the city, and he can’t help but feel a sense of dread at the thought of having lost the rest of his magical repertoire.  

But, perhaps this mage might have some answers? Some magical wisdom to impart on a fellow practitioner of the art? Vivi looks at the man expectantly, the flames continuing to greedily lick the air.

The voice came from a little creature, much smaller than him. That wasn't a child, the proportions just didn't seem right, so the next thing that came to Khadgar’s mind was either a tall gnome or a dwarf. He couldn't exactly tell, the large hat and most likely a black mouthpiece or cover of some sort was blacking the mysterious figure’s features.

“That is correct, and you- ah, I see!”

It was exciting, to see more people in that city, able to manipulate that kind of magic was comforting. He met a few people already, and this was the second magic user he encountered, it started to feel more at home. He couldn't use his own magic as much as he wanted, but he was still able to summon fire a few times per day, and he used his last one for the day to show the little creature that he could also do that. Without a doubt, he could also sense the potential of him, clearly limited by the city’s authorities.  

“Apologies of my question offends you but... I've never came across to any of your kind in my journeys, what are you...?”

“True,” the hooded sorcerer replied with a cant of his head in affirmation of what the other had said. Medivh did not lower his hood as asked and had no intentions of revealing his face to this man who resembled someone close to him. Something was wrong with his presence being here and he was certain it had something to do with the orcs being so well armed and technologically advanced since the last time he had communed with Gul’dan.

He took a hand from his greatstaff and opened the fingers in a gesture that meant nothing more than to emphasize his words. “Except you should not be here at all. The portal is damaged and yet there are humans and other races of Azeroth here on a world that should never have had them or even know that this world exists. The Kingdom of Stormwind has a garrison not far from here with kaldorei that should have never seen a human before guarding its gates.”

His gloved hand gestured at the older looking sorcerer. “So I will ask you again, why are you here, Young Trust.” He was positive that this man was his apprentice and if he was wrong, than at least a very close relative of the boy. The resemblance was uncanny despite the large age difference between the two, and if he really was the boy than how could he be here as an old wizard and still be on Azeroth working on the library as a young boy?

The sorcerer before him had answers and he was determined to get them by any means necessary.

The fact that the stranger who Khadgar knew who it was didn’t lower his hood didn’t go unnoticed. The whole secrecy between them was always present, and it was almost sad to see that it was left unchanged despite being in a complete different timeline.In a way, this could be a good chance for him to get some answers to questions that he never got answered, but sometimes his last encounters with the Medivh he knew plainly haunted him. He felt like a stranger in his own body for years because of him.

“One of ours, an orc from Nagrand, former Warchief of the Horde is responsible for this breach to the portal and many..unfortunate events that unfolded. The Portal is now shut, we simply cannot allow the Iron Horde to march into Azeroth, this would be so much more catastrophic since you opened the Portal for the very first time.”

And then he heard it, the name that he haven’t heard in years. Young Trust. Only Medivh ever called him that, and if that wasn't the Medivh that he knew.. he surely recognised him, despite the curse that he put on him. “I came here, my duty was to stop this orc, Garrosh, from using his knowledge to destroy our world with the help from the Iron Horde. They acknowledged the fact that my expertise to Dark Portal matters was the perfect qualification for this position, all thanks to you, Master. However, your associate, Gul’dan, the warlock, is causing me more grief that he ever did before.”

He wasn’t going to lie, he immediately got flashbacks of practicing spells and trying to summon thoe visions back in Karazhan’s library, knowing that his Master was away, hoping that he wouldn’t show up in silence, furious.

This was quite possibly the first time Lor’themar had actually been caught off-guard in the city, and he blinked stupidly. As much as Khadgar didn’t look like what he remembered, that voice, the aura he exuded… it was all still the same. Still the same man he knew, the friend he knew.

“It was… an unfortunate event,” he snorted, lips curling into a bitter smile. Of course, that was an understatement; he’d been broken by the knowledge of what had transpired in Outland. “But thank you, regardless. It’s been quite some time, Khadgar, how have you been faring? I see I have much to catch up on, friend.”

Anything to spend some time with someone he trusted.

It sure was a relief to see that his old friend recognised him, not yet questioning his aged appearance. As he leaded the expedition in Dreanor, he didn’t expect the Sin’dorei Lord to wait for him by the Dark Portal on his own, even though he closely worked with Lady Liadrin instead. A lot of catching up would need to occur, especially since Khadgar spent a good few years in Outland, away from Azeroth.

“I’m not happy to be away from Draenor, no, I don’t want to leave anyone to face Gul’dan alone. And just when I thought that we were getting enough power...”, he shook his head. “Yes, my friend, that expedition is, or was, taking a lot of my time and energy. How about you? Is everything alight in Silvermoon? I had to ask about the nature of your relationship with Lady Sylvanas. ”

“Ah, Lord Lor’themar, I believe congratulations are in order, old friend. Even if that means that the old Prince is...well, not around here anymore”, Khadgar greeted the elf, giving him a polite nod. He hoped that he would recognise him, after all, he did look quite different from when they first encountered each other, fighting side by side.

Khadgar nodded, relieved to see that the elf was fit to battle once again, turning his attention to the men.

“Fall back! The Portal is shutting down!”, he yelled, the ground trembling below them.

“Are you sure? Stay behind, you just got back, elf, I cannot use the same spell on you so soon if something happens to you again”, he pointed out, gritting his teeth as one orc attempted to breach the arcane barrier, flying back a few food meters upon doing so.

He didn’t notice her pause and her staring at him, he was too focused on his duties, trying to keep the majority of the men and women safe, as well as fight off the hordes that kept coming. Looking behind his shoulder, he sighed i relief as he saw the colour of the portal flickering, switching colours.

“We are nearly there, we will fall back into the Jungle as soon as the Portal is shut!”

The forest of Shadowmoon Valley were dark and ominous, very little light of Draenor’s sun could penetrate the thick canopies overhead. The howl of a worg echoed off in the distance as a black raven observed a lone figure walking along a well worn path. The crimson eyes blinked as the raven canted it’s head to the side at the familiarity of the blue robed and leather clad sorcerer. It recognized the dark greatstaff he used as a walking stick and wondered how the man obtained such a powerful relic.

With a caw and a flap of it’s wings, the raven glided down from its perch atop of a shaman stone that was half buried in underbrush and intrusive vines, forgotten by the Shadowmoon orcs as they turned to the darkness in the night sky. It circled overhead, crying for attention before coming lower. The crimson eyes blinking and head turning as something shimmered in the dark nearby but it paid little heed to the shadows and what may lie within them.

It was more interested in the old man with a staff that was not his and wore a familiar face that should not be so old.

A swirl of greenish mist vortexed around the cursedarchmage as the raven vanished from the air before it manifested into a cloaked, middle-aged man that had once been his master in his timeline and was still his master in another. He held an exact replica of the greatstaff the old Archmage carried himself, except it was no replica at all. The eyes of both staves glowed in the presence of the other.

“Why are you here?” at last the corrupt Medivh inquired in a soft voice once he had taken his true form, his face hidden in shadow by his cowl. There was no malice or threat in his tone, only curiosity and perhaps wary concern. “You do not belong here.”

Something felt different, suspicious. That’s all what the Archmage could think of as he was making his way through the valley, having agreed to meet Yrel away from his base. Cordana of course had her doubts, but Khadgar reassured her that everything would be fine, that he could take care of himself. After all, Garona was captured, and he doubted that Gul’dan could find a better assassin than her. If she was out, the threat level significantly dropped.

He was being careful, trying to observe the very movement of the strange, big wolves or the deer that were roaming the fields. No hidden orcs seemed to be in sight, but still, he sensed something. He hated that feeling, knowing that something could happen and just living to the anticipation of it. At last, his suspicions were proved to be correct. What he witnessed had him stare with his eyes widened, narrowing them straight away after the initial shock, one hand raised slightly in a defensive manner, ready to spit out a spell.

The cloaked man’s face was hidden, but his attire, his staff, his transformation from a raven to a man left little to his imagination.

“No.. it can’t be you...”, he muttered, taken back by his former master’s appearance, oblivious to the fact that in a way, the two of them never met before. “I am a traveler in this world, not a local. I am sure that you can say the same for yourself, correct? This is not a world occupied by humans, and especially mages. You can lower your hood now”, he prompted him, swallowing down hard, wanting to make sure that his eyes didn’t deceive him.

Brows furrowing, Jaina frowned. She had not heard about what happened with Garrosh, in fact she had very little about the former Warchief. But just hearing his name made her angry, put her in a bad mood. Setting aside her tea, her hands folded in her lap. Icily, she asked,

"No. I have not heard anything about Garrosh. What has happened?" All else was ignored, she could care less about what happened to Garona or the Archmage’s plans for her. All that mattered was knowing what had happened, what she should have been told earlier.

Her annoyance didn’t go unnoticed, when Khadgar asked others to fill him in about what happened during his absence, he was surprised to hear about Theramore’s destruction and Garrosh’s part in this, but he was also informed about Jaina’s reaction. Of course she would be more hostile towards the Horde, and towards him for being more..open minded, that’s what he called it.

So she had no idea of what happened. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to be the one to explain what happened, but it was better to deal with it and get done with it. “Garrosh Hellscream is dead. Thrall challenged him and Garrosh is now no more. The Iron Horde of course won’t be stopped after this, Gul’ldan is more powerful than ever right now. Which is why I’m trying hard to find a way to stop this, without casualties.”

“Like I said, I am the leader. I need to start acting more… Leaderly.” Sitting in the chair opposite of Khadgar, she crossed her legs. “I’m glad to hear that Cordana puts up with you. If she didn’t, I can’t imagine where you would be.” 

Her lips twitched into another smile, and she raised an eyebrow. “So tell me, besides getting stabbed and working with the Horde — which I still don’t agree with — how does the expedition? Have you broken into Garona’s mind yet?” As Jaina said this, she accepted the tea gracefully, holding the cup in her lap.

Khadgar chuckled to himself; it was true, despite his constant protests and small ‘fights’ with Cordana, he was thankful for everything that she did to keep him safe. After all, his rather reckless behavior at some times managed to become well known among his fellow mages.

“I will let you know now, Jaina, that the Horde has been more cooperative than ever. I’m not sure if you heard what happened to Garrosh...? And who was behind it?”, he asked, knowing that he was treading on water when it came to the former Horde Warchief. “No, not yet. I will find a way though, if she is anything like the Garona I used to know..”, he trailed off.

The news about an Orcish Horde invading Azeroth spread fast within the tavern, but Jetista had been less than sober to pay any attention until someone, somewhere had mentioned something about venturing into the Dark Portal for relics and treasures.

So when soldiers heeded the call of the Archmage to fight against Garrosh’s new army, the elven rogue had geared herself up for yet another epic adventure. This would be the only time the young sin’dorei could be seen donning a Horde tabard under the pretense of wanting to be revered as one of Thrall’s mightiest warriors.

The sound of weapons clashing against each other, the soldiers of the Horde and the Alliance fighting against the brown skinned orcs that were coming out of the portal in hordes filled the air, the red sun of Dreanor, just like he always remembered it illuminating them, those were the vivid memories he had of that specific day.

He observed the situation, trying to find a way to shut down the Portal for yet another time, this time around in a different timeline. His eyes narrowed when he learnt that Gul’dan was the key for this. Facing the Orcish warlock which he had a history with wouldn’t be pretty and he was definitely not looking forward to it.

The healers were doing their job, healing their allies and making sure that the Iron Horde was contained while they worked out a way to slow them down and prevent them from invading Azeroth. He couldn't believe the mess that Garrosh Hellscream put them in, but he was going to get to the bottom of this. 

Something caught his eye closeby; a distraction. No, a blood elf, dying right before his eyes, too late for the healers to get to her. Raising his brown gloved hand, he uttered a phrase and with much ease altered time, just a few moments before, returning the elf to her feet and in good health while he set the orc which attacked her on fire, watching it flail before falling down the stairs. 

“Are you alright?”, he asked, raising his voice to be heard while setting a protective barrier between them and the new attackers.

✡— “Yeah I feel like there’s some hoodoo over here,  trying to get into contact with my mate from the other  side, Papa Midnite, communication spells bloody broken too…”

“John Constantine. Jack of all trades master of none. Fire is it?”

“I see, there is no way for me to reach any of my allies or fellow mages in Dalaran either. I have no idea how they managed to shut down everything, but I will find out. So this...Midnight man, is he your point of contact?”

“Its a pleasure to meet you, John Constantine. Among others, yes. I take it that you have a deep preference for elemental fire, yes?”
