In returning from an Instagram hiatus, I want to first post about this unprecedented moment that will (hopefully) permanently change how we in the US understand the roles of protest, racism, government, and the police. . After my first year of law school, I’ve learned the slow moving, ineffective, and often disappointing attempts at racial justice reform through the legal system. Courts have actively upheld white supremacy through among other things, status quo bias, which has both perpetuated and justified a stark resistance to change. For each step towards racial equality, there have been massive and intentional moves to stifle progress. . Black Americans for hundreds of years have been met with a woeful lack of empathy on behalf of white Americans. From domestic terrorism to mass incarceration and most visibly at the moment, police brutality, Black people have been treated firmly as second class citizens, and that did not end with the abolition of slavery. And white Americans (myself included) have systemically failed to do enough to combat that reality. . It’s not enough just to care or cry, to read or to intellectually & abstractly discuss racism with other white family and friends. We need to fundamentally change how as a nation we deal with and react to injustice. . Exhausted from the culmination of 1L, a resurgence of binge eating behaviors (exacerbated by stay-at-home orders), and starting a summer job in the racial justice sphere with LOTS to do, I’ve been too exhausted to participate in social media. But there’s no time for my exhaustion, so I apologize for the delayed public response. . It should go without saying, but to be perfectly clear: black lives matter. They always have, they always will. We need to finally act like it. . This fight has persisted for centuries, but many are joining it now for the first time. Black voices have been systemically ignored, but finally, we have a unique opportunity in which everyone is listening — let’s not waste it.
