the fight was a lot harder than suspected, and hunk knew he was going to be sore in the morning when they got off this planet. he was slowly adding more scars to his collection on his body, but it wasn’t that bad especially when he locked eyes with keith and realize that he was bleeding. the words tumble out of his mouth when he pointed the obvious, but yellow paladin was hoping that the blood wasn’t keith’s and that keith was alright, till he watched him stumble slightly when he walked forward.

hunk’s legs felt like lead but he willed them to move forward as he caught up with keith before putting his arm around his shoulder before looking at the shorter boy.

“hey, let me help.”

【白】It broke his heart to hear distraught in the voice of someone who was himself a beacon of support, a spirit unwavering in its positivism. It felt wrong, yet it wasn’t.  He wished it could be.

His gaze was sorrowful, intense with empathy as he laid a palm onto the man’s shoulder. Lips quivered as his mind raced with words of solace, but in this moment, only a gesture could express what he wished to say - and so, his arms wrapped the other in an embrace. His chest brimmed with something almost akin to fatherly love, and the responsibility of not just such, but also with that of a leader. 

“ Nothing in this world is truly alright, “ he began, pulling away once the other had had enough. “ But we will move forward. And that is as good as it can be. “

“ You are irreplaceable Hunk, and strong. You’re the kind of person people can rely on. “ A hint of a smile tugged at his lips as he added, “ A leg. But even as such, you aren’t invincible, no one is. There’s no need to pretend you were. “

“ This burden should never have befallen any of you, “  he said, more to himself. A heartbeat of silence passed, and he met the other’s gaze again, this time steadfast, confident. “ Things will turn for the better. You are not alone, Hunk. You’re loved dearly, and we’ll do anything we can to help you, I will. The world is cruel and scary, yes - but not you nor I are facing it alone. Trust in that. “

it was tough enough to come clean on what was weighing his mind. when he had spoken his confession, his plea of needing to know everything is going to be alright, he did not meet shiro’s eyes in fear that he was letting him down. it always felt like an unspoken vow hunk made ever since they found themselves in space that he would be the one to focus on everyone and try and cheer them up, but he didn’t have that.

shae was a comfort and a reminder that people needed him and she showed kindness towards him and warmth from someone that wasn’t team voltron, and yet hunk lost his facade when shae’s life was in danger because of him.

he tried and tried again on focusing on the current problem at hand. figured if he can focus on a problem at hand like coming up with new recipes to help cheer lance up when he’s down or help pidge with the current experiment she was having. other times he would focus on the mission they were on and try to keep his mind clear from the family back at home.

yesterday was even rougher for him, it was his mom’s birthday and it was the same day that they were nearly killed. it was normal for them to be faced with a dangerous mission but yesterday was different, it was the make it or break it. either they won the battle to free more planets or they would perish.

the young paladin quickly rose his head when he felt the man he looked up to for guidance had pulled him into a hug. taken back by a few seconds to realize it wasn’t him hugging shiro but it was the other way around, shiro was hugging him and it was rare for anyone to give hunk hugs instead of the other way around. after a few moments, hunk hugged shiro back as he listened to shiro’s words of wisdom.

when the embrace broke, hunk met shiro’s gaze with his own before his voice was soft and quiet when he spoke.

“shiro, we barely made it out yesterday. how are we suppose to make it out the next time? when can we go home to see our family? they must think we’re all dead since we haven’t contacted them or gave them any signs that we’re alive.”

everything that went down only a couple hours ago still rattled the yellow paladin, they nearly died and the resistance was nearly wiped out in one fell swoop. so saying that the paladin of the yellow lion was emotional was an understatement when he saw one of their own.

“keith!”

his voice was booming from excitement of seeing the other paladin and relieved that keith wasn’t one of the lives that was lost during the battle. once he reached towards the smaller man, he quickly pulled him into a quick bear hug before pulling away with a huge smile spread across his lips.

“you have no idea how happy i am to see you.”

the words strike a cord in hunk, especially hearing it from their ‘fearless’ leader. hunk was suppose to be the carefree guy, the guy to be more grounded with his connection with his lion and the guy who suppose to make everyone feel better by his cooking and humor. it was easier doing that instead of having others discovered that hunk is nothing more than humpty dumpty who was trying to piece himself together without anyone’s assistance.

sometimes he can’t help but wonder if the other paladins didn’t want to go home, pidge found her missing brother and she’s now working on finding her father who was taken by the galra. hunk believes that keith doesn’t know where his parents are at or who they were, and everyone else he wasn’t sure if they are too preoccupied of what’s in front of them than what’s beyond what they see.

hunk missed his brothers and sisters, he missed selling his mother’s cooking when he comes home from school before he started attending the garrison. he even was planning on taking a trip to home for christmas, but instead he was here in space with his friends and countless unfamiliar faces counting on him to save their lives. there was a chance that he would never go home and what if he died in battle? he almost did and that’s what caused him to be in this position with shiro talking to him.
