After handing Tommy a cigarette, you lay your head on his thigh, your hand affectionately caressing his knee, neither of you feel the need of getting dressed, because after so many years confessing your deepest secrets to each other, sex was the less intimate thing you ever done, especially, less intimate than what you're about to ask
"Are you okay?"
"Lizzie is fucking pregnant"
You remain speechless, how can a smart man as him be so stupid sometimes?
"And she's keeping it" he continues with a sigh
"Then I pity you, she's not gonna leave you alone for one fucking second"
The room becomes silent for a minute, and you sigh when Tommy intertwine his fingers on your hair, massaging your head like you are the overstressed one
"I'm going to run for MP"

He scoffs at your teasing, it's an old habit that he hopes you never get rid of

"So Lizzie will finally get what she wants?"

You don't answer, Tommy is everything to you, but you can't see him as a lover, much less as your husband

"What the hell are you doing in here?" is the first thing that comes out of your mouth, the view in front of you is not really surprising, just troubling and deeply disappointing
The first thing Tommy did only a day after coming back from France, was knocking on your door, unfortunately, you weren't there yet, the demand for nurses still were really high, but you came back soon, and he was the first person you saw on the train station
He was also the first person you told about the mess inside of you, while preparing some tea, the question felt forbidden, like you should, somehow, forget about everything that happened, like the screams of the injured soldiers don't echo in the back of your head
"Do you still think about it? About France?"
"All the time"
After going out for some drinks, he was the first man you slept with after coming back, it wasn't the first time you slept together, but it felt like it was, you were both different, and unlike the first time, he was rough and you enjoyed it, both of you desperately trying to hang yourselves to reality
When you finished, Tommy didn't take his eyes out of you, you ran your fingers on his now mature traces and commented
"There was long time I didn't see a man from this close"
Tommy laughed, genuinely laughed, and you knew as long as Tommy were laughing, you're still your old self, when you're together, you can be bored teenagers kicking rocks on the streets and stealing cigarettes from drunken men
"Can I come back tomorrow?" he hesitantly questioned
"Anytime you want"
