from a little looking around i found Pedalboard2 and Element, which look to work basically the same as vsthost! i don't know anything about their compatibility with different types of vst plugins though. one of the main reasons i use vsthost and reaper is because they can run 32 and 64-bit vst plugins side-by-side. for some reason, a lot of audio programs (cough ableton cough) only want to do one or the other.

oh sure! so, vsthost is an old lightweight program that lets you loads up vst plugins and chain them together to make sounds. i use it to take my microphone input and run it through some (free!) effects to achieve my glitchy robot voice. here's what that looks like:

my microphone input is top-left. that gets cleaned up by reaper's compression and gate plugins. then i use kerovee for pitch correction/autotune and formant shifting, dblue glitch to jumble up the sound with its built-in effects, and jb time machine to bitcrush the whole thing. i don't feel like tracking down all those links atm, but all these effects are free and easily found online!

at the end, i replaced voicemeeter with a much simpler program called vb cable. that works as a virtual audio input+output so i can have vsthost send the processed audio to other programs like discord or obs for streaming.

the main thing is gathering effects that you like and sitting down to mess with settings until you get a voice that balances robot sounds and clarity. my vst folder is like 60GB or something that i've been collecting for years, and i designed this whole setup myself over a couple hours.

this is remarkably serendipitous, as i literally went back and cleaned this up for streaming a few days ago! aside from replacing voicemeeter with vb cable, i also replaced a paid cracked dynamics plugin with reacomp and reagate. if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

if you're looking for a more active community, i do know of a couple fairly-large discord servers full of robots, ai, and similarly-synthetic beings. they're a bit too big for me to really hang out there, but that's a data point in favor of there being a sizeable community to connect with!
