almost an entire day after prom, allie has only just gotten home. her friends brought her clothes and food and comfort and she loved them for it. but she needed to sleep.in the morning, she could be there for cass again. she might wake up tomorrow. god, allie hoped so. what were they supposed to do without her? it would be chaos. nobody liked their garbage shifts, but they all knew they needed them. but now somebody was running people over? things were about to fall apart unless cass woke up… or somebody else decided to say something.
once a week cassandra stayed for allie’s swim meet so that their parents didn’t have to make the trip twice. usually she sat in the stands of the indoor pool but today the smell of chlorine was much stronger than usual. she signaled allie and signed that she was going to sit on the bleachers outside. so while most people sat on the bleachers to watch sports, cassandra was there to read. not that she really got the chance that day.
she hadn’t realized there were after school practices today but she wasn’t one to pay attention to sports. her eyes gazed over the top of her book as the lacrosse team made their way onto the field noisily. of course, of course it was lacrosse. she wished she could sink through the bleachers and disappear as she moved the book back in front of her face. maybe no one had seen her, maybe no one would notice.
“heeeeyy cassandraaaaa!” came a very loud, obnoxious voice from the field. she peered over the top of her book again. monty de luca waved fervently at her from the field. she lowered the book and waved lightly. she was nothing if not polite. after all, she was student body president.
her eyes shifted and she saw peyton standing next to him, facing away from her, rubbing his neck. if cassandra wasn’t the only person oblivious to peyton’s feelings for her she might’ve realized that he was facing away from her so he could tell monty to stop without her being able to see. but she was completely and hopelessly oblivious to it due to her own crush on him.
just when she thought they might leave, monty took his lacrosse stick and began to smack peyton’s butt with it. she pressed her lips together to contain her amusement. after a few good smacks, peyton turned around and tackled him to the ground and she had to pull the book back in front of her face to hide her laughter.
the whistle blew to start practice so they moved to join the group and cassandra was able to lower her book into her lap. she sat and pretended not to watch but it was hard. eventually her phone vibrated with a text from allie that she was ready to go and for once, cassandra had to pull herself away from sports.
keiran had gone a bit overboard with the drinking, even he could admit that, but he made a few attempts to sober up before it was all over. he knew he had a meeting with a certain blonde broad after the fact, and he didn’t necessarily want to show up blubbering drunk. so, downing a second bottle of water and nibbling on a cracker, keiran pulled out his phone, making sure the rattling pill bottle was still in his coat pocket.
new message to: cassandra: hey, found some, meet me by the street after everyone’s gone.
with that, keiran finished off the bottle and made his way through the dwindling crowd, waiting for the last few stragglers to make their way home so he could get this over with. he promised blue he’d be home within the hour, so his deadline was coming up short.
