Glass impacts its user negatively. Josh Lowensohn simply describes the product in his article about Google Glass, restating that anyone can buy it but failing to pause and wonder: what dreams may come? He fails to pause and consider the negative aspects of the tech tool in relation to ...
Google Glass Take Over
Google Glass does have the potential to invade privacy, and once again give all the power to the corporations. As Katy Kelly, fellow blogger points out, Google glass is advanced technology that has the ability of facial recognition, GPS and other sources that could invade privacy. There are people that could be uncomfortable with the idea that Google has this much power. Like Kelly said, "Losing privacy goes hand in hand with losing freedom, an alarming idea for citizens." (Kelly) But we should not waste a great tool like Google Glass, because of a few possible problems.
Safety First
I agree that facial recognition is an invasion of privacy, it also keeps the streets safer. Even though I think it should be allowed if you want it, there are upsides to having this ability. New York police used it to try and make the streets safer for their citizens. Reporter Richard Reilly interviewed NYPD to see how it could help, "Google Glass could have a similar value proposition for police forces, Merritt said, pointing out that wireless facial recognition software is one potential use." (Reilly) We have seen in the past that some monitoring is needed, to help prevent tragic events. As long as Google is allowed to do so, them and other corporations are going to do it. That is why it is up to the people to change that.
Power to the People
Rebecca MacKinnon, author of Consent of the Networked, talks about how it is up to the people to take control back. As long as we allow the government and corporations to invade our privacy they are going to. Google glass has the ability to do great things for this world and we need that kind of technology. They are going to invade our privacy as long as we let them, so as a community we need to stand up and protect our freedom. Google Glass is still an excellent thing even without facial recognition and GPS tracking. "Just because revolutionary cyber-soviets and Robin Hood-style cyber vigilantism are not the answers to our problems does not mean that business and government as we know them today are serving the needs of today’s citizens and netizens" Rebecca MacKinnon says in her book. We need to count on the people to use Google Glass right. This new technology is too important to waste.
Advertise Everywhere
No matter where you go there will always be advertisements. If we don't use Google glass that just means we use our smartphones. All technology we use has advertisements. Its is once again up to the people to put an end to that if they want. Even without technology their is advertisements when you just go out for a drive on billboards. As far as Google Glass having even more extreme advertisement, it is a helpful way to try new things. If you are in a area you don't know and want to try a restaurant you are going to need an ad to help. Google Glass may invade privacy at times, but so doesn't all technology. Glass does more for the people than any other device and we need to use it. People need to fight against the other problems, and not just for Google Glass but for all devices.
