Social Media Shapes The World
Social Media Improves Society
There have been many complaints about what social media sites do to our younger generations. Many people argue that social media is simply for people to complain about life to others, post silly memes and tell the world what they are doing when nobody cares. Though many of that is true, there is much more to social media that people need to realize. Deleting facebook, twitter, vine and Instagram should not be option A. Instead we should use the sites to make a positive impact on the world.
Share Something Useful
Society needs to stop posting ridiculous Memes about LOLcats and other non significant things to social media. Is it ok from time to time post fun things to friends. Sure. But what is not okay is to waste your life away doing things like that. "The easier it is for the average person to publish, the more average what gets published becomes. But increasing freedom to participate in the public conversation has compensating values" (Shirky, 47). Stay on Twitter and Facebook, but tweet with some educational value.
Internet: Society's Textbook
More and more the internet and social media is the way we learn things. Children are spending less time listening to teachers and more time on smartphones and new devices. As Jenny points out in her blog, "Children spend more time immersed in media than with parents or at school. They are vulnerable students. And smart devices act as their teachers"(Paiva). This shouldn't be a problem. With the technology we have today there is no reason for children not to rely on their gadgets to learn things. Problem is nobody is sharing anything of any value.
Share and Learn Something New
We finally have the freedom to publish anything we want at anytime. We our wasting that freedom with LOLcats and selfies. "... what matters now is not the new capabilities we have, but how we turn those capabilities, both technical and social, into opportunities" (Shirky, 191-192). Start sharing views and ideas on politics, the economy, how to better the environment, anything educational. If we can start getting people to communicate about this with value to the society, the internet and social media could make this world a much better place.
Importance of What Becomes Published
Author Robert McChesney discussed these issues in his book "Digital Disconnect" and the problems he saw. “What people are exposed to significantly shapes what they will demand.” (76) We need to start exposing people, especially the younger generation who have become addicted to candy crush, video games, and TV to more educational things online. Expose them to intelligent and significant things and finally they will start to care about education and important society values. "This is why content is crucial in social media. This is why engagement is crucial. Because it’s you. Who you are is as important as what you do. It’s your way into their world" (Hutchinson).
Make Something of this World
Instead of tweeting out how much you hate twitter, tweet about an educational book. Maybe tweet out "Cognitive Surplus" by Clay Shirky so others can learn how to make an impact on this world. Whatever you do, don't waste your life on LOLcats and selfies, and become someone important in this world.

Make A Change!
Stay Relevant

Don't Tweet Your Life Away

But what is not okay is to waste your life away doing things like that. We have the freedom to publish, and socialize with people about important things in life and we need to take advantage of that. "This is why content is crucial in social media. This is why engagement is crucial. Because it’s you. Who you are is as important as what you do. It’s your way into their world" (Hutchinson). Publish something with some significance, become something in this world, because social media, and the world wide web is becoming a significant part of this world.
Socialize on the Web
Instead of coming home from a long day at the office or the classroom and immediately jumping on the couch and putting on the television, try something different. Socialize through the web, find some groups and topics online that you can communicate with and add to that group. People argue social media and addiction to the internet has ruined communication with others. That is simply not true. We have more way than ever to communicate with one another and we need to start communicating about significant topics. Instead of spending an hour on candy crush, go online and share and learn knowledge. Use social media to make a difference in this world and make it a better place.

I Will Never Stop Tweeting
I Will Never Delete My Facebook!
Social Media has become apart of our lives. As much as people constantly complain about how much time people spend on facebook, or the stupid things people post we will never get off of it. Even the people that claim they hate facebook and twitter need them. It has become part of our life. "Our social media tools aren't an alternative to real life, they are part of it. In particular, they are increasingly the coordinating tools for events in the physical world." (Shirky, 37)
Can't Stop Tweeting
I am constantly on at least one social media site at any given time. I can't get enough of it. I honestly don't think I could go more than a few hours without checking facebook, twitter, or instagram without having a major freak out. It has become a necessary part of life. It is how we find out what is going on this world. Older generations constantly hate on the younger generations for always being on their new gadgets and devices. Always suggesting that we put the damn things down and look at a paper, or watch the news. WHY?! Why on earth would I go look at a newspaper or go watch the tv for the news. I can do that all from my smartphone! Go watch the television and watch the news. I'll just do that from my phone, or go check twitter and get all the updates.
Social Media and Technology Saves Us
Through all the complaining and hatred of social media posts, social media is what keeps us up to date. We all complain and talk about it, which just further proves how big social media has become. We all need our phones, other gadgets and technology and most importantly social media to stay relevant.
