 It’s interesting to hear about the struggles of half-Japanese people. I don’t know my father much so I can’t learn about his experiences which would’ve been pretty interesting. Instead, my boyfriend is half-Japanese and half-German and even today, he experienced being ‘othered’ by a native Japanese person. My boyfriend is taking beginner Japanese language lessons at our university to learn how to speak better Japanese and get in touch with his culture, and he has a Japanese first name. His professor, upon learning that he is mixed, regularly treats him negatively and today his professor told him as of today that he is not allowed to write his name in Kanji or Hiragana anymore, and only to write it in Katakana since, word-for-word, “he is not Japanese.” It hurt him a lot for her to say that, and sadly I had recommended her to him for take for his language class. He identifies as both German and Japanese and holds his heritages close to his heart, and I can’t believe that she would say such a thing like that to him. When I took her class and I told her about my father, she seemed so interested and took a liking to me; I’m surprised that she would treat my boyfriend this way.
