Improvisation is a big thing in drama, and it takes very long to get used to. So to make us feel more comfortable, our drama teacher told us this: the secret to improv is to keep the conversation going, and don't put the other person in a position where the cannot come up with a reply.

I think the same concept could be applied to roleplay threads. If someone posts a starter saying "I like your shoes, they look nice", don't simply reply with "Thanks" as that puts the roleplayer in an awkward position: what are they supposed to say?????

Instead, make the reply interesting, and provide an easy way for the person to answer. For example, you could reply with the starter about shoes by saying, "Thank you! To be honest, It's a hand me down. My brother gets all the good stuff." This provides more of a leeway into a conversation than a simple thanks, and your characters might end up finding more about each other.

And that, my friends is how to turn a boring, simple starter into a long lasting, interesting conversation
