BEN YOUNG Reading articles and looking through images on Young's interest me. I love the simple clean lines of his work. Of the combination of glass and cement. It's so simple and so complex at the same time. I could stare at them for so long. They are so aesthically pleasing. They are all handcrafted. He starts with a drawing of what he wants then sculpts a glass block by hand. The combinations of materials is lovely. They work with each other so well. They compliment each other. His works influence me with the simplicity of it. And the combination of materials. The colors are also so simple. Images 1. Grotto Laminated clear float glass with cast concrete and cast bronze. BETHANY WALKER Before starting on my finals for this semester I did not know about Walker. I found out last thursday, the day of my fibers final. I was shocked someone has done what I'm doing in such a similar fashion. I mean I just discovered this and she had been doing it for awhile. Aesthetically, I enjoy her work. It pleases me to look at images of her work. I have a want to have my work to be clean with straight edges just as hers, but I really don't want that. Looking at her work makes me tweak what I want to do with the same kind of material she works in. She does cement and textiles. I want to do cement and everything else. I'm more fascinated in cement rather than cement with fabrics. I mean I love to dye my nylons with acid dyes but that doesn't mean I have to have it in cement. I'm happy I discovered Walker. I feel it's pushing me more in my own direction instead of a "who I want to me" direction. Does that make sense? Eh. Sometimes I feel like I want to be someone else or be like someone else in my art practice and in who I am, but I come to this realization (sooner than later when I have these feelings and it's usually a lot) I can't be that way or like that person. It is basically not who I am. So that's how I feel about Bethany's work. I want to me more like her aesthetically, but I can't because it's not me. The picture is from pinterest. And here's an interview with her: http://www.textileartist.org/bethany-walker-interview-cement-textiles/ #notreallyanartistofinfluence #artist #studioupdate
This is my final for this class. I wouldn’t say it is an installation. More of just an object. There was sound involved and will post a video with the sound later this week hopefully. In this, there are dyed nylon fabrics casted in cement. The sound is coming out of this object. The lighting was very dim and it was the only piece in the gallery. To me it feels like a starting piece for my new focus. My focus bring more on cement and fabric. It didn’t feel like a finish piece to me. It was too new for my practice to be.

This is a final for my Fabrication class. I combine my two previous finals and added more. I will post better and more pictures and a video of this soon. The sound is a big part of my work or this work. Compared to my first two finals this feels more towards the finish line. Having all three of them allows me to see where my work wants to go. I’m gravitating more towards small multiple with a mixture of medium sized pieces. This work I reflects how I feel at the moment. Being close to finished my BFA and everything that is going on in my life. Making these works allows me to know I do want to continue on with my practice and see where it will take me.

My final for my intermedia class. It was a start to something new. After my senior show I wanted to go back and experiment with cement. It has been something I have always wanted to work with but didn't realize it was so easy to do. This is very small cement rectangle with fuzz sweater coming out of the rectangle and is under it. There is a video projected on the object. The video after seeing it installed does not do much for the object. It was a video of fabric moving. What was nice about the projection is the light casted on the object and the shadows. #weeklyupdate #studioupdate #final
Part 1 of final assignment for dyeing. Original fabric blue nylon changing to red, pink, purple, and blue fabric. Acid dye: 1/2 batch of pale dye with 1/8 bright red and hot fushia Placing the braided and crocheted fabric into pot and allowing it to slowly submerge into the pot for 15 mins. #studioupdate #aciddye
#studioupdate #hw #finalproject For my final project I want to make something that incorporates both cement and fabric. I like the idea of two completely different things together. I have always wanted to make something with cement but never have gotten a chance to. Fabric is seen as soft and flowy, while cement is hard and heavy. You normally would no think of them together. Sarah Blood does this with light and cement. Light and cement are not thought of together. I am inspired by what she does with neon lights and cement. I am either going to make one big piece or a few small pieces. I am not sure if I want to have this as a site specific work or just a walk around sculpture. I like the idea of small little pieces placed together. If is is a big piece it would be 4ft by 4ft. If it's small it would be 2ft by 1ft each. I want to dye using acid and possibly experimenting with natural dyes with banana plant. My color palette is mostly neutral with pops of color from tiny elements that will be added. I would like to incorporate a video into the work. The video would mainly be a source of light in the work. Displaying the work would ideally be in a gallery or in the hallway or outside on the bridge next to the patio, but natural lighting would be an issue.

#artistofinfluence #studioupdate #hw My artist of influence is Sarah Blood. Mainly work involving concrete and lighting. Light is a key aspects of my work. And concrete is something I have always wanted to explore, but have not had a chance to. I like the different ways she incorporates light. Light in her work is basically a line that interrupts the sculpture. I love that light does this. The images I have posted are from her website http://sarahblood.com Article: "Sarah Blood Lightness Within" http://metalmagazine.eu/en/post/interview/sarah-blood-lightness-within In the article, Blood, states her interest is "form, balance, composition, abstraction and a post-minimalist aesthetics, and the tension that can be created between forms, objects and different materials". She uses the materials because it is what she knows about (glass) and what she is drawn to (neon). When she is making her work she is aware of where her work is going to be so it is a site-aware work. There is meaning in the materials she uses and she makes work based on what she is currently interested in as well.
Collaborative Gift: Erika, Lisette, Fara, Guillermo, and me. We decided to make a pillow with pocketsfor a homeless person in LA. As documentation we made a pillow in a scrapbook style. The pillow was dyed with low immersion dye in fiber-reactive. The pockets were natural dyes were used. The scrapbook pillow was made with the same materials as the pillow: the same muslin, a piece of the dyed fabric from the pillow, a sample of the one of the pockets, and pictures. Overall it was a good group project. Everyone did what was needed to complete the project.
