So, as you’ve probably already heard, Free! is getting two compilation movies and one all-new movie (with new content!!!). If you haven’t heard, here’s the article.

And I’m definitely excited! Perhaps not so much for the compilation films, since it’s stuff we’ve seen before (though apparently they’ll also add new scenes, so that could be interesting), but definitely for the movie since it will finally talk about what happens to our favorite Swim Clubs at the end of high school and most likely after they graduate. Point is - it’ll be the story from after season 2.

I’ve been a fan of Free! since the summer of 2013 when it originally aired, although I really got into the series between summer of 2013 and summer of 2014 and so I really loved the series by the time the second season aired (and I even like season 2 more than season 1). I also really liked the Free! Starting Days movie, which showed us the boys in middle school (and gave us new characters whom I also really enjoyed), even if the plot was simple, similar to what we’ve seen before and not particularly ground-breaking. It was also cool to see the boys as kids - with all the cuteness and annoyingness of preteens haha. Still, though their struggles were simpler, they were still enjoyable to watch.

I really like the characters in the series so I’m looking forward to any and all official anime content that they’re willing to give us. I sort of wish they made a full adaption of the High Speed novels because I am interested in the lives of the characters in middle school, especially that they feature Asahi, Ikuya and Nao (I really like em, okay). Then again, they announced that Asahi and Ikuya will be appearing in the new production so that definitely makes me happy. :D

The only thing that makes me sort of sad when it comes to Free! is that more Free! means… more ship wars. The implied ‘romantic’ triangle that the creators have set up bothers me because it’s the source of all the hate and toxicity in the Free fandom. It’s actually part of the reason why I don’t get involved in the Free fandom much nowadays - it’s just extremely suffocating and simply tiring to see people argue which ship is “better” or “more canon”, and everything related to that. It’s difficult to simply enjoy character interactions and scenes when most of the discourse comes down to “MakoHaru this”, “RinHaru that” etc. Of course, I like all three characters in said triangle, I sometimes just wish that they had less romantic tension.

Still, I’m excited for the new movies! I’ll definitely enjoy the movie sequel, whatever it may bring. To me, Free! has always been a good time and I’m expecting that to be the case this time as well. :3
