A wolfstar centric fic set in 1888, London.
Sirius Black and Remus Lupin meet investigating the same string of brutal murders across London. Soon enough, the reluctant partnership begins to feel like something more as they close in on the murder, but Remus fears his real motivation for investigating will be exposed. Has the monster Sirius's been looking for been right under his nose the entire time?
I recently wrote this prologue for a fic idea I've had for a couple months and I'm really proud of this first little bit. I'm incredibly excited to write the rest! Some constructive criticism would be appreciated if you have time.
Prologue: The Moon and Her Monster
The Moon has seen all of mankind's horrors. She has been hanging in the sky, silently watching, since the universe came into being. She has seen the aftermath of battles and the bodies scattered over once green fields now flowing with rivers of blood. She has seen herself reflected in the dead eyes of cold bodies in the streets of great cities while its kings and queens feast. She has seen men transform into beasts when her light shines upon them.
She has seen these beasts howl up at her, basking in her glow. She has seen them rip out the throats of their fellow man. Moonlight runs through their veins. The night air fills their lungs. These monsters, these vicious creatures. The closest thing she has to kin, these children of the Moon.
The Moon watches, silent as always, as one such beast prowls the streets of London. Occasionally her view is obstructed by the smog that chokes the city, but she can still feel its presence. She can feel its ears twitch as it listens for heartbeats. It hears the staggering steps of a drunk man making his way home through the shadows.
Did he not know? This is the one night a month that men are not the most dangerous creatures lurking in the dark.
The beast howls, and the Moon wishes she could shut her eyes to what happens next. A guttural scream cuts through the smog as teeth sinks into flesh. The creature’s claws rip through skin and muscle, its jaws make quick work of bone. The man’s ribcage is torn open, exposing his heart and lungs as blood pools around his writhing body. The dark red seeps into the groves of uneven cobblestones. The sleeping city doesn’t stir as the man’s last scream tumbles from his dying lips.
The job is done. Both man and beast are as still as the silent night air, then the creature hangs its head, seemingly in shame. It brushes its narrow snout gently across the man’s face and lets out a pained, regretful sound. It whines like a wounded dog, eyes shut, as its attempts to rouse the man grow more urgent. Finally, it curls up next to him, long wiry legs curving inward, and tears like liquid moonlight gently carve a path through the blood on its face.
What a remarkable creature, the Moon thinks distantly, to know what it has done. To know how badly it has sinned, and feel regret.
As though it could sense her thoughts, the creature lifts its head to meet the Moon’s gaze. Its yellow eyes stare into her own. The Moon and her monster regard each other through the vast expanse of night sky.
And the Moon feels a rush of love.
What is the pain of men to the sadness in those eyes? It did not ask to exist, just as she did not ask to bear witness to it. Yet here they both are, sharing in this violence.
She believed her kin to be a burden, a stain on her existence, but a mother should love her children unconditionally. She understands now that it kills because it has to, though it weighs heavy on its heart. Violence is in its nature. To ask it to stop would be like asking water not to flow, birds not to fly. She wishes she could reach out and stroke its blood soaked fur. She wishes she could take its sins as her own, absorb its guilt to lighten the burden of its soul.
For the first time in her existence, the Moon smiles.
That's it for now! Hope you enjoyed
